  • The Cats stormed back into the final five with this nine point come from behind win against the Swans in round 21, 1987. A 70 m Bruce Lindner bomb in the final term helped seal the win in front of 23,953 at the SCG. We pick up action early in the first term.

Brisbane v Footscray from Carrara was on at the same time. Since the ABC was already covering this game in Sydney, the Carrara game bizarrely went untelevised. This prompted the VFL to explore another time slot for the Bears to avoid another similar tv clash with either the Swans or Eagles home games on Sundays since Sundays was being molded to be a day to feature predominantly non Vic sides shown live into Vic. As a result, the Bears did play a few Saturday Night games at Carrara in the late 80s/early 90s.

That’s awesome. I was there that day as a 10 year old Cats fanatic. We always had pretty good support in Sydney.

This is one of my very first life memories.
I was three years old, there with my Dad, sitting on the outer wing, we left with about 10-15 mins to go (Cats losing), we get it in the car and, incredibly, they had hit the front.
Can’t believe how clear this memory is.

I remember watching this nail biter on a cold wet Sunday on the TV in Melb. Great up load. Do you have the full version of the Brisbane 1992 record score game?

An unlikely win by Geelong. Geelong 18.23.131 (Goals: Couch 5, Turner 3, Bairstow 2, Christensen 2, Lindner 2, Russell 2, Bews, Denham) defeated Sydney 18.14.122 (Goals: Capper 6, Mitchell 4, Morwood 4, Bayes, Bolton, Thripp, Wright). This was the loss that finally broke the Swans premiership chances in 1987. Even though they won the following week in the last round against Fitzroy, the win was a struggle which exposed the Swans weaknesses in the finals. Sadly the Swans were ultimately eliminated from the finals in straight sets by losing badly to Hawthorn by 99 points in the Qualifying Final, then losing to Melbourne in the first semi final by 76 points. The Swans burned out at the wrong time. If the Swans had have played the way they did in July of that year in the finals, well they would've come very close to the premiership. Alas it didn't happen.

notice in this game they start the game with a red ball and change to a yellow ball at half time.
why don't they do that today in the 3:20pm games ?

Brownless and Ablett in the reserves! Would have won by at least six more goals with them in the ones.
