Really loved steve in this interview, no nonsense... "wear your boots, the creases will come back"... seriously, we wear heritage boots, these arent yeezys. creases, wrinkles, scuffs, ect all tell the story of what you are wearing, take care of them and they will patina beautifully
Yess! If thats your thing, ay do you! But i dont think people new to these boots should automatically think they gotta be precious about them. Heritage fashion is rooted in longing for the days where you didn’t have to baby your stuff for it to last. Its not about your boots always being “catwalk ready” lol. If people wanna judge ya creases- let em! Haha
Steve did a pair of shoes for me. The best thing I've ever done. You get what you pay for. I get more compliments on that pair than any other I wear. He is a master craftsman. Great video and I appreciate you bringing in experts to make us smarter. Very cool
I don't know but I really the boots with creases. There's something unique about them because creases aren't the same from person to person, from one boots to another. They show journey and story behind them.
Great tips! I tried the 50/50 water alchohol solution, I applied it with a cloth and in minutes the leather became super soft and I massaged all the creases away, you still see them but they are not as obvious as before. Also put some shoe trees in them.
Steve!! I love that fact that Steve is always on point. Knows his stuff and doesn’t sugarcoat it. That’s precisely the reason no one else will touch my shoes but him!
i've started to accept the creases as part of the patina 😁 But gentlemen, please put in your boot/shoe trees, other than maintaining the shape, that thing's gonna lengthen your boot's longevity. Your feet will sweat more than other parts of our body. Let the leather boots "rest" for a while. Just curious, how do you detect 'loose grain' though?
Love this Nick, a video with my favorite You Tuber, the one the only "Steveroo" from Bedo's...!! Steve is amazing and a tremendously skilled repair artist of leather goods, shoes, bags, jackets, he's amazing and I love to watch him work...! Love your video's too and great to see your corroboration with people like Steve and Trenton & Heath...!
Nick, great topic for you to take on.... Does coating your cedar shoe trees in oil coated cedar trees effectively treat the leather from the inside out?? Does oiling your trees help condition your leather boots?? I believe I'm going to give it a go with my Txture Sanity boots that have the best cowhide leather liners. Every time I wear these boots to my local cobbler he says he's going to buy a pair for himself. He wants to do a sole replacement on these Txtures. Sanity boots and put full leather soles to make them even more delightful visually. Think I'm going to let him use the partial leather soles on these Textures one day if he will add an additional 1/4 " or 1/2“ to the heal height. They will look more amazing with the higher heel and mostly leather soles when he's finished with them. It's a bit early to do any repairs to these perfectly fine high quality boots you told me to get during the so-called pandemic... I've be delighted with them and wear them more than any other boot I've ever owned. These boots will be with me on my feet when I'm planted in the grid.... Wonderful boots that are half priced of their equal quality competitors!!! ’
I had an issue with my Thursday boots that I do not think was very good on their part. Part of the reason they charge pennies for their boots is because the QC isn’t the same as let’s say, red wing, Grant Stone, viberg, etc. I had a pair where the left boot had tons of grain break but the right boot was perfectly fine. All I expect is that both boots have the same grain break, not that there shouldn’t be any in the first place. I spent just a bit more for Grant Stone diesel boots in chromexcel and they are creasing beautifully.
I appreciate that Jose! I've always wondered if anyone would think my videos fit into the 'soothing' category of shoe videos, glad at least one guy does!
Do your best to avoid creases but after a point just embrace them. In my opinion, they make it look all the better and are a part of the charm like the patina.
While RUclips had its downsides, it is great to watch artisans do their work - and Bedo's Leatherworks provides precisely exactly that for zero pounds zero pence zero dollars zero cents.
@@Stridewise thanks I found some on your website. The cheap one I have aren’t stretching the crease on these high toe boxes. I like the collaboration videos you’re doing. Keep up the good work
That was very interesting. I myself don't mind a few creases, but I always use shoe trees. Maybe I have a little OCD, but I just can't imagine not putting shoe trees in when I take my footwear off. I enjoy the videos that you make with other interesting folks.
I don't use shoe trees, as my White's and Nick's boot lasts are not compatible with wood shoe trees. If my boots are not super moist, I push wool socks into them to maintain their shape.
Steve is a true master with the awards to prove it. Though, it's not fancy trophies and plaques that keep people coming back for his work. It's his daily attention he puts into each recrafting he does.
i noticed that with shoe trees, it causes the shoes to bulge at the tips. does that cause permanent bulges? i took my shoe trees out as soon as I see the bulge, if shown when I put in for the first time.
Thank you for the information I have gained watching you on RUclips. I've learnt alot. As someone that has taken up the hobby of reconditioning old boots, (my dr martens are 25 years old) I look be watching and learning from you two.
QUESTION: Can shoe trees have an impact on how leather footwear ages and develops a patina? I have a couple of pairs of boots made from natural, pull-up leather. They have all been developing the same curious patina. They are all beginning to resemble saddle shoes. The upper on the toe area and heal counter are still the original color. But, the leather part of the upper around the lace hardware and my ankle is darkening nicely. If I press on this upper leather from the inside, the leather lightens in color to a tone that resembles the toe area. I have begun to wonder if the pressure from the shoe trees is squeezing out the oil, which is slowing and retarding the leather from developing a patina.
I see three different types of trees on the table. I am using the trees similar to the middle pair. They have the split straight down the middle, and come from Rochester Tree Company, and the round brass knob on the heel part of the tree.
I put saphir on the creases of my red wing blacksmiths and it made the leather roll, now one boot has way more wrinkles than the other and it bugs me what do i do? what did i do wrong
I don’t mind a few wrinkles in the vamp area. The shoes need to flex to be worn. However, I make sure I use shoe/boot trees (immediately after taking my shoes off) and conditioner, regularly, to avoid cracking the leather which is far more destructive to the shoe. I’ve never heard of heating the shoe with an iron, but it seems difficult to avoid lasting damage, so I’ll probably avoid it. Thanks, Steve, for another great video!
Nick, did you notice the arch/heel area on the outsole of your Aldens separating when you put your foot on the steps towards the end of the video? Pretty noticeable gap. Time to hand them over to Steve.
The pair of black prairie blacksmiths I recently got creased normally on one foot, but the other has one massive canyon looking crease that looks off putting. Drives me nuts
So it’s a hit or miss to get leather on the vamp which won’t have loose grain. I’ve even seen Whites with loose grain on the vamp and toe box so buying expensive shoes doesn’t guarantee they’ll cut from the best part of the hide. That sucks.
Why do some people try to get rid of creases..I love it on my boots and especially my jeans to give a complete rugged . I don't like a boot that is too smooth with jeans.
I have everyday boots, and a pair that use when I need to dress up, that way they look crisp. But I don't really care really, if I feel like using the crisp one on a motorcycle day, I just do it.
Moral of the story, if you don't want to spend a little bit of money on and use shoe trees, then don't complain if your boots get a little wrinkled when your not using them.
@@aurthordunne If you have a wide foot you can also cut them on the sides for more comfort. That's what I did and they feel good. My son wears them as is and he has no complaints. Their interchangeable too so you really only need one pair until they wear out.

Out of all the things in the world, this is THE MOST BAFFLING. I love every single crease, fold and sign of wear. The patina and look of a well worn friend is something I covet. I cannot be the only one. Are you the same sort of people that buy cars and don't drive them? Buy a steak to look at it in the fridge and not grill it?
I for one love the look of the rolls and creases in boots, because that's where the patina usually starts to happen. The only time creases look terrible, is with patent leather like you find in a lot of Doc Martens and kidskin leather that the Stacy Adams Madison cap toes are made with. Ya can't really moisturize the leather because of the coatings they use, so they eventually end up just cracking at all the creases.
