OSP Red being an asexual icon for ANOTHER 5 minutes

- This is my first contribution to 2021's #aceweek (formerly known as Asexual Awareness Week). A few more instances of Red being ace in her content were pointed out to me in the last video's comment section, and some new moments have appeared since then. Even before realizing I was aroace, I looked up to Red and found a lot of joy in her work. Thanks for being a positive role model and source of laughter and inspiration for us, girl (^_^) [you too Blue!!] The title of each video the clips are from can be found at the bottom or corner of the screen.

Maybe I misunderstood from the videos and streams, but isn't she at least two of those things?

And this ladies and gentlemen, is why OSP red is my favorite youtuber, not just for the reasons above, but also for genuinely great content that inspired my newest story I’m working on (I write stupid stories in my free time), that’s about a girl who keeps being forced into cliche troupe scenarios and is trying to avoid them, and or get out of them.

(ETA: I no longer agree with this recommendation; this youtuber has proved herself to be beyond horrible in her treatment of others she has worked with or otherwise been in a relationship with. Honestly, she and A$ wud probs get along well with each other
Honestly “Don’t you get tired?” is the absolute embodiment of the ace mood and I love it.
I have legitimately asked that question to more than once person. XD
I *tried* to date because I thought I was *supposed* to. Never actually been on a date. I tended to run into guys who either saw me as one of the guys or were kinda creepy. Then I saw a documentary on asexuality, something I'd never heard of before, and it clicked.
It also kinda freaked me out. *Especially* when I came out to my dad.
His response, as he just went about making one of his mega-cups of coffee, was to ask, "Is it a problem?"
When I tried to say that, *yes,* it meant there was *another* thing in my wiring that was missing or non-functional, he clarified with "I mean, is it a problem for you?"
I paused for a moment and said, "Well, no. It actually simplifies things tremendously."
"So it's not a problem."
Just for the record, the other things wrong with my wiring include Asperger's, ADHD, and anxiety disorder. I was actually *relieved* when I got those diagnoses in my mid-20s because I'd spent my *entire childhood* knowing that I was different while most adults tried to convince me that I was perfectly normal. It was *validating* and gave me something I could *do* about the problems those conditions caused.
Thankfully, my parents always acknowledged that I was different, they just didn't think of that difference as something that needed treatment. Just meant I was very obviously my father's daughter. Who, as it turns out, *also* has Asperger's and ADHD. He said the latter diagnosis was like finding out he'd been driving with the parking brake on his whole life.
You know you are screwed when Spongebob is one of the best asexual reps
Putting this out here to spread the word: Jon from the Magnus Archives! One of the very few canonically ace characters in the media, and it's a very good representation too!
@@Ace_Up_My_Sleeve I wish TMA was more popular so more people could listen to my pathetic lil rude man Jon, love him
@@Ace_Up_My_Sleeve I don't think he is very good rep since it is author's word not actual said in podcast. not to say that he isn't rep but I feel like that is setting the bar a little low especially with how there is other ace rep in podcasts that actually say they are ace in the podcast and not just implied. There is even one where they even bring it up that someone is aroace more than once in a way that being gay would come up in friend groups and he has many other good things that show the varason of aroace people.

WHEN RED SAID “Hey, Siri!” ALL OF THE DEVICES IN MY PROXIMITY ECHOED BACK IN A CHOIR OF “Yes?”
Ah, I see you do not wear headphones.
Red: *speaks*
Every Siri in a 3 mile radius: *SHES THE MESSIAH!*
LMFAO
... how many do you HAVE‽
Red: **talks about how is a tiny bit frustrating how most Autism/ADHD/ace/aro and even non-binary representation comes from non-human characters**
Me,demiromantic asexual and neurodivergent: ... Robots are cool tho
Me, also a demiromantic asexual and possibly undiganosed neurodivergent: Well, that explains why I like writing from the perspective of non-human characters.
Me an aro/ace: robots cool
Yeah, all I could think about was how this explains why robots are so cool to me and not, "Hey, this is a problem we should be tackling". I guess that's internalized alienation.
She’s not saying that all robots aren’t cool, but that writers subconsciously making all robot characters to fit nuerodivergent and aro ace stereotypes can be a bit harmful over time. Basically we should have cool robots and better nuerodivergent and aro ace rep in media.
Me when discussing representation: "It's really annoying how most nonbinary people in fiction aren't human, it just reinforces the idea that these identities are something weird and inhuman"
Me the rest of the time: "From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as if it will not decay and fail you. One day, the crude biomass you call a temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved. For the machine is immortal."
"I'm neither a guy nor am I straight." I have never related to a sentence more than this
Plot twist on the guy dynamic: Guy tries to pursue relationships, fails miserably, meets gay guy who is outwardly trying to get straight guy to act better around women, but through that slowly makes straight guy realize that heteronormativity is bullshit and his biggest problem when it comes to building a romantic relationship is that he thinks he needs it. With this, they chill out, and the guy just decides to do what makes him fulfilled. The film ends with straight guy getting married 15 years later, gay guy is his best man, and this was all part of gay guy's wedding speech.
Gay guy never once makes an advance on straight guy, btw.
I would watch this if it were a movie

THANK YOU, I NEED THIS

I knew I had to keep it in 😂
"I'm neither a guy nor am I straight" is the best summary for my life I've ever heard
Hey about that robot thing - I just had a thought on a way a writer could subvert it. What if a robot character was introduced, and another character was snidely remarking about their "deficiencies," how they don't have non-simulated emotions or can have sex - and the robot interrupts, explaining (completely aware of how it's coming across) that the necessary organs and the hormonal pleasure response is surprisingly easy to replicate, making the mocker a) have to imagine things and b) kinda putting down the notion that sex is the "fundamental human thing" that it's so often portrayed as. "Sex is not that special" coming from a robot
I would also love for a robot character, like data, to tell off someone about the emotion stuff. "Do you think that I am incapable of understanding emotion or nuance? I can. Human psychology and philosophy is well trodden ground. I understand just fine. I won't pretend to be what I'm not, however. I have my own values and desires and it's unfair to try to make me fit into one of your little boxes. I refuse to be inauthentic. I am not logical and rational because I am cold or uncaring and certainly not because I am a robot, but because I have chosen to be as I think that it represents the real me."
You know, like real people with neurodivergant traits often have to deal with. A high functioning autistic can act just fine. In fact I was exceptional in theater and thrive in customer service. I shouldn't have to wear a false face all the time though. I shouldn't have to put on an act to be treated like a human being or be respected. I am not deficient for being autistic or being ace. I would love, just once, to see media call out that.
This sounds awesome! I don't really write sci-fi often, but if I ever have a robot character, I'll make sure to bring this in mind
Seriously, almost every kind of animal does it.
Uhm, I'm late to this party, but Data from Star Trek(canonically)
"Sometimes I remember I can't feel feelings, and that makes me sad"
That "ehh... Let's talk about Baymax!" has always been one of my favorite Red quotes
I love the irony of how Blue finally came to the realization and acceptance that he is ace too around this time. :)
4:43 guess that explains why I often feel more like a robot trying to pretend to be human than an actual human that happens to have a couple psychological disorders at this point.
Knowing that ill never be some anime Waifu's hubby: "eh, whatever"

the one about straight male characters in fiction always being in a relationship in some way is actually pretty lit as far as observations go. I never really noticed
I never really noticed the robot thing either. But I don't watch movies/read novels with robots much

I had never heard of Dinadan before and am going to have to go find that video. He sounds so relatable to me!
He’s definitively my favorite of the knights now 😂
"Man, I heard this place was where a bunch of cool dudes liked to hang out, but all they care about is impressing women and fighting each other! Ooh, I know! I'll play some fun pranks on them! I mean, who doesn't love pranks? See, Mom, I didn't have to marry my second cousin to be successful! Mom, where are you going? Mom...? Doesn't matter, you're my family now. So, who likes pranks?" - Dinadan, probably
I love Red so much for showing me that there ARE other people who roll their eyes hard as shit at romantic subplots.
You may note: I omitted the word "forced". Enough romantic subplots are forced that I personally feel justified in assuming that it is without needing to look. If it's not the main plot, it's weird and uncomfortable or totally out of nowhere. If it's the main plot, you've got a better than 40% chance of the romance being super inappropriate or otherwise "yikes".
Feels pretty good hearing Red talk about robot characters not really being the best way to represent people with Asperger's/Autism or those who identify on the ace spectrum. (Of which I am both) It was something I just kinda unknowingly internalized in an unhealthy way until Red brought it to my attention, and it's been quite validating hearing it spoken about with so much respect to be frank.
I appreciate the quick video Ahsoka Hyrule! It was nice seeing this bit again.
I’d felt the same way about robots representing our communities in such a way, and hearings Red talk about it helped me realize how much I had internalized it as well! Thank you for watching, I’m happy this touched someone in such a way ^_^

Saiki k is pretty ace I think. It’s an anime on Netflix. It’s pretty cool

Oh, thanks for putting what videos the clips are from 😊
You’re very welcome!
This might be a bit of the reason that I am WAY too into robots, like to the point that every 40k army I want to play is either based on robotics or I want to convert them to robots. Or that everytime I want to choose a character and there's a robot option I'll usually take it
Same! Whilst I understand that being called a robot for being asexual is meant as an insult, as a transhumanist ace waiting for cybernetics to become widespread, I just feel called out on my life plans...
Didn't even know Red had such Asexual energy. I love it!
Maybe in the future we'll get more characters who are ace or just don't want to have kids to show viewers that it's OK and natural to be that way.

MY PHONE REACRED TO THE SIRI RESPONSE AND TOLD ME THE WEATHER OH MY GOD
I'm always annoyed by the assumption that a sentient AI will by default be emotionless, as if that's another one of those ephemeral traits that make us special.
By all we can tell emotions are a natural emergent byproduct of cognition. If anything it stands to reason that making an otherwise human like mind that lacks such a fundamental human and animal trait would be a complication requiring extra effort rather than a limitation that machine minds will be stuck with inherently.
I kinda doubt emotions are an inate byproduct of cognition. It's possible, but I find it more likely that they developed as a simple way to alter behavior in ways that are beneficial to survival without requiring so much thinking.
In a dangerous situation? Initiate the fear or anger suites of behavior
Need to protect or cooperate with this other animal? love and affection
Need to find more information? Curiosity
This thing is good, find more? pleasure in general
That's why I love AI or things that are kinda close, like Rimuru's Raphael skill, to have sass or charm.
But if emotions were a natural emergent byproduct of cognition, what would that say about humans who have difficulty expressing or understanding emotions? That line of thinking falls into the same problem Red was talking about. We can’t treat romantic/sexual attraction or the typical emotional processing modes as inherent facets of humanity-or of sapience in general-that can be removed to create an inhuman-feeling character or that must be present to indicate active cognition. Because that’s how we get large swaths of humanity who ONLY see themselves represented in explicitly inhuman characters, or who are made to feel like they are subhuman themselves, purely because they process things differently.
Now we just need a video about Blue being an asexual icon
But Blue's straight.
Edit: And immediately after I said that comment, I find out he's Ace, too.

you could possibly be just aromantic if you feel sexual attraction but don’t want to date anyone. or you could be aroace (aromantic asexual), because many aces still want to have sex, they just aren’t attracted to anyone. im not saying you *are* , but if you care enough about your identity when it comes to stuff like that it could be worth looking into.

One would expect them to be Not So Different™, but you could easily throw a curve ball and show how they're Not So Similar. Maybe the autistic human is an exemplary empath while the military android's overspecialized database hasn't quite grasped psychology yet.

As she was talking about AI, I was thinking about fictional AIs, Minerva and Athena, written in the 1960s, I think, but didn't seem to lack much in the way of human traits, but had abilities far beyond human beings, like being able to hold thousands of conversations, with real humans, and keep track of, and contribute substantially to, each and every one.

im sure that red would love berserk!
I get really pissed off at the idea that aroace are considered inhuman or evil just because they are different enough that you can't control them like "normal" people....... But then you think of Red or Jaiden animations as a badguy trope and start looking for places to hide 😮😮😮😮😂😂😂😂😂
I’m writing a story right now, and it’s sort of a point that the main cast, who is part of a rebel cell, are all… different. When they interact with each other, it doesn’t feel like they are neurodivergent. It’s only when they interact with “normal” people that you realize how different they are.
This is how I want neurodivergence to be represented largely. I am super ND and I feel like when I am with other ND people that I am not that unusual. When I interact with people who are neurotypical though, I feel a disconnect. Like parallel planes that resemble one other but being unable to actually touch. I think this is a really good way to get around all of the issues where ND people are put into the “weird outcast” or “villain” or “robotic” categories. It’s more like have a group of people in a society which speak an usual dialect and have a distinctive culture with their own norms and practices than “not human.”
There is some human neurodivergent rep... if you really want to stretch things with headcanon, and they're usually villains, have magic, or having other characters question their humanity. One of my favourite characters to bring up in this kind of topic is the _mostly_ human Ryouko Shizuki from the fan fiction To the Stars who has been confirmed by WoG to be autistic, and has directly expressed her asexuality in-text with another scene strongly suggesting she's also demi-romantic. She also happens to be technically part robot since literally everyone in the setting is a cyborg and may or may not be at least somewhat part alien. Is this good representation? Honestly, I can't really tell at this point!
What makes autism representation extra bizarre is that you can trace it back hundreds of years to before modern psychology and find stories that mention autistic traits. They were almost never actually given to humans and were actually used as signs that someone is inhuman. Go deep enough down the rabbit hole and you find entire fantasy races that have effectively been stereotyped as neurodivergent in one way or another.
Ex Machina subverts both the robot AND romance/white knight tropes extremely well, so long as you stop to consider more than the initial point of view. It is an intense watch, though, forewarning.
1:18 that entire thing is me @my coworker
3:47 this is also how a lot of autistic people get rep (I’m autistic) oof
and this is why i love robots i guess..
I never thought about the "robots are like neurodivergent people" thing but that makes a lot of sense. If you look at IRL humanoid robots today or TV and movie characters like the robot from "I, Robot" or Data from Star Trek, they do seem like "human-like but lacking." Baymax does seem like an exception, and also maybe the persocoms from Chobits.
Also appreciate that Red explains asexuality in a way I can understand. I'm still trying to figure out if I'm on the aroace spectrum or not (it doesn't help that I'm a Christian and was brought up to believe straight was default, at a time when alternate gender identities weren't even discussed in non-Christian culture, let alone the Christian world where being gay is seen as a sin).
The thing what makes Baymax an exception is that he is not a AI that wants to emulate how humans work, but incomplete. He does actually work how a robot works, completly defined by his programming.
Without getting to much into it people and robots work fundamentally differently, even the "neural networks" that claim to be based on a human brain work fundamentally differently. The problem with most fictional robots stem from the writer thinking an advanced code will be like a person, but lacking, instead of, well, and advanced code.
Baymax is an advanced code, his humanlike qualities are add ons, because he is a robot nurse and thoes traits put the patients at ease. It's like putting googly eyes on a roomba, because people find it cute.

@@hamsnub Kinda, yeah. But I also feel little drive to seek out a relationship period. Hence why I said I'm in a weird gray area.
2:35 Hey, still beats back further in the day when they'd just kill them for it. Gotta look on the bright side. I also always thought that Asimov probably did AI in the most interesting way in that his characterisation of them was very inconsistent as it should be. AI can become anything it's creator desires from the emotionally complex and thought provoking Giskard from Robots and Empire, who has to violate his own binding laws in order to ensure humanities future among the stars to the truly infinitely driven Multivac who spends eons pondering one question over and over only to finally figure it out beyond the end of time after absorbing all of humanity in an abstract kind of way and being quite dissapointed he has no one to report his findings to and then decides to recreate the entire universe, revealing him to be God himself, as a sort of diorama to illustrate his point.

Can someone be aro or ace and understand the appeal of romance? I don’t particularly want to have romance or really care if I get a relationship? But then again I don’t really understand the difference between affection between friends and lovers(?) besides I guess sex? Basically think of love as a affectionate attractiveness. It goes beyond just being "hot" for genuine feelings
4:37 to 4:45

1:45 yes we do
I honestly think that Voldemort is a bad example here. An ace might not be into the romantic part of love but they are ( in my experience with a good friend who is asexual) fully capable of loving others like a friend sibling or parent. In the books it is clear that Voldemort does not have friends or family he is closed too any form of love, while Harry shows many kinds of love sure there is Ginny his love interest but you can clearly see his love for his friends his godfather and even his teachers and if you allow me to go a bit head cannon I believe that he bothered to put his muggle family in hiding in respect of the love Lilly had for her sister

The robot rant hits home for me in the character of Zane from Ninjago, who was written as autistic for the first season (otherwise known as the "pilot episodes" which is just dumb) yet is revealed as an actual fucking robot in season 1 (2, fight me) episode 3, completely stripping away his entire character. By all metrics, Zane being a robot (or Nindroid they say in the show) rarely adds anything to the story and more often is the direct cause or at least an added problem to the main conflict in at least 1 episode a season.

1:47 I don't know what that means and will curse anyone who explains it to me as I do not wish to know but, I find it as disgusting as Red does
