Patty Duke will always be remembered for her stunning talent onstage and onscreen. She is one of the most talented and highly awarded actors in history, and her widely renowned success began at a shockingly young age.
Patty Duke was born on December 14th, 1946 to parents Frances Margaret and John Patrick Duke. After an incredibly rough childhood, she was eventually taken under the wing by two talent managers. Unfortunately, she soon discovered that they were cruel people who exploited her work. Even so, Patty Duke's talent shone through in spite of these harsh difficulties, and before long, she was a child star.
After appearing in a series of television show episodes and a few plays, Patty Duke finally landed her starring role. She played Helen Keller in the Broadway play The Miracle Worker. It was an incredible success, and when they decided to turn the play into a movie, they asked Patty Duke to retain the role on film. Patty Duke of course said yes, and when she was just 16 years old, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. This meant that, at the time, she was the youngest person in history to receive an Oscar.
Patty Duke went on to win many more accolades, including three Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and her very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She had an impressive filmography in both film and television. Her most iconic role in television was as the twins, Cathy and Patty Lane in her very own television show, The Patty Duke Show. Her most memorable films include Valley of the Dolls and Me, Natalie.
In 1985, Patty Duke was so deeply involved in the film industry that she served as President of the Screen Actors Guild until 1988, where she represented the labor union of actors across the country. She didn't just devote her life to performing, however. She also worked as both an author and a singer, giving her a prolific and multi-faceted career.
Later in life, Patty Duke also became an advocate and spokeswoman for mental health, after dealing with serious personal mental health issues.
While Patty Duke had an impressive career that spanned a total of 65 years, she had a devastating end to her life. She died on March 29th, 2016 at the age of 69. Her son, Sean Astin, announced with a heavy heart that she suffered greatly towards the end of her life. In today's video, we're going to take a look at some fascinating facts about Patty Duke. She played cousins, not sisters. Why don't you people check for mistakes. I always loved her. I am so glad I got to meet her. She was so warm and friendly. She let me hug her and I had my picture taken with her.
She was a beautiful & outrageously talented actor! Her pain & suffering is now over. May her soul RIP❣😇
I grew up watching Patty Duke. Loved her then, love her now. 69 was too young to die. Sorry she had such a rough childhood. Exploited by managers, just like Judy Garland. None of us know what our lives will be like when we get old. God help us!
What's your favorite memory of her, Mary?
Remember growing up watching The Patty Duke Show after school. RIP Patty Duke 🙏
We became good friends when I was her makeup artist on a film in Chicago. Her dog Pappy loved me and she called me to come to her hotel on the weekends because Pappy “didn’t want to poop without me!” Loved her so.❤️🌹I will always remember you, Anna.
Patty Duke & Sally Field were two incredible child actresses who went on to become exceptionally versatile adult stars.
Sally Field was not a child actress. She came upon the scene when she was in her early twenties.
@@efandmk3382 I just saw an interview with Sally Field on a 1989 Donahue show. She said that she was 17 when she got the role of Gidget.
@@wandaworld20 Born November 6, 1946, began her professional career on television, starring in the comedy Gidget (1965-1966).
I love both Patty Duke and Sally Field.
@@efandmk3382 no Sally Field was a teenager when she did Giget and The Flying Nun.
Patty didn't play twin sisters, she played identical cousins. I Ioved that show & Patty Duke.
True
So hold that show is Liv and Maddie the show Dove Cameron played twins sisters? What would been interesting is if the two cousins were founded out to be identical twins sisters and that were the grandma an aunt of Liv and Maddie.
Such a great talent and good person in spite of the abuse she suffered. She was one of my favorite’s.
When Patty Passed It Felt Like I Lost A Family Member Loved This Great Lady
Patty Duke also did a movie "Call Me Anna". It was about her life story. When I watched that movie I was shocked about similar things that had happened in both of our lives. From the time I was 17 I was treated for mental illness and was given medication 💊 to help. But the medicine did not help. I also went to counseling. After I watched the movie "Call Me Anna", I asked my counselor if I might be bipolar. She researched it some and later told me it might be possible. An appointment with a psychiatrist revealed it could be true. Medication for bipolar disorder was prescribed and they worked to level my mood swings. That movie and Patty Duke's honesty changed my life. Jeannie Baker.
I too have bipolar disorder.
Wow how wonderful you managed to watch Call me Anna and the story fell into place for you. you were in the right place at the right time. I loved Patty Dukes stuff and liked her a lot and was distressed to learn of years of struggling. I saw a clip of her in, i think, 1968 and she was receiving an award and she evidently was having an episode, poor thing. So I was thrilled when I saw an interview wherein she was diagnosed around 1987 and her life changed for the better. May she rest in peace.
Actually it was a book of her memoirs first. I read it and couldn’t put it down. I didn’t know was filmed. I would like to see it some time.
@@jamesloftus2079 The movie is great. There's one scene where she's sitting on the bathroom floor, crying. She has her medication with her and she's trying to think which one would help her get calmer. Been there done that! There's a scene where she gets upset and starts throwing things. I got that T shirt too. Now I usually go to my room and isolate until I settle down. I know isolating is usually not good, but this works for me.
@Soupy Anderson I am sure she would be thrilled to know that she helped even one person. god bless you i sincerely hope you are enjoying life now.... apart from the lockdown i mean. Bravo to you. All the best.
She was fabulous.
I grew up in the time frame of Patty Duke. I loved her then and i love her now. I too suffer greatly from mental illness and l am so proud that Patty put a face on it. She truly is an icon.
Being able to work like she did with the challenges that she faced is remarkable. Very underrated actress Looking at her difficulties. Rest in peace Patty Duke! Joy and happiness was her gift to the world And she is greatly missed.

Such a wonderful talent and an inspiring example of how difficulties in life doesn't need to prevent you from achieving success and helping others. RIP Patty and thank you for all the wonderful hours of entertainment.
My heart goes out to her, I hope she found peace. She was an outstanding actress and a kind soul.
I loved her. She was treated cruelly.
I met her and called her Anna. I told her my Grandmother's name was Marie. She was VERY nice and amusing and amazing, of course. I was shocked when she passed away because she seemed like she was fine when we met. RIP Anna Marie. THANKS for all the GREAT ENTERTAINMENT! 🙏✌️❤️🕊️😉🤺🎶☕

I have always been a big fan of Patty Duke. I’m partial to the name Patty, because that was my sister‘s name as well. I am a blind person, and I thought that she really portrayed Helen Keller in the miracle worker so very well! Now she can rest in peace, and she will be sorely missed!
Her sons really had great things to say about her, & they inherited her acting talent & love for people.
I think her terrific sons had a lot to do with John Astin, their father. He went through hell with Miss Duke and has never said a negative thing about her. He knew she was ill.
She was a wonderful person. I loved everything she did. Patty Duke was a great actress. RIP ❤🙏
I always thought she was a great actress and liked her, now I know a bit more about her that I didn’t realize. I hope she RIP

A very good lady, who worked for good causes. She left us way too soon and is surely missed
I worked on the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon set in NY when Patty Duke hosted with her Husband John Astin. Patty was always very sweet to me....... It was a highlight in my life to be able to be side by side with her. The last year she hosted and told me she would not be back next year, I said, "I will never see you again", she responded, "Never say Never".........

No. Thanks Very. Hi. Nice
I did not know that Patti had had so many problems toward her life's end. She was talented in so many areas, and courageous as well to share with others who had the same diagnosis. I enjoyed reading her autobiography a while back.
Claire M.
Patty didn't play twin sisters on The Patty Duke Show.
She played identical cousins.
Once again fact verse gets something wrong. It is even in the theme song. Identical cousins. Lol
I was just going to comment on that. Glad you picked up on it.
"One pair of matching bookends. Different as night and day." I didn't realize how true that was.
Great catch Debra!
...Debra,...that is right they were cousins not sisters, loved the Patty Duke Show.
I just loved Patty Duke (Anna). She was so talented. RIP
In The Patty Duke Show, she played identical COUSINS, not sisters. 🙄 You really should do more thorough research.

Patty Duke was amazing as a very young actress. That role of young Helen Keller was hers alone. That Oscar was So deserved! I loved her in everything. Even Valley Of The Dolls. God bless her.✨ She passed rather early.
I adore Patty Duke, her acting abilities are beyond compersion. My favorite movies by here 1993 Matter Of Justice and 1995 When The Vows Break.

The LATE/GREAT/LEGENDARY Patty Duke, was a BADASS actress.
EVERY role she played was MASTERFUL!! With all of her personal struggles, she remained a brilliant actress from childhood through her entire life as an adult.
She raised two AMAZING/TALENTED sons.
What a magnificent actress! The best ever!!
I loved her in Lifetime movies
Yes, she was awesome in the Lifetime movies! Talented great actress! I loved her In everything! I can remember hearing that she suffered from manic depression ( back when they called it that) now called Bi polar. She was a beautiful woman & a wonderful actress 💗💓
Me, too. I watched them all, since many were true crime. I always felt a kinship toward her - she looked like several of my German-Irish relatives. RIP, Anna.
My favorite movie is "A Matter of Justice" with Martin Sheen. That is my ABSOLUTE favorite movie with Patty. I cried when I heard she had passed, & I'm NOT ashamed to admit this.
It's amazing just how these beautiful people can cover up so much of their personal health issues. I loved her performance
I love Patty awesome Actress and a beautiful lady 🌹❤️
I loved watching her.
Great actress. Nothing else needs to be said about her.
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!
Party Duke was a great supporter of mental health and was a survivor of abuse and her own Bipolar Dissorder. I look up to this brilliant person.
I watched her a lot on TV when I was very young. I think I missed her early shows later on. I think I even felt an attachment to her as a small child when I watched her shows.
My mother loved this show. She and patty Duke were about the same age.
I watched The Patty Duke show sometimes, but Sean...he was AWESOME in "Rings" and in a series of "24"! Sad how she went, but no parent can wish for more than to have their family by their side as they die.
"me Natalie" was the first film I watched. And still I love her.
God preserves her soul.
I liked her
Even Lucille Ball believed Sean was Desi Jr.'s son.
Rest In Peace patty duke
I was sorry to hear that she had "issues" that caused problems in her personal life. She, certainly, wouldn’t win any awards for being a great mother, but she was a terrific actress. And, she did something right to raise such good sons. The people who took her under their wings, as a child actress, weren't good parents, either. Sean forgave her for her flaws as his mother, which is a great thing for him to have done. And, the confusion about his "father" actually gave him great fathers! She's at peace now, and fondly remembered by her fans.
such a very sad life. i always enjoyed her show as a teen. poor Anna such a sad sad life again
What's your favorite memory of her, Sharon?
she seemed to have a kindness about her. the patty duke show was a must each week❤️❤️❤️

She was a great actor .i loved Hel
If you look way back to old toy commercials from the 50's, you will see her as a small child in the commercials.
Loved Patty Duke. I’ve seen the Miracle Worker so many times. That dining room scene. Makes me so sad that she suffered. Sepsis -- Oh My God, no one should suffer like that.
We're happy to know that you love Patty Duke. May she find peace 💗
I used to watch Pattie Duke on Nick at Night with my mom. I miss those days.
I loved her tv show. She was sweet through there career. I couldn’t believe how very old she ended up looking and that she died when she did.
We're a big fan too! Thanks for sharing. May Patty find peace 🙏
I was aware of Ms. Duke's struggles with bipolar disorder. But find it, also, very heart breaking to discover that she was grossly taken unfair advantage of and terribly exploited.
I feel that she was a very gifted and talented actress and singer.
So shameful about the awful information concerning all the suffering and unfair challenges that she faced in life. But it's wonderful to know that she still wanted to help others and went on to become President of the Screen Actors Guild and a mental health advocate.
From all that I've learned about Patty Duke or more correctly, Anna is that she was a very good individual. A great mom and most gracious and unselfish person.
Patty Duke was a "stunning talent" both as a child actor and as an adult actor. Not too many actors can make the transition from child to adult actor. 👍 😉
She was amazing...
Pattie was a victim of bi-polar because as a child she was abused on by both mother and father, and had to play the middle pawn which creates bi=polar syndrome. It is created not born! May she now find the peace in heaven that she was denied on earth. RIP Anna Marie.
At least she had children that were close with her and were there with her when she died.
you sure its not born ??? cuz based on what you stated wuddnt that make a WHOLE lottta folks bi-polar ???
Can you explain what your research was to come up that information on bipolar conclusion? Thank you
Later in her life .To me she was a fantastic actor
.
She was! What's your favorite memory of her, Candy?
She was brilliant in the miracle worker.
It wasn't "just advances" I saw Anna "Patty Duke" Aston,on a talk show years ago...those monsters did violate her!.
I "idolized" her when I was very little
She was one of the most gifted actresses on the planet.
She was a beautiful lady❤
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
I was a teen when Patty played one. I loved her show and everything I' saw her in. I didn't know she was bi-polar and I don't remember hearing she had died.
Such talent! ❤
