I'm that engineer, with a family that needs a do it all, everything car. It was always my dream to have an M3, the downer is price. People will say "buy an m340" but in my mind that's a compromise for my goals and being a car enthusiast, the want to have the top trim I know would continue to eat at me. The sad part is all the older M3s that are in decent shape are still very expensive. A last year generation f80 comp pack is still up in the 60s for low miles. and its 6 years old! I rent cars all the time while at work. Other cars just feel like they're held together by cheap plastic parts, even new 2024 models. They feel like the engine, transmission, suspension are not in sync. I drove a new Ford lately and the accelerator pedal was so vague that it was just a suggestion by me than an input. When you get in the BMW, it's just smooth, everything is tight, steering, brakes, engine, and if you just touch the accelerator it just goes. I have balding tires right now and my ride is just silky smooth and quiet still, it's a testament to BMW suspension. BMW just has the best chassis and drive, that's what you're paying for.

It’s facts. Even a base model F30 328i without any sport package has better throttle response than its class competitors. I’ve driven other cars with similar and sometimes even more power than a 328i and they feel noticeably slower under 60% throttle. Like I drove a Lexus IS300 which has a 2.0 liter turbo four just like the Beemer and you have to floor it to achieve any meaningful acceleration whereas the 328i, even in comfort mode, accelerates smoothly and adequately with very little throttle. Those Bavarian bastards just know how to do driving dynamics.

Just a reality check, a 2004 base BMW M3 coupe starts at $47,100 MRSP, $78,179 adjusted for inflation. The convertible base MSRP is $92,000 in 2024 dollars as well. The middle class buying power has eroded at the same time but the car prices are bang on with inflation, and you get so much performance nowadays for that money.

These are the good times right now. wages have outpaced inflation the past few years, unemployment is at historic lows, the economy is doing well, home ownership rates are on pace with previous generations. If your own personal situation is bad I feel for ya, but don't pretend that's the situation for the whole economy and everyone else. All the people doing well aren't on the Internet complaining all day. If things suck for you right now, take advantage of opportunities and do better for yourself.

Interestingly, I am in the opposite of position of you, and the G80 still fits my use-case perfectly. I live in a very large city, don't drive much (5k miles a year), and parking is hard to come by/expensive. If I had more than one car I would need to street park one of them and the likelihood of that car getting broken into, cat converter stolen, tickets, etc... is very high. So the notion of a single car that can satisfy the enthusiast in me when going for a fun drive, have rear folding seats for random errands, be comfortable enough for 3-6 hour weekend road trips, and be highly capable for a track day... all in one car... is pretty awesome.
If I had more garage room I would for sure want something like an Evora 400, Z06, Cayman... but even still, my daily would likely still be something like an M3/M5/RS7/X5M, etc... The beauty of the G80/G82 is you get all that practicality and on a track it would beat or be nose-to-nose with any of the aforementioned sports cars (and even many supercars).

I get what Mark is saying. I can't believe we are at this place in the world where M3s cost this much. I was young in HS and college when my "halo" cars the e36,e46, and finally the e90 M3 were produced. Always expensive, but seemed manageable to own at some point. I lusted over these cars and said one day I'll have one. Finally (and fortunately) having a great career that is paying off after years of hard work, my day is coming. I have a G80 M3 6MT that just arrived at port and should be delivered in the next few weeks. I geeked out and painstakingly went through all options and tracked it like a car nerd throughout the entire build process. I thought I'd go for an m2, but my better half convinced me otherwise. Jack nailed the buyer type to a T. I want to have a fun driving experience when I'm at home. I want to drive my car and let my kids have fun with me on the way to take them to school (memories). The reason my original fun car is sitting in shortage is due to lack of versatility. Wrapping all this up, I'm thrilled. Yes, it is overpriced. Yes, it has muted handling compared to years past, but wow, I'm about to own the last gen manual transmission RWD, ICE rocket sled that produces nearly 500HP. It is the "Jack of all trades" :) . I didn't consider any other car. This hits all the marks for what I want out of a non daily fun car. What a time to live in and I'm finally living the dream of M car ownership. You guys have described me to a tee. I had a c5z when I was younger, and I miss it every day. Nothing else I’ve driven has felt anywhere near as visceral and connected as that car. Now I have a wife and kids and drive an STI. It’s a fantastic and all-rounder that feels way more mechanical than most other cars in its price point on the road today, but it’s an econo-box and it feels like it. The vette feels like it slips on you like a silk glove. The STI feels like you’re in a glass shoebox. Where I am today, with a wife and two kids, I need something that does everything but gives me a sense of joy when I drive it. I’d love a CT5-V BW, but living with New England winters doesn’t lend itself well to a monster v8 rwd car, as amazing as it is. So I’m considering an m3 competition xdrive. I just bought a 2024 G80 M3. Break-in service is coming up. Simply put, this car is incredible. The internet hates the grilles, but when I asked everyone, it's generally accepted and people do like it. I have people come up to me all the time to ask about it. The carbon bucket sets are so nice to sit in and really makes the car. I can go on and on, but I am commenting because this video and what Jack said hits the nail on the head. Not sure I need two cars with the G80 being an all-rounder which goes god-mode when it wants to.
I kept my 2017 Honda Accord because I thought daily driving an M3 would be tedious and challenging. Absolutely not. In fact, in comfort mode will all settings on efficient, this car can drive very comfy(like an Accord) even with the carbon buckets. I get groceries all the time with no trouble, as the trunk is huge. I am now even wondering why to keep my accord at all. I don't really need it unless I wanted to keep the mileage low on the G80, that's it.
    Great video SG!

I’m the guy who only has that fun in a car (which happens to be my biggest hobby by orders of magnitude) on the way to work, as the way home is always too busy to do so safely. Who has a family of four and feels like I can only responsibly own one car otherwise it might take away from my family’s other needs and wants too much. I aspire to own one of these someday, despite absolutely finding its styling appalling. But what I can live with is this type of performance and the general capability in other aspects outside that performance. For now I am quite happy with my M Lite, a B58 powered 340i. Especially with a Stage 2+ setup that cost me $1500 for parts and software and is producing nearly 500hp to the rear wheels, it’s a total weapon. Even so, someday I hope to cross the threshold though and join it all together in a single ultimate vehicle. Which has always been the M3 (although I would prefer an M2 for the garage and a Toyota beater, I just NEED the S58 after partaking of the “mid-tier” B58.) I can’t stress how much I appreciate the capability and affordability for an average joe making middle of the road wages such as myself.

Or you could get a decent condition 993 911, a good condition 996, an excellent condition 997, blah blah. And money left over.

An ex-owner speaking. A huge sell besides the amazing drive & sound of Inline6's during the high point of this model's lifetime (late 90s early 00s) was its exclusivity. Over the last 15-20 years, BMW has taken away the exclusivity. It's like the 911s. They are everywhere. That makes this a no-go despite of whatever greatness in drive it achieves. I'd take a broken-down *Alfa Guilia QV* over this. I won't even talk about the look, because I'm old and stuck in the E46 and before looks.
