To be honest, I feel like “the natural hair journey” era was truly meant to be here to show us black women and girls that it’s ok to be ourselves whether natural, relaxed, locked, weave, wig, just... to be authentic on who we are as a culture and to accept and embrace our essence. I love us black women no matter the shade .

This And i loved my a journey ! It definitely is needed! I feel like the for me yu get it was stigmatized so we all rushed to perms so my natural journey was a way for me to embrace my hair.. learn about it..learning my texture..trying and appreciating the natural hair process. It’s great for some and best for all. Did i appreciate it! Honestly perms never damaged my hair! I’ve been natural for like 8 years now I’m going back though...i miss perms and your can still have and maintain heathy growing hair with perms.

This!! I first went natural in 2008 after I applied a relaxer and left it on too long. I was 22 and with very little education around my natural hair. The journey to learn, grow, and accept every stage of my hair has been amazing. I wore my natural hair out for 5 years with braids, twists, weaves, afros, then loc'd it up for 5.5 years! I'm currently loc'd again after combing out my first set, and am so happy to feel like I've made the journey through fully loving and accepting myself, no matter what my hair looks likes! I'm grateful for the early days of the natural hair movement for sure!

You bring up a good point though. Ive been natural 13 years now (just realized it was actually "a thing" on youtube in 2021 after terrible heat damage had me researching...i myself was natural and too busy to do anything but a ponytail and maybe a few kiddie braids on wash day but how natural is natural when most put on fake hair in the form of wigs and weaves anyway. I know its going to annoy some naturals but really think about it: how natural are we when we still cover it up with fake hair🤔...just an observation, we all do what we want but shouldnt be too hard onbothers who go chemical route. The info out here on youtube is amazing and empowering to do whatever we want in a healthy way and that is probably the biggest takeaway

GIRL! This is EXACTLY my natural hair journey & I’m so over it. I’m also a sleek kind of girl so having to go through the struggles of simply finding the right edge control was enough. Natural products are not cheap & buying so many products just to find out that it doesn’t even work, very much so frustrating. I couldn’t do a sleek, cute, quick style if I wanted to hop up & go somewhere with my natural hair. Being natural takes dedication & patience & unfortunately, I’m not about that life so I’m going back relaxed ASAP.

This is what I love about relaxed hair....you can literally moisturize every single day without it reverting into an afro!! We all know water and products that contain water are what truly moisturize hair and if you're a natural who likes wearing your hair straight, it is nearly impossible to moisturize with the ultimate moisturizer - water...on a daily basis. I just relaxed my 18 inches of virgin hair and I couldn't be more happy!!!!! I get to spritz it with water and wear hella cute braid outs everyday. Wash, dry and style takes about 45 mins. Detangling......what is that??? I should have done it sooner, because I used to lose a lot of hair on wash day because of the tension caused by trying to detangle 4c hair. Even being hella gentle and using my RevAir, I couldnt get around the fallout. Now......the amount of shed on wash day is next to none!

Whatever makes your life easier and allows you to look your best. I moisturize my natural hair when it’s flat ironed w/o reversion. You just have to use a small amount at a time and rub it in your hands first before putting it on your ends and mid length. I use Oyin Hair Dew. Enjoy your relaxer!

Honestly I don’t remember ever thinking about hair this much growing up. I had friends who were natural and friends who permed. My aunt loved natural hair and would help me perm mine. Like I never felt like one was right or wrong growing up. Now I feel like I hate myself and what will I be teaching my daughter if I perm my hair. My mom had hair down her back permed and I always had cornrows in and I never felt like my mom wasn’t teaching me self love growing up. It’s ridiculous how we claim we want black women to love themselves but the hair police only want it their way. I have had more problems with my hair trying or be natural, than I have perming it. Because I’m not in it for the right reasons and I honestly loved my perm hair. I’m going to perm my hair and not feel one bit of bad about it!

I did a big chop in 2018. Loved it. Then I got real depressed, stopped doing my hair, and knew that I could do better styles. So may of 2019 I relaxed my hair. And after a couple months of growing it past my shoulders, I realized I didn’t like it at all. And i knew I missed my natural hair. So I started transitioning in November, it grew in the middle of my ear(length) and I cut my hair off and I realized I enjoy taking all that time doing my hair because I’m at a happy state in life and my natural hair is my life. I’m glad you picked your way. It looks amazing!! No one should ever stay natural because they feel like there would be criticism from the natural hair police. I’m happy for you!!!

I'm so glad to see more black women celebrating and taking care of their "natural" hair! MEeaning the hair that grows out of our scalps! Whether its relaxed (which I prefer myself) or unrelaxed...I still call it "natural" hair because that is the way I distinguish hair that isn't a weave. I relaxed my hair after 4 years of wearing it in it's kinky state. I loved my hair but it was way too time consuming, plus I missed that relaxed flow! I look forward now to finding as many black women as possible to follow that take care of their own hair and look and feel beautiful without wearing wigs and weaves.

I LOVE your explanation because it's our REAL HAIR. It's coming out of our SCALPS so it's our "NATURAL" hair. I hate how unprocessed hair is seen as better in the Black community and the world community. I just relaxed my hair two weeks ago and id been natural for 10 years and I've been growing it since 2019. So I did it, cut off my split ends and dyed it Black yesterday and it looks so healthy. I LOVE doing my hair now and it's so soft and fluffy and I've been Doing AMAZING on moisturizing it and learning new products for my hair.

I don't know how to communicate that I want to relax my hair because I want to and not because of any internalized hatred of my blackness. And maybe that's my own fear of why I want to relax my hair, but for me, it's really just so much work-especially the longer it gets. So thanks for sharing your thoughts as it's helpful to hear about other women's experiences.

You don’t owe anyone an explanation for what you choose to do with your hair, and I don’t know about you, but for me it’s about time, expense, and convenience; I have spent more money trying to find the right natural curl products and more time trying to find the right styling and maintenance routine than I ever did with a relaxer. I don’t like the end result, and I’m just over the whole thing. People who feel more strongly about my hair than I do are welcome to start paying for my product and doing it for me 😂

I ended my two year natural hair journey today. I woke up this morning and was like “I’m so over this shit”. I got up, went to CVS, and with the relaxer, moisturizer and coconut conditioner, I spent a whole $26. I have a couple of reasons why I ended the journey. The first being the more my hair grew, the curlier it got, therefore making my hair appear to be much shorter than what it was. It was super thick, but simply wouldn’t lay flat. It would push out sideways. The second reason was I was spending SO MUCH MONEY on hair products that just didn’t respond to my natural hair, at all. I have been wearing a headband with my hair pulled back because my edges didn’t respond to a single product I bought. Also, natural hair products are just so expensive. I spent $26 today for everything I needed to care for my relaxed hair, and it will last me a few months. I had purchased a hair custard that somewhat helped my hair that was $40, and would have had to buy it every 6 days. I eventually found some oil products that were cheaper, to help stretch out the custard. The oil that helped my hair helped in the sense that it made my hair easier to comb through when I got done with washing it. The third and biggest reason was how my hair responded when I slept. I could wash/dry/bonnet my hair, but during the night, my hair was splitting itself at the crown. So when I woke up, my top half was completely upwards, leaving my crown completely flat, which started to cause some breakage. When I relaxed my hair, a part of me was kinda nervous. But to my utter surprise, my hair didn’t break or shed, AT ALL. When I dried it, I didn’t see hair flying all over the place, even my husband saw me blow drying, he said THANK YOU for getting your hair back in order. He got tired of seeing my hair in hair nets and head bands all the time.

My hair was relaxed from about 10 years old until I was 37 because I didn’t know any better and it made my hair manageable.
I wouldn’t of dreamed of attempting to look after my natural hair - had no time or interest but knew that the chemicals in the relaxer were bad for my scalp (I have scalp psoriasis).
I’ve never worn wigs or weaves as they didn’t appeal to me.
Then I discovered sisterlocks and they suit my busy, professional lifestyle and desire to be natural.
I think we’ve got to do what’s best for us / unapologetically.

I understand you perfectly. OMG. Thick and coarse my hair is. A day lost on “hair shampoo day!” Detangling 30 mins before shampoo. Single strand knots. I could go on......but I won’t. I relaxed after 7 years natural. The longer it got the more time it took. As I have never in my 59 years ( 60 next month) wore a weave, braids or wigs ( my choice) it became too much for me daily. I always worn my own hair out or in twist waiting a day or two to dry when natural. I made the choice 2 years ago to relax again. I’m happy and I still wear my hair out daily as a relaxed person.
Do I miss my natural hair? Yes! But not the maintenance.

Sukari Sanford I feel you. I’m at least 75% gray. Wait until you get a load of that texture. It is more coarse, wire texture and wants to be noticed. It has a mind of its own. My gray hair is not the hair I had in my 20’s - 40’s or even 10 years ago-hence the relaxer. 😀. I’m still bra strap length and trim to keep it that way or it becomes too much. I rinse every 6 weeks, braid outs and roller set every 3 weeks( I’m a pro at roller sets) I will let it go gray one day. But not today!

Oh wow I feel the same way. I've tried everything and my hair turned into a matted mess after I avoided combing out properly as it just kept breaking. The other day I lost about 1/4 of my hair after I combed out the knots and matted sections with such frustration. I'm thinking of relaxing my hair after it's recovered and will make no apologies for it.

I’ve been natural now since 2003. But I know the struggle I wanted to so many times relax my hair again. But remember, your hair is beautiful either way.

Hi. You look amazing! Love the hair. Too cute! I completely agree with you. After 5 years of being natural, I decided to go back to the relaxer, for ease, shorter time spent on wash days. Styles last longer. I was tired of losing so much hair while detangling my natural hair. I kept my hair in braids most of the time. I'm looking forward to a healthy relaxer journey as I had before going natural. I liked my twist outs on natural hair and love seeing the different natural styles. The great thing is we all have options. Each one of us can wear our hair however we want. It's not about how other people think we should wear our hair. Do what's best for you. We all should feel confident in our decisions, no matter if it's relaxed, natural, braids, wigs, fro, color, dreads, short, long. Do you! 😊

I've been natural for 8 years, although I love my natural curls, it's so expensive and time consuming. I was torn between relaxing my natural hair, but you help me make the decision to relax.

I’m new here but I’ve been natural for 5years now and I’ve been considering relaxing my hair. I have the exact same struggles that you had natural. I’ve tried soooo many products and haven’t found anything that really works for me. And doing my hair takes an act of Congress lol. But you are gorgeous as well as your hair 🥰💜
