Crazy that Aoyama was crying out for help to Deku in s4, and was overcome with enough guilt to pretty much sacrifice his future as a hero so everyone else could pass the licensing exam in s3

Fun fact: The reason why Aoyama brought up Uraraka's crush on Deku in season 3 could be because he tried to self-sabotage himself so that he didn't have to go to the training camp and put his classmates in danger. Something that likely would have gotten him killed if he had succeeded. Basically, he tried to kill himself in an attempt not to endanger his friends, but he failed.

This reveal gives so much context to Aoyama's actions in previous seasons.
A little detail to notice is his visor transparency. He's being dishonest wherever his eyes are obstructed and the visor is a solid color. It's a fun detail to look for in previous seasons.(It's very evident in the licensing exam)
This effect has been used by other characters in MHA as well. Mirio's visor, for example, did the same thing when he first met Overhaul in the alleyway. Since he was lying to Overhaul, his eyes were hidden.

I really hate the rumors about Horikoshi forgetting the traitor based on a quote in an interview that some random online made up when it was pretty clear to me that the traitor was someone who was connected directly to All for One and not necessarily the league, so they wouldn’t be able to do anything until All for One was out of jail. He was arrested pretty much right after the idea of a traitor got brought up so of course it took a back seat

I’m just gonna say it, Aoyama doesn’t deserve to be imprisoned for this. He’s a kid who was forced into a situation where he had the choice of doing what he was told or dying with his parents. I know there’s consequences and stuff, but like, I’m with Midoriya and the class here. Good on them for sticking up for their friend!

I was reading the School Briefs light novels recently, and there's a section of one where Aoyama is having motion sickness on the bus trip to the summer camp. Everyone ends up pitching in to try and take his mind off of it, telling stories and stuff like that. I don't know how much the light novel author knew, but I could totally see that "motion sickness" really being him sick with guilt over what he knew was going to happen.

They've been dropping Aoyama hints for an eternity. In order...
Season 1: nobody knowing where he was at USJ, with him calling it "a secret." Speaks for itself, he was staying out of the fray because he knew they were going to be there and wouldn't hesitate to go after him.
Season 2: not studying for the finals with everyone else and trying to throw Ochako off her game during the fight against Thirteen. The reasoning is simple: if he failed, he wouldn't be able to tell AfO where the camp was.
Season 3: him not taking the unconscious students back to the dorms during the camp attack. Dabi didn't go after him when they made eye contact and might've known he was the spy.
Season 3 part 2: intentionally trying to fail the license exam. He shoots a laser in the sky to try and get defeated, only for 1A to rally behind him. When they do so, he isn't happy about it because he worries he'll drag them down.
Season 4: the cheese incident with Izuku. Given the backlash that OfA caused, Aoyama assumed that he was another AfO spy and tried to to connect with him.
Season 6: we never see Aoyama's reaction to the letter, though given his friendship with Izuku one would think that his reaction would be notable. The letter revealed to Aoyama that he misread Izuku's situation.
Season 6 part 2: as previously mentioned, Aoyama was the only student that didn't reach out to Midoriya during the chase. He was sad that Izuku returned because he knew that AfO would give him instructions again.

There was volume 34 extras of the manga which Hori said he was originally planning to reveal the traitor closer to the camp arc (around volume 9-10). But he had to change plans due to some reception at the time which he had to cut content (this part said at another statement for the MHA Ultra stage play). Hori never forgot the traitor like the fandom said he did. Aoyama is literally the character on the spine of that volume of manga for the camp arc to show he was the traitor and there's been pieces to connect before and after then.
I like Aoyama as the traitor as a parallel to Deku, and that shows why Deku would also be the most empathetic to Aoyama personally (apart from just his general heroic trait). It's also nice that Deku reflected on Lady Nagant to carry that message forward as another person used by AFO.

  • @silveratlas2706

They really nailed the scenes this episode.
This reveal paints a whole new light on so many scenes going even as far back as the first season.
I especially love how much sense it ends up making the fact that the traitor wasn't relevant for so long.
All for One being defeated in Kamino made the Yuga family feel like they were finally free and could go on with their lives whithout putting anyone in danger anymore.
And, of course, once All For One comes back is when Aoyama finds out the truth about Deku and ends up feeling even worse about his actions.
Add this to the ever growing list of plotlines that get significantly enhanced by their set up in the Cultural Festival.
I love that arc so much man!

Bakugo wouldn't be upset. He's emotionally intelligent enough to understand he's part of the problem that caused Aoyama's parents to seek out AFO in the first place. The bullying he put Deku through could have easily led Deku down the same path. And I'm sure he knows Aoyama tried to save them before. Or even if he just found it out. So yeah, he wouldnt be upset.

Another recontextualized Aoyama moment for you! This blew my mind when I realized it
Remember during his final exam with Uraraka how Aoyama randomly asked her about her feelings for Deku? He surprised her so much that she let go and got caught in Thirteen's black hole. Later, Aizawa chided Aoyama and Uraraka for nearly failing the practical exam. And remember, the kids were under the impression that those who failed wouldn't go to the training camp. Was Aoyama trying to purposely throw the exam so he couldn't reveal the camp's location to AFO? Similarly, is this why Aoyama was so willing to sacrifice his provisional license for his classmates -- so he would be less likely to be out on the field where he could betray them? This poor kid just wanted to fit in and now he's being made to hurt all the people he cares about. His self-sabotaging behavior makes such perfect sense it's kinda heartbreaking

Horikoshi the author of MHA does this thing where volumes of the manga will have a character drawn on the spine. Volume 10 was the book depicting Bakugou being kidnapped and tied up by the league of villains back in Kamino. And who was on the spine? Aoyama. It showed Aoyama with an out-of-character guilty expression on his face that people found strange. The volume 10 cover itself was an art of Bakugou in the clutches of Shigaraki. But no one could really use it as concrete evidence because Horikoshi likes putting "unrelated" art of random characters on the spine, back cover, and inside covers. He also made it so those who did notice the Aoyama on the spine could make an assumption that it was just a reference to his big heroic moment trying to save Bakugou and Tokoyami. It was a very genius play on Horikoshi's part.
Yoichi is indeed the name of the first OFA user. Him and the Demon Slayer guy share the same name.
I loved your analysis on how Aoyama's quirk before it was given to him might've not been navel laser but it just manifested that way.

Last thing is I find this something as a situation to be forgivable. That would obviously be up to each person to decide how well they can forgive them but its not a situation where aoyama and his parents had any choice. Its fully understandable in my own opinion why this happened and that they had absolutely no choice given their unfortunate circumstances. It all came out of loving their son and wanting him to succeed and be accepted in the world. Its very much another parallel of a character when compared to deku himself.

This ep.cover the second half of ch 335 to first page and a half of ch 338
another fantastic episode with amazing va, animation and music, studio bones are seriously knocking out the park so far and i hope they can continue this consistancy throughout this season
i remember we were all blindsided by the reveal of aoyama being the traitor after the end of ch 335 with that shot of hagakure in the forset, personally im okay with aoyama being the traitor since there were alot of hints throughout the manga and i do feel sorry for him since he wanted to be a hero so bad despite being quirkless that he was forced to make the deal with the devil to achieve
plus , there was art piece for the mha exibition that was shown to the public before thevreaveal in the manga, the art depcted aoyama in his hero outfit with as sad expression on his face sitting infront of a giant metal wall which was been torn open by a giant purple squid like monster
(there are other piecies of art from the mha art exibition that i can talk about like drawing of deku comissioned by oda (creator of one piece) or momomo conforting jiro but there are two that do contain spoiler for the manga which i will discuss when we get there)
    anime addition:
the anime add a training montage scene with alot of foreshadow for future events

Alright! The traitor is revealed! I have been waiting to talk about this for quite some time. I like the story and I like the idea of all this. But I don’t think it was utilized the best.
I remember when a certain chapter ended, Hagakure was hiding behind a tree as they narrated about the traitor. And the people who suspected Hagakure did a MASSIVE victory lap. She wasn’t at the vote for the Class President Vote! She hasn’t done anything narrative so she’s free to do whatever! We can’t see her body so she might be deformed with other quirks! And I to counter said please there’s ZERO build up for her. None at all! I don’t like the idea of student suspects at all and AOYAMA has more build up. And then the NEXT chapter came and I proceeded to have a doctor surgically remove my foot so I could fit the entire thing in my mouth. It’s like Horikoshi heard me and slapped me. XD
I spent a good amount of last season talking about what crosses off traitor suspects off my list and what gets me to think they are traitors or not. And at that point in the manga I figured it was Vlad King, Present Mic, or Principal Nezu. Vlad King was absolved when the villain who killed Midnight appeared in color who had an identical build and hair style when he wasn’t in color. And Present Mic attacked Garaki in his home base to stop Shigaraki and in a place he could have been betraying for the sake of Shirakumo who has now become a Nomu that they could hold over him. So those didn’t match up. But Nezu? Surely this episode absolved my concerns for Nezu right?
You’re not going to believe this, but no. In fact this episode made me certain with how AFO explained how he enjoys making plans, there was someone standing over Aoyama AT UA to maintain pressure on him as the middle-man. As the way they explained it…somehow made Nezu MORE suspicious not less.
Everytime Aoyama acted it got confusing how this pulled off at all. Nezu PERSONALLY had a scene in season 5 where he SPECIFICALLY hard clears EVERY student. They investigated the kids and came up with NOTHING. And I say HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE. Aoyama is engaging this episode and he broke instantly at every single juncture out of the sheer terror of AFO literally killing others RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM for those that disobeyed. He was in constant panic and turmoil and Nezu HARD CLEARED HIM.
Then there’s the blind spot in the forest. After beefing up security across the seasons, INCLUDING the New UA barrier and being in OFA’s inner circle for years when AFO has targeted UA for such a long time by his own admission, I find it weird that this blind spot was found at all and during THIS time of the jailbreakers and the need for everything to be even more secure with Deku now back! Not that AFO wouldn’t have ways of drawing people out or finding these people alone to target them, but this is essentially the same place Deku fought Gentle Criminal where a blind spot was found LAST time.
And one of the BIGGEST ones that threw me off. All-Might is going to be a teacher at UA. Go and enroll. The state of All-Might’s UA employment was STRICTLY hush hush and there was no real leak about any of that. So what’s the issue? All-Might being a teacher blind sided the public and was ONLY talked about during a SINGLE scene before this. And it was RIGHT after AFO was critically injured with All-Might in their prime fight, Nighteye saw the future of All-Might, and they discussed how it’s time to choose a new symbol. And there were only 5 characters present. All-Might, who wouldn’t betray himself. Nighteye who has since passed away. Gran Torino who has been on AFO’s hitlist for YEARS as Nana’s friend and he’s successfully escaped with his life AFTER taking blows from BOTH AFO’s. Recovery Girl who while DOES have opportunity to take advantage of Deku in his bone breaking stage to give him to AFO, doesn’t and keeps him safe. And the ONLY ONE that fits giving up that information being Nezu.
And stacked with the list of OTHER suspicious actions that AREN’T cleared up with this reveal, I just sat there and said HOW IS HE MORE SUSPICIOUS?!
I’m not trying to endlessly prove Nezu is apart of this. In fact once Aoyama was revealed, I said how can I DISPROVE Nezu. And only found MORE. And I decided to air my suspicions on Nezu ANYWAY knowing the traitor because it boggles my mind.
Also AFO once had navel laser. Someone PLEASE tell me he posed like Aoyama does to use it. I love the idea AFO has a bunch of useless/unstable quirks he can give to people willing to make a deal with the devil. My biggest question is why did Aoyama try to get an SOS out AFTER AFO was caught? Before fine but after?
I don’t object to Aoyama being a great reflection of Deku receiving a quirk from All-Might and AFO. I don’t object to his motivations. I don’t object to any bit of how Aoyama’s role played out here. But it needed support to work well and I just think this part of the story needed to cover more considering the pure scope of how people dissected the story looking for the traitor. EVERY CHARACTER was dissected. And I’ll just say the smartest character in the show be slacking off.

The earliest student that we know that AFO tried to go for was Aiazawa when he was a student but he ended up taking shirakumo in the aftermath. You could argue Nezu had a hand at that but AFO could just have someone on the inside to access the quitk registry, not to mention ujiko takes note of any childs quirk that can be of use. He also knew exactly where eraser would be in the exact time during his hero work training and sent a literal monster just to counter him. In vigilantes, theres a scene where AFO shows someone a bunch of screens of different heroes working to pick from their quirks. All this to say AFO has so much middle men doing his dirty work simultaneously that finding out information for him combined with his strategic thinking is insanely efficient. So nezu having a hand inside of UA for afo as far back as aizawas school days isnt far fetched, but theres just so many other ways it was possible.

@@tobofu5978 I mean it all boils down to AFO has endless quirks with endless possibilities. And that’s fine, but Horikoshi is SO great at showing what characters accomplish logically and logistically and Nezu’s oversights here are VERY large from the smartest character in the show. And he does nothing to absolve who I think is the easiest one to suspect. He’s a LITERAL rat that hates humans. And I just don’t think Horikoshi could have overlooked that much regarding what Nezu does in this show. If he was a red herring fine, but show us that Nezu is innocent. But he doesn’t.

Btw the traitor idea changed during the course of the manga. At first it was supposed to be Tsukauchi, but Horikoshi changed it to Aoyama because people suspected him too soon.

i was always a believer that it was Kaminari, because he could've been faking the wooziness he gets from using it too much and there was a very weird panel where he did the Re-Destro L hand sign on his forehead, which lead us to believe he was a massive villain supporter in hiding. We actually thought he was going to end up using his quirk at full power and reveal it has no actual drawbacks to attack deku or the class, which is funny because AFO ended up telling Aoyama to try to kill deku when he gets the chance 😂

    • @raec5426

I don't think Hori changed it after the story began because we didn't even know Tsukauchi until late S1 after USJ and Aoyama seems to have set up since S1 from USJ.
Tsukauchi was the original concept, but he don't think he changed it once the story actually started and don't see how it fits for people guessing especially considering how much big clues he left with Aoyama the whole time.
It maybe more like original concept like how Uraraka had Mt Lady's powers but it was a draft that never made the story. So perhaps that's the same deal with Tsukauchi.

@@raec5426 Not true. What is your source? Because mine is Horikoshi himself. At Jump Festa, Horikoshi talked about it, specifically this: "At first, Tsukauchi was supposed to be a puppet of All for One.
However, I quickly changed it because the readers were immediately suspicious of him and the story didn't involve Deku in any way."
He also said that Endeavor was supposed to die during the Paranormal Liberation War, but this was changed during the drawing of Hood vs Endeavor. Horikoshi decided that he should continue living and try to change his character more.

This Reveal was also complained about, due to how rushed and sudden it felt, people felt like this Reveal happened now just to get it out of the way and Horikoshi could focus on other things, since this was leading up to the Finale and all,
I too felt like this entire Traitor Plot-point could’ve been handled better than it was, so far I do feel like the Anime has done very well with what it had, but I don’t think it will change the opinions people had when all of this First Happened in the Manga, if anything it might just light those feelings up again,
Regardless, what do you think about all of this so far, do you agree with these opinions or no?

Wasn't rushed reveal when the plot was actually delayed from when it was gonna take place originally (vol 9-10 according to vol 34 extras). lol It also takes place now because AFO has just gotten out of jail not that long ago to now call upon favors again, especially with Deku in UA. As we saw AFO drawing Deku out to ware him down and then his friends took him back to UA.

Tsukauchi's character is probably one of the more morally questionable on the heroes side. His actions here, and in Vigilantes definitely show that ngl. Also, I appreciate that the class is actually jumping to defend Aoyama instead of immediately turning on him.
