Good advice, I have another one, especially for us tourists, don‘t stop for fotoshooting at dangerous spots, just because there is a nice motive to take. Drive a little further, park safely and walk back. When you drive a slow vehicle, like a campervan, use every opportunity to let faster vehicles pass and last but not least, as a tourist, try to avoid driving in the dark😜
Good video and pleased to see some practical advice for visitors. If you get a chance: please mention "when you reach a passing zone - don't speed up - let the traffic behind you get by. Also re speed - many campervans travel around 80 to 90 kph in a 100kph area. That's ok, probably enjoying the scenery, etc But many kiwis are NOT on holiday, they have a timetable to keep to and expect to be able to drive at 100 kph. So, if you cannot (or don't want to) travel at the open road speed, please use your mirrors and pull over regularly to let others pass. Thank you.
We're used to driving on the left and one lane bridges, there's one around the corner from me. So many similarities to Ireland it'll be a lot less daunting than driving in the U.S.
Some handy info there. Very like Irish roads. Same speed limits, windy roads, similar rules of the road. Sooo many slow tourist drivers here too but at least you have passing lanes now and then. Sounds like the cops there are around a lot more. Well used to sheep too. Can't wait to eventually go!
Sounds daunting...but, I love a challenge. I'm going to Auckland, when this virus lets up, to do the Skywalk. I'm looking forward to hiring a local to drive me around the countryside lol. I'd hate to piss people off with my gawking at the countryside. Thanks a lot for this video.
i feel as a british driver coming to new Zealand for a holiday. we seem to have the same design in terms of signage. only big difference is we have mph not kph
Nice video. I've just returned to the UK after 5 weeks in NZ, one thing I did notice was that when I was on H1 and H3 people would sit right up my arse on the single lane sections if I was doing between 95 and 100kph but as soon as there was a passing lane they'd drop right back and not overtake, this despite me often easing off so they wouldn't have to speed to pass. I don't know if this is normal for NZ drivers or I was just having one of those days. Overall I'd rather drive in New Zealand any day than in London
Just arrived in NZ from the UK. I drove from Auckland to Wellington recently and stuck to the speed limit - the number of locals speeding and tailgating was staggering.
You said not to speed in passing lanes? yet you say we can do 100km/hour on 80-90km/hour. I confuse. I'm guessing you meant for those road that already doing 100 km/hour - still within road speed. see minute 6:08
I do enjoy travelling here, due to the size of the country, most places are achieveable to drive to, ie- whichever island you live on, you can drive around that island in a few days. I live in the south island so most of my vids are filmed there... but late this year or early next year... north island roadtrip!
Stick to the speed limits. I’ve seen too many crash sites where it looks like someone has been speeding and flown off a sudden turn or hit a patch of black ice and spun out
Essentially driving in NZ is gladiatorial. The official road code is a 400 page tome which weighs in at 800 grammes. It's written in hundreds of short bullet point word sequences, and illustrated with hundreds of computer generated diagramatic illustrations which bear little resemblance to the real world. My suggestion is that visitors should travel by bus or coach.
Y2Jay Does Asia well, as soon as possible. Either magic happens and I can afford or New Zealanders wanting civilization come together and sponsor my trip.
If you have the right of way, you don't have to give way unless there is already cars on the bridge going in opposite direction. If there is 1 car opposing you (a) and another one waiting (b) ...and (b) decides to follow (a)... technically you have the right of way (and car B is being inconsiderate), but if you enter the bridge there would obviously be an accident, so don't enter until the other cars are actually giving way to you like they are supposed to. So to answer your question, assuming you have the right of way, you only have to let through the cars that are already on the bridge, how ever many cars that is. When traffic on the other side sees you waiting, they should be giving way to you once the car(s) on the bridge are cleared.
@@Y2J Thanks! Also, are you allowed to turn left on a red light? Here in the US, most (all?) places allow right turn on a red light, wondering if there is a corresponding law in NZ? (Coming in early Feb 2019, so trying to study this driving!)
That’s is such a good video!! I need to post this on my Twitter!!!

Going to have my first campervan drive next week! You are such great help!! Greetings from Singapore!!

This is such a great video, full of really clear information, advice, and examples.
RCR described NZ as the planet's bonus track. I hope to visit some day and I promise to be on my best behavior ^_^
It is about the same here in Montana. However every time I have to stop for cattle the ones in front of my car start mateing.
Planning on driving in NZ later this year... Driving in NZ seems very similar to driving in rural Ireland - so I'm good! :)
Glad I could help
Great video. It should also have a reminder to be patient when driving behind a slow vehicle - the speed limit is a maximum, not a minimum!
Cool vid....helped me a lot going in the right direction!
Thank you for the helpful video.
Thank you for your video sir.
Helpful thankyou! Alot of the rules are very similar to Australia which I'm glad of! :)
Useful, thanks
Be there in a couple months. You should come to the US and drive the blue ridge parkway.
I live in East Tennessee near the parkway. All the roads are windy with no shoulders

Very close to Canada except on the opposite side of the road 👀 I also know how to drive all weather so I'll be set when I move there 😁😁

I think it's a weird quirk of 4 outa 5 NZ and Aussie drivers mate
Hi from Nelson 👍🏼
Thank u 😊
Just arrived in NZ from the UK. I drove from Auckland to Wellington recently and stuck to the speed limit - the number of locals speeding and tailgating was staggering.
yes I know, it's aweful, pretty low quality of driving here. Slightly better in the south island, but not by much.
Thank you mate

😂 basically the same as Norway, but we have 110kmh as the top now
the AA wants to make 110 the limit in some areas of NZ, but only the "good roads", and there aren't many "good roads".
Very good video
Yes, I'm a tourist
looks like a great place to drive :)

Watching the footage of you driving on the wrong side, excuse me, the left side of the road took some getting used to.
Wrong side of the car too :)
Thanks...
Weird to drive on the left. Great video though. Thanks!
Helo, I'm from Philippines. I wanna learn more about NZ traffic rules.

The way people drive here it should be an 800 page tome. Too easy to get a drivers licence here.
Yes I am looking to come to New Zealand, will driving require a license of sorts? If so, I’m not looking to drive, but rather looking for a driver.
Capitan Bastos having been a PUBG passenger with you, please do not drive. 😂
Coming to NZ when?
Y2Jay Does Asia he will let you know when he’s at the airport.
Y2Jay Does Asia well, as soon as possible. Either magic happens and I can afford or New Zealanders wanting civilization come together and sponsor my trip.
Hissing Thoughts I am an excellent driver, I have know idea what you’re on about
If more than one car going the same direction comes to a one lane bridge, what's the rule for how many cars to let through before your turn?
If you have the right of way, you don't have to give way unless there is already cars on the bridge going in opposite direction. If there is 1 car opposing you (a) and another one waiting (b) ...and (b) decides to follow (a)... technically you have the right of way (and car B is being inconsiderate), but if you enter the bridge there would obviously be an accident, so don't enter until the other cars are actually giving way to you like they are supposed to.

No, there isn't a general rule allowing you to turn left on red lights, that's a no. @@mbvescovo
You may run into stock... literally.
Hey where in New Zealand do you live? I live in richmond
Christchurch
#1:don't, the kiwis shoot lasers avoid open roads at all cost stay inside or the kiwis will find were you live.

Now I'm afraid of driving in NZ... Maybe I shouldn't do it.
Alcohol is a drug btw.
Please God , give me the power of flight so I never have to deal with kiwi drivers again. Amen.
looks like an american dressed as an aussie talking about NZ driving
He even sounds a little American too.
Chur bro
