  • A lot of folks don't realize that playing fake words, or "phonies," is a big part of Scrabble at the tournament level. Many a game has been won by a clever phony that got by an unsuspecting opponent, and just as many games have been lost by humorous, and sometimes embarrassing, failed attempts to sneak a phony by.
In this video, we'll look at what I believe are the 5 most hilarious phonies of all time. Some have meanings you could potentially infer, and some are just downright ridiculous. But what they all are is utterly hilarious, so you won't want to miss them!

    Tetiart:
1: A person who designs and/or builds tetrahedrons

3: The art of sculpting tetrahedrons.

@@mackmeller I swear the most fun part about phonies is coming up with definitions for them.
In all fairness all of us in that scrabble game were in 5th grade, but it was still funny. It didn't get hostile but he was so sure that was a word and the rest of us were just laughing, even us 10 year olds could tell that word was ridiculous!

"Only Andy really knows what a VOUCINNINI is. The general consensus among the Scrabble community is that it is some kind of pasta." LMAOOOOOO one of the greatest lines in lexicon history. VOUCINNINI is like some legendary, mystical being, similar to the Lockness Monster.

If anyone does want an answer as to why there aren't any Bobetahs running around anywhere:
Lions and tigers can interbreed to form ligers and tigons - they're both part of the same genus, Panthera, and probably split off from each other around 2 million years ago. It's honestly something of a surprise that they interbreed as well as they do.
Cheetahs and bobcats, on the other hand, are in related but different genuses, and diverged from each other more like 5 to 6 million years ago, and so the chances of their DNA and reproduction matching up are lower.
Almost all cat species do have 38 chromosomes, so it's not completely impossible, and they're similar sizes. But the added bonus that cheetahs live in Africa (and are vulnerable to extinction) while Bobcats live in an entirely different climate in North America, makes them unlikely to get jiggy. And I don't think there's a great deal of scientific research cash waiting to see if bobetahs are possible.

For "lourerer", I think the closest thing that could make some sense is if he was thinking of laurer, an archaic synonym of laurel, which can be used as a verb, i.e. to crown/award someone, so laurerer/laureler could be someone who crowns/awards someone. Not sure if any if these variants would've been valid in Scrabble, though 😅

My PC recently shut down forever, and since I had all of my distractions installed or otherwise readily accessible there, I had to find something else to do. Upon locating and promptly dusting off my old laptop I started to solely focus on Scrabble (NA) for the first time ever -- partly because no other games would run on it, but also in big part due to discovering such great RUclips content on it.
I've been binge-watching Will Anderson's, Joshua Sokol's and, of course, your content like a madman, and almost any time I'm not playing or studying the game, I'm watching NASPA tournament games without skipping a single second. Lately one of my greatest sources of excitement are new Scrabble videos, and I really want to commend you especially for your unmatched upload frequency and superbly informative and entertaining content! This kind of content really builds a sense of community and keeps the scene alive. Thanks for that!
