Euro NCAP Crash Test of Suzuki Jimny 2018

- Euro NCAP performs a series of crash tests on each model tested:
- a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid barrier
- an offset frontal impact test, 40% of the width of the car is striking a deformable barrier
- a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole
- a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door
A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled.
Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking systems (car to car, with a pedestrian and a cyclist target), lane support and speed assist technologies and seatbelt reminders.

@@DashCamSerbia Considering a Jeep Wrangler just got a 1 star rating, I'd say the little Jimny has done very well. And lets face it, it it had cyclist and night detection it would have earned a 4 star rating. I don't give a shit about cyclists, so all is good.

@ No. Star rating is for people who don't understand car safety (and for women), so tthey can compare different cars by them. For people who understand it, there is the pdf. Adult occupant safety of this car is bad, report says so.

Yes it does look good in the five door version. Sadly not available in the U.K. or Europe.
Still buying it - Remember, this vehicle is supposed to be in the lightweight kei car segment and it generally doesn't haul a$$ very well.
Watch other kei cars in the JNCAP tests. They occasionally... flip over.
At any rate, Japan's roads are... well, many highways are 60-80kph max so....
edit: Also remember in Japan only as 'recently' until June 1 2008, it was NOT COMPULSORY TO WEAR A SEATBELT as a rear seat passenger. (This has all completely changed of course). That's how slowly and safely the Japanese generally drive. This is what happens when you take a car 'designed' for one market and into another... their safety standards are wholly different. Of course a 3 star rating looks bad in Europe where you you have autobahn's and whatnot (And it'll probably look bad in Aus too, where I patiently await this cars arrival)
With my current Jimny, once you drive it like it's a truck rather than as a car you're fine. It's assuming that because it's sized like a small car that somehow the ladder frame chassis, beam axles and high ground clearance will magically make it behave like a car that causes the danger. This is first and foremost a serious off road truck. It is a very small truck though - when I see my tracks in the mud they look more like they're from a slightly wider than average quad rather than a 4x4...

@@peglor duster excuse is platform old as f..k. but still perform quite well. I the jimny the chassis and the body are two different things joined by bolts of course it'll be not as good as the rest, still performed really good. I wonder how the Gwagon will perform
Not really, Japanese drive fast in mountains because their surface are grippy.
And on the high way, I saw people driving over 150 multiple times. Only the outer lane follows the speed limit.
There's one time I got caught at a slope driving 140, I'm sure the police catch up with speed over 200.

"In the frontal offset test, there was insufficient pressure in the driver's airbag to prevent it from 'bottoming out', allowing the head to contactthe steering wheel.
The passenger compartment was extensively deformed in the offset test, especially around the door-frame and the score for the driver's chest was penalised for this unstable collapse. Combined with marginal dummy readings, protection for this body area was rated as weak. in the full-width, rigid-barrier impact protection of the head of the rear passenger dummy was rated as weak.
Tests on the front seats and head restraints showed marginal protection against whiplash injury in a rear impact. "

Only got three star in the Euro ratings, mostly for what "..Euro NCAP described as “its underwhelming driver assistance systems”. " ...as one mag stated. Which for me gives it an additional star because most of those "driver assistance systems" are annoying devices that interfere with the drivers ability to control the car. No thank you Mrs Nannystate Government.

Lower mass equals in a lower kinetic energy that has to be absorbed. That means according to the laws of physics lighter cars have an advantage compared to heavier cars when they crash into a immovable barrier (like in this Case). Its all about the structure and the load path of the car and how good the impact energy is distributed in the chassis.
A low mass of the car is not the cause of greater damage but rather a result of fewer load paths/ thinner sheet metal of energy absorbing parts.

it's been like that since the beggining:
2 solid axles, body on frame, low range transfer case........ both cars have that, the renegade didn't got none of it, the only thing is, here in spain, you can buy 2,5 jimnys for the price of a wrangler (a basic wrangler, if we look at the rubicon, cost almost like a cheap house)
both are serious offroaders, the renegade is a suv with some offroad capability (not much compared to those 2)

why are cars allowed to be released to the public with this low of a rating its beyond stupid
The test is rubbish, stars are taken away for stuff like lack of beep for unfastened seatbelt. NCAP is a lie, car makers doing crumple zones just to pass test with flying colors. And id still rather be in this in a crash than in VW Up! which has 5 star. And last years 5 star car would never get 5 stars this year. and look how many cars are being sold for 5 or more years in a row .
Still will buy it, way better than any bmw,benz or land rovers, japanese quality will be always my first choice

3 stars is low for any car even worse that its a new one. It's a nice car by all accounts, but safety is a big selling point nowadays, so it wouldn't appeal to me.
since 2009 euroncap take in to account what year the car was tested, so the 3 star Jimny would probably be a 5 star ten years ago, it isn't that bad considering its a light weight off-road car. look at the Lada Niva:)
