Perfect.
Great for vintage gear stage setup. Nobody wants to see a laptop next to DX7 or Juno.
If people pay to see how it was done in 80's, it must look like 80's.
Hi, I have the QX21 and the upgrade brother QX5 that has a more tracks, deep editing features (copy, paste etc). I use the Qx21 to create midi loops that I record on my digital recorder/sampler Zoom R24 and use these loops to compose songs, It's the fastest and easiest way to work with this midi sequencers.
You set the midi channel for each patches and You can record the midi channels separately, in this way You can delete all the data on a specific midi channel but It's not possible to insert or chain only a specific channel. With some keyboard like Yahama MM6 (that I use) It's not possible to assign midi channels to a specific sound patch, in this chase may be useful to add some midi commands at the beginning of the song, with msb, lsb and program change on each channel We use but on the Qx21 It's not possible to manually add these commands.
Nice video thanks You!
Thanks for uploading this, fun to watch.
Just got one of these used and am using it with a kids keyboard and loving it! Very fun to make a lil midi drums loop and then warp with the tempo knob on it 🤖
Really excellent tutorial Sir. Ive owned a QX7 for years. And its pretty similar to the QX21. And ive learnt some tips here.
Great video!
I just found a qx21 on sale and searched for a video on how it is to work with.
Thanks
❤
I'm getting a QX7 soon for a bit of fun, and as far as I know it's very very similar to this. I'm intrigued to try out the process of making songs with two tracks and a two digit display. I know it will be possible, especially listening to this!! I have a QX5 already, so I'm quite familiar with the "Yamaha" sequencer workflow.
They look the same. Do you know the difference between the too?
Yes. I think the QX7 has got a couple more things it can record in (like Polyphonic Aftertouch, which the QX21 didn't have), but apart from that, they're identical as far as I can tell.
Thanks. The QX21 can do Polyphonic but not sure about Aftertouch as I've never tried it-:)
@@Synthesis1979 The QX21 is actually the latter and more advance of them. It can delete a full track of one single midichannel in the downmix. QX7 cannot. They are identical in hardware spec, only firmware differs. I've got an XA641 firmware on my QX21. Regarding polyphonic aftertouch, it is not really useful on a sequencer with only 6000 velocitynotes memory.
only here bc Richard D. James called it almost impossible to use lol
HAHA SAME 😭
Perfect timing! I bought one of these at a pawn shop for $13 a couple of months back. Took it out this weekend but realized that it can be VERY limited. It still is very limited but that copy trick opens it up to "useable" status. Maybe you can answer the "how do I save/backup my sequences" question I've been asking.
There are two methods. You can save on Tape using a tape recorder and you'll need a 7 pin din cable to connect the too. I use bulk data dump via midi and save my songs on midiox. www.midiox.com/
@@Synthesis1979I uae Syx-Lib, an Android App, on my mobile phone. I connect to the sequencer with a cheap USB-C to MIDI cable. I put Syx-Lib in Dump mode, click on transmit tracks on the QX and the selected tracks get recorded to a file. To reload them on the QX, put QX in receiving mode and tap on the fike on the phone. It's just wonderful. (Note: I used to use a QX21 but I upgraded to a QX5. A super machine.)
Can this be used a s a sequencer for the su 200?
If it has midi, yes.
Hi. Can we record in multi channel mode?
Never tried it.
Can I use my dx7 to send midi to the qx21?
Yes of course. Remember though the DX7 is not multi timbral. One sound only!
@@Synthesis1979 ok but does it switch channels?
@@Synthesis1979 can I program on channel 1 then program on channel 3? When I have my ensoniq hooked up?
Or do I have to switch to the ensoniq?
Can you not do several modules? Like a tx7, tx81z?
well, love watching this, but that sequencer has no sense nowadays, every serious midi soft sequencer or hardware based is far superior, it really slows down your workflow for chaining tricks and I don't think will inspire musically in a different way...
I can undestand the use of bulkies analogue tape recorders with no autolocators like ampex mm1000 because they have really different analogue sound compared to digital audio, but a midi sequencer simply puts midi data out, they doesn't sound differently from a modern midi sequencer, so an atari ste 1040 with cubase or notator or midi tracks st or other is just far superior from this.
It's about nostalgia for me and note pad sequencing, I've stoped doing serious work on pc's recently as i have done so much over the years that it's nice to just quickly bang out rifts on 2 tracks - I have this thing hooked up to my DX9.
Its actually the OPPOSITE today. Too much choice and tech. But little substance. The very fact that the mid 80s tech was so basic. Allowed for you to get on with the business of laying some killer tracks. Today you can get lost in all the tech and end up forgetting what you wanted to do.
@@fender1000100 Completly agree with that ! Using 80's technologies forces to do the best because there is no choice, otherwise there is nothing happening musically with this type of gear !
Recording with a hardware sequencer nowadays is the dawless way! And we love it that way!
God Damn... why not just manually press play/mute on the drum machine or synth while recording to the source???? I don't even have the patience to watch HIM do all this!
