The symbol was used in local religions of China (and especially Tibet), as well as more well known ones such as Buddhism (common in China). The Japanese developers simply used it for it’s religious meaning, which made sense considering the game’s setting. I’m sure the item was removed from the American release, but in Japan they don’t care very much about the symbol’s misuse.
