  • Patty Duke was an actress that first rose to fame thanks to her memorable portrayal of the character Helen Keller in the Broadway play, The Miracle Worker. Soon after the success of the play, The Miracle Worker was adapted into a 1963 Hollywood film that saw Patty reprise her role. Patty’s work on the film led to her winning an Academy Award at the age of only 16. Despite the immense success that Patty found at an early age, she was never truly happy for much of her life.

Patty was born to parents that didn’t know what to do with her. At the age of 8, they gave custody of Patty to two talent managers by the names of John and Ethel Ross. John and Ethel were the people responsible for getting Patty into acting, but they also abused her and caused her much childhood trauma. Patty was able to get away from them in her adult years, but she was never able to escape the many demons that plagued her as a result of their abuse.
Throughout her lifetime, Patty was married to several people. Perhaps the most notable of these marriages was the one she shared with television actor John Astin. It was with John that Patty raised her first son, Sean Astin, although Patty’s undiagnosed bipolar disorder caused numerous problems during his childhood. Patty Duke did NOT play identical twins on the Patty Duke Show - she played "Identical Cousins"! I watched this show faithfully when I was a little boy. Patty was my 1st TV crush. I never missed an episode! I was smitten. Heck, I was in LOVE! And I was only 5! :)

I never heard that, if Ginger was intended it would have been the Mother, not exactly the starring role, she was born in 1911, putting her over 50 when the show came out. I think you are confused, both Patty, & Sally Field were the best teen female actors of the Boomer generation, both had TV Shows.

Patty's greatest work is her Mental Health Advocacy. I, too, have a Bipolar Disorder diagnosis and to this day there is so much more work needed to end the stigma and how those with mental illness are treated. We are some of the most intelligent, creative, passionate and loving people there are. I hope to one day be able to advocate for Mental Health reform and for those whose rights are violated because of these diagnoses, including myself. She is my mentor and idol because of her work and her openness about her illness. It's only when we talk about it that we have any chance of ending the stigma. On a side note: A few years ago I was gifted the most amazing gift. One of those things you always dream of but "know" you won't ever get it. I did. I received a certified 8x10 Patty Duke autograph for my birthday. One of my greatest treasures. Thank you for sharing.

Her acting as Helen Keller was ...(in my humble opinion)...the greatest and most memorable performance on screen that has ever been achieved. The scene where she fought eating prperly in the dining room flashes in my mind whenever I struggle with a strong willed grandchild who is heading in the wrong direction behaviorly and wants to physically prove they can not be subdued into proper behavior...I remember how tough Anne Sullivan had to be that recollection helps me stay tough. Good will win, if you don't give an inch to bad....Not an inch.

Her portrayal of Helen Keller was Amazing, as was her role as her teacher, Annie Sullivan. Anna (Patty) played both parts brilliantly. She was great in
"The Patty Duke Show" too. She played each cousin in such a different way as they were complete opposites, but looked identical ! I loved her in "Valley Of The Dolls" which was the vehicle that would take her from child star, to an adult actress. Her life was taken much too soon and at a very young age. I was lucky enough to work with her at the Jerry Lewis telethons when her and John Astin hosted the New York legs at the wnew studios in Manhattan, she was always so nice and very kind to me. I read her book back in the early 90s. She was very candid about her mental struggles and even admitted to being abusive to her children and husband. Didn't try to justify her behavior but by telling her story, a lot of people saw themselves in it and were able to seek help like she did. At the time the book came out, bi polar disorder was virtually unknown and Patty was an outspoken advocate for treatment of mental health issues. She was an extraordinary person and her sons are as well. John Astin was an amazingly calming and stable influence on her and their sons through it all.

Patty Duke, God rest her soul, was not only beautiful but hean amazing actress. I've heard her tell the story of her years growing up but I don't remember it anymore since it was years ago. Thank you for sharing the video. I have a niece around 40 that has similar problems. My heart breaks for the children. The Bible tells us to forgive one another. I know there is another verse but I can't remember exactly how it goes. I understand how it would be hard to forgive their mother after the horrific abuse. Someday I pray 🙏 that because of many illnesses that it would be easier to forgive. God has blessed her with such talent that very few has. Sally Field is another one. When you go back to the 40s Bette Davis,Katharine Hepburn,Audrey Hepburn, are a few from that era that I love. Hope you feel the same.

I had such a crush on Patty Duke when I was a kid. They used to air two back to back reruns every week day and I would rush home from school to watch them. I can still sing the entire theme song. "Meet Cathy who's lived most everywhere. From Zanzibar to Barclay Square, but Patty's only seen the sights a girl can see from Brooklyn Heights, what a crazy pair!..." About two years ago (at age 62) I caught a rerun and I said to myself "Oh my God! This show is terrible! I liked this?" It wasn't the show. I was in love with Patty Duke.

Complicatons and human frailty. So sad on such a public figure. She gave us so many years of entertainment. I hope she was good to herself as well. To the public's eye she was sweet and lovely, and she's at a much deserved rest in eternity.

She did not play identical twins on the Patty Duke Show, she played identical cousins living under the same roof who were total opposites. Supposedly they were identical cousins because their fathers are identical twin brothers (William Schallert also in a dual role.) Patty Duke's last role before she died was again a dual role on an episode of "Liv and Maddie" on Disney Channel, a series inspired by The Patty Duke Show in that star Dove Cameron played both title characters, who were identical twins. Patty Duke guest starred as their identical twin Grandma/Great Aunt. Also, her son Makenzie Astin was also an actor, most notably as Andy in the later seasons of "The Facts of Life" and the title character in the 90's Disney movie "Iron Will."

I believe that everyone has dealt with some trauma in his or her life experiences. I had to take Child Care classes in Psychology for Child Care. I learned so much about the human mind. The brain 🧠 holds so much information, from the time we are growing inside our mother womb. Dr Freud the famous Psychiatrist studies were analyze into the differenr stages than translated , to bring out the behaviors in children throughout early developements, it can be corrected if taught early....sometimes using hypnosis. Our bodies are truly amazing. Everyone needs to take Psychology.

Patty Duke was the first time I ever heard of bipolar and without knowing it I married one. Now I have a friend who has it. She is in total denial and refuses to take meds. I have to distance myself from her especially when she is in a manic state. Sad sad sad

Patty Duke calling Bipolar Disorder by the old name, Manic Depression was very courageous. She's telling it like it is in my opinion. The new name is a prettier name, but the disease is just as ugly. Manic Depression is an ugly disorder, and Patty was such a courageous lady.

What else is new! The caregivers if true chased money a d sacrifice the young girl. The parents were also chasing money and fame. Why else would people want to control another human.
No wonder she suffered. This is absolutely disgusting and the world allowed this.
Bless her soul! Even though she is now long gone. Thank God she found the heart to forgive those that hurt her!
She was an amazing actress and I absolutely loved watching her shows! ❤️🙏
