This is a very interesting tree, but to me it belongs in a Japanese garden. I don't see any attempt at producing a miniature looking tree, it's more of a styled garden tree. I think it would be unlikely to find a tree like this in nature and if you did it would be the same size as this tree growing in a crack on a mountain. I think this tree must have been growing horizontal for the roots to grow along side the trunk in this manner. Should this tree be trained as a bonsai? Curling the one thick branch around to form a classic bonsai apex just doesn't work for me , it's like an arm holding a wig over it's head. Challenging material still should have the potential to make an outstanding tree, this one just makes me think why? Mr. Daisaku made the best bonsai out of the material he had to work with. Maybe the people who chose the trees don't know the limitations of what can be done at a demonstration or they just don't understand what bonsai is?
trees don t grow in such shapes in the wilderness so how can you say it gives them a natural shape to make them tortuous they aren't sumac rhus typhina trees plants are extremely sensitive they certainly get used to trimming it must be very stressful for them but as they are also very intelligent and proceed in a dissociative way the stimuli from their response to the stimuli they survive and seems to tolerate the mutilation
