The Medicare costs are also a huge factor I read the average cost is $235 for all the parts and part B is mandatory $185 out of social security check. The only option is to have hardly any assets and qualify for Medicaid. This is crazy😢

Part B is not mandatory. Part A is not mandatory either but if you cancel it you would be required to pay back all the months you had it if you weren't required to pay a Part A premium.

@Mary20002 who's WRONG?? Was that for me? Because if it was I AM NOT wrong. I'm college educated, a degree in Architectural engineering, and MANY years of experience in many things. You can be forced to go back to work all you want. Ageism is REAL, and guess what? It was covered with the Civil Rights Act AND is part of DEI. That's not only for BLACK PEOPLE. Those things cover discrimination against age, sex, gender, LGBTQ, didabled, etc, etc, etc. Sure, a senior will get hired here and there, but for the most part, NOBODY'S HIRING OLD PEOPLE. I'm 71 so I don't even look. But I have a friend who is 60 now but started looking at 50 and has gotten nothing. Plenty of experience in banking and their excuse is that she's too qualified for the money they will pay. When she offered to take less, they claimed they couldn't do it.

Most people think that they can live fine on social security alone 😮 I knew back in the 1980’s that social security wouldn’t be enough, nor was it created to fund someone’s full retirement.

@cjhoward409 lots of people knew back on the 1980's that soc sec wouldn't be enough. They also may have known that it wasn't created to fund someone's full retirement. But does that knowledge give them money to put in a retirement fund when they may be making $10/hr? How does knowing that help a single mother OR father raising kids and barely able to make rent? Maybe you had extra money but MANY people don't. Not to mention that FICA is snatching money from every check they get. You do know that the federal min. wage in the US IS STILL $7.25 and there are people still earning that. Have you seen the HOMELESS in this country? Not because they are drug addicts, or alcoholics or have mental issues. But because THEY CANT PAY FOR A PLACE TO LIVE ON WHAT THEY MAKE!! I hate it when you people leave these stupid comments.

So now you wait and hope the prices don't go up any higher. In Canada, your $460 would be down to $150 savings a month. The worst is yet to come. I have talked to many people who say soon they will not be able to afford to live in their paid off house.
In regards to Orman, that is probably the second best option for the average person. When you get a house, you are leveraging. You don't own the house, so you are leveraging the value of the house against your loan. With a down payment, your lender is typically in the positive and the more equity you have in the home, the better for them. When you get a mortgage from a bank, it is lower than an unsecured loan. If you were to borrow money to invest, you can write off the interest. In the USA you can also write off mortgage interest.
Since you can't get an unsecured loan for a great rate, it makes sense for the financially inclined to borrow money from the equity in the house or get a great rate and not pay down the mortgage aggressively. This allows you to write off two things and lower your taxes getting you a refund. Also you have access to more cash to save and money to invest.
Really wealthy people don't own their property or their cars. They just use them and write off the losses and get a tax break.
What I said above was money in your house is dead and cannot compound. A paid off house and one that isn't paid off increase or decrease in value whether you pay it off or not. If you don't have a scalable or compounding investment when you retire, you will just run out of gas and have to sell the place anyway.
As a side note, anybody who outright owns their house is prime to have it stolen buy people claiming you sold the house to them. If there was a small mortgage with the bank the house couldn't be sold until the debt was cleared. This gives you some security.

I seen one RUclips video of a senior who was paying mortgage and retired. This senior sold her house and moved to another state that was cheaper to pay bills and lived. This senior said she now lives comfortably on social income and doesn't have to work.
Many seniors are selling their huge homes and either are going towards tiny living, living in their RV's or living in their vans or cars. These seniors all say they are able to live on their social security income and not work and are happy.
As a senior on one income you have to cut back on some things because everything is so expensive. Cut back on mortgage and maybe theirs something else that is not needed. But I know medications can be expensive.

Well, I have an elderly neighbor couple. They are barely surviving on just both their social security checks. They have no mortgage and no other debt. But… life is expensive. They have medical bills (what Medicare doesn’t pay) and their house is 75 years old and needs to be demolished quite honestly. A truck that’s over 25 years old and bald tires. They’ll say they’re just fine on social security. That’s not living.

Social Security was never meant to be anything more than a supplement for retirement and to fund around 30% of your retirement. It was never meant to solely live on. People paid very little into Social Security for their retirement, because it is also used as life insurance and disability insurance. The qualifications for Social Security retirement are super low. Only 40 quarters (10 years) and you only need to earn currently 7240 per year. People need to save a lot more for their retirement than just Social Security.
