i'm surprised you didn't mention his "therapy time" because sometimes before his videos end, he will change the tone all of a sudden and ask us how we're doing. he will actually be silent for a minute and pretend to listen to what the viewer may be saying and then offer some encouragement. i don't know of any other youtuber who does this. either way, great video as usual!

RUclips algorythm needed 10 minutes of video duration. Therapy time was just his way to fill the gap at the end of his videos when they where too short. I find his therapy time funny, always look at them.

The only guy who's pushing RUclips rules to the limit?
What makes Davie so appealing is that his videos are very simple and easy to follow. He uses entry level English which people all around the world can follow, and he speaks slowly too. He also relies heavily on repetition: "slap like now", "omg", "wise words", "checkmate" and so on, which his viewers come to expect and then copy in the comments. Even the camera panning is predictable and repetitious. Likewise, his videos are broken into repeatable segments: SDAIAY, therapy time and bass playing. The functional gestures you mentioned are also predictable and repeatedly used. He always says omg at the end of his videos and now he says "stay funky bros" too.
In my opinion, it is the simplicity and predictability of Davie's videos, along with the fact that they are lightly humorous that makes him so popular, in a world where most people speak varying levels of English, but want to participate in an international phenomenon.
I don't know if this is a public speaking skill but I wanna mention that his main charm is mystery. By not showing his expressions properly, he captures his viewers curiosity and we feel intrigued to know more. He combines it with humour which breaks that tension that "yup he's just like us". I think it's a play on these two qualities that draws us to him.

I find Davie's use of editing is crucial in the delivery of his deadpan humor. Sometimes he basically manifactures speaking skill in post production

One of my favorite things is how he leaves EPICC cliffhangers that are only revealed after he attains a certain number of subscribers. It gives massive motivation for viewers to see him succeed 👏. Big brain moves here! OMG!!!

You mentioned it in the video, but I feel more credit should go to his editing. His deadpan and near-monotone work because the "camera" is the opposite, always jumping around, adding visual and sound effects, and just keeping things lively. It's like how comedy duos often use the "straight man and funny man" routine. Not a perfect example, in this case it's balancing the energy of the video.
And I don't mean to say Davie doesn't have a great personality, but last I checked, he edits his own videos and he found a style that really works for him. To do a Davie impersonation you almost have to copy his editing style too, as seen in this video.
I had to stop the video and leave a comment first. Another awesome analysis David, really glad this hits my front page recommendation again. Your analysis is spot on. Keep up the great work!

So. I originally came here from Jacksepticeye's video and I got hooked. I've been watching a LOT of your videos and I love what I see.
I've also noticed you talk a lot about confidence and its importance in public speaking which brings me to my point.
I've noticed, and many other people have noticed, a very obvious change in YOUR OWN confidence throughout the course of your time on RUclips and it's beautiful to see. Maybe you've noticed, maybe you haven't, but we definitely have.

A step up from this here challenge might be going for some youtubers that dont show their faces, so you cant read all those physical aspects. Going off of tone and timbre and other vocal aspects alone would be a very interesting analysis to have.

Well overall for me, I get it what u mean on how subtle he is that we also want to feel what he's feeling even he's not showing it and that made me compare him to writing a prose or poetry. As what I've learned, he's injecting a feeling but don't show it directly which is same thing when writing. U don't say it directly (that someone is sad, happy, etc.) but just describe why and how it was become a particular emotion. It's like those feelings are there but just lurking beneath. Pointing those out specifically will be left to your own work.
Do you remember the video a bit before and after first minecraft bass video? Thats where he started becoming popular. His emotionless face along with some stuff like face reveal or right shoulder reveal. Thats what made him popular in actuality. Now its just snowball effect in subscribers along with people that are new to him. The comedy and interest is not really there anymore. But Davie is still an awesome guy with epic ideas
Davie has a technique for humor that I don't really see in many: Keeping a straight face. There is a comedy troupe in my country that employs the same technique during their shows. The shows have a very serious, almost professional feel, but the man speaking starts saying joke after joke while keeping a straight face and you can't help but laugh at it. Davie does the same, where he keeps his monotone voice and expression while saying the dumbest things, and that makes you laugh.
*Me, who's barely heard of and never watched Davie504* oo, this should be fun.

Before I watch the video, I think one of the things that makes him popular are his re-occuring themes where he always engages with the audience. Such as by saying "slap like now" or promoting memes.

When you brought up Monty Python you made me think of George Harrison. Which made me think of The Beatles. People now are also very attracted to their personalities. You should react to The Beatles. You don't have to but it just seems like a fun thing. I do have clips of them in interviews after their carreer (not together clearly) and during their career. Brian (their publisher) said that he didn't buy The Beatles because the best tey could give him was "Love me do" he said it was because in that little time where he was with The Beatles they gave him a positve feeling and he thought if they could do that to him they could do that to the world. (Or you could just react to George Harrison)
