Those little portraits are so nice- what a great way to show the range of this product! We love that you emphasized warm/cool, because that is so important with portraits. People new to art sometimes don't realize that we don't just mix "skin tones", we mix spectral colors and the same palette can paint pretty much anything. It's funny, we start out as artists thinking we know facts about what everything looks like, and as we go through life as artists, we realize that those assumptions just get in the way of really looking and seeing!

Oh my goodness! You knocked this review out of the park! Spot on skin tones on everyone of your samples.
Sooo nice to see them on actual portraits instead of a square swatch.
    Thanks so much!

Thanks for the review. I think the reference photo of the African American man is one that Lindsay has used before. Only because of the unique bone structure ( I guess that's how to explain it) and just a forward facing stare and turtle neck. Have a great day

I never thought to try little thumbnail paintings like this first, but I love how they all came out. I just finished my first portrait painting and I only used 3 colors. I agree you don't need all these colors, but it is fun to try different color combinations like you did here.

What a great idea to do thumbnails to practice portraits. Helps me with my fear of 'wasting paper' (working of overcoming that) with bad pictures. I have most of these colors of something similar on my pallet so I'm gonna give it a try.
Seeing you use this set to mix all the skin/hair colors was very informative for me. Thanks for sharing.

  • @sigriston

Haha… before watching the video, I thought those portraits were not thumbnails, but more full-size portraits! 🙀 Well done Emily!
Anyways, I love thumbnails, they’re the perfect way to figure things out (mixes, values etc) in preparation for a full-size piece… and also doing them on their own for practice is super fun and great for killing the crippling perfectionism that rears its ugly head from time to time 😺
Finally, I love Royal Talens products and am very impressed by what you showed us of this Rembrandt set. I would totally buy this if I didn’t already have my current palette. From Talens, one thing I can’t live without is their black Indian ink - SO underrated considering how dark and water resistant it is. Definitely my favorite! 😸

First time to comment. These are just wonderful thumbnails. I love doing portraits but haven’t done many yet. I have a 48 set of the Van Goghs and have been pleased with them. I will check to see if I have these colors. Great video Emily.

Hi Emily, another great video. I love my Rembrandt set. I mostly use my Daniel Smith, but every time I get the Rembrandt set out I fall in love with the cleaness all over again. I've notice the price has dripped on Amazon for the full set too. The thumb nail sketches were amazing, I haven't gotten to your portrait section of the classes yet, but definitely next on my list❤

It looks like a great pan to move around with for convenience sake. Having said that, it's not available in Australia yet and ordering from the US is cost prohibitive. Our dollar sucks against the USD and the postage is laughable. I will keep an eye out for it landing here though. Thanks for the review, really love this format. All the very best from Oz!

Its a great gift idea and the whole Royal Talens with Art Creation (being kids-student hobbyist bugdet) then Van gogh for Artists-students and then Rembrandt for Proffesional. Being categorised makes it easier to gift to someone like...oh you paint portairts hmmmm or landscapes or the Van Gogh series with metalic paints. Ive noticed an AMAZING difference in my Sap Green from Van Gogh the paint is MUCH MUCH more juicier and so much vibrant. Thank you for the video and demonstation
