When I saw this, the wolf had a very well placed leaf, and he did this pelvic thrust on the line "Look what you're ignoring." Everyone over ten laughed their asses off. Even my Mom. I was so proud of her. Best musical ever, even by Sondheim standred. Of course, Sweeney shall forever hold a place in my heart.
lol in the version at my school, instead of the witch saying "ohhh" when she heard Rapunzel, she would say funny stuff like "that girl has had perfect pitch since the day she was born" ..& the second time she said "i'd take her on the road if i'd ever let her out of these walls" lol it was hilarious!
the story of red riding hood is actually supposed to be a lesson to young beautiful girls against strange men who might be take advantage of them. So the big bad wolf does actually symbolize a rapist.
the full version of this musical is definitely an adult show. not only there is the wolf's song, but at the end the stepsisters cut off their toes to make the golden slipper fit, to name just one other aspect. but the junior version is cut down so that it is appropriate for a young audience.
I love how they use the original fairy tales, not the cleaned up Disney versions, Red Riding Hood has lot of violence, and it's amusing that the wolf is also one of the princes!
I've been watching this musical for years, but now that I've seen Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, I can't help but imagine Johnny Depp singing the wolf's part. *lol*
let me tell you, they are. We just did the abridged, "Junior" version and we still had to wear thoe god awful things. The witch's was about 25 lbs total
That could be it. I mean, Sodheim did his research with the fairytales though and the grimm brothers had symbolism in about every story, I just don't recognize it here
I'm not entirely sure, I guess you would have to read the original fairy tales of Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Jack and the Beanstalk but I am only familiar with Little Red Riding Hood. I guess they could have some symbolism, you can find a hidden meaning in anything.
they were going to make this into a movie but they discontinued the production...it really stinks too this is my favorite musical, one of sondheim's best.
Yes he does. Little Red Riding Hood, and all other Fairy tales, have themes. Little Red riding hood is about Rape and the danger of strangers. In a few versions, the wolf tells her to take off all of her clothes and get into bed with him.
Yes, actually, it is; it's exactly what the Sondheim and Lapine intended for this scene AND exactly what the Brothers Grimm were writing about when they wrote "Little Red Riding Hood": sexual predation.
its because a lot of theatre related guys are considered "gay" or "effiminate" which is pretty much unfounded. The only thing "effiminate" about it, i guess, is stage makeup, and even that's not like regular makeup
No. There's no possible way "Into the Woods" would work as a movie. There are too many funny aspects to it that would only work on stage (like the fake cow for example). Removing them would take away a lot of the humor. "Into the Woods" would never work as a film, and I really hope no one ever tries to make one.
During "Hello, Little Girl"? That's the POINT of the song! The Wolf, in this show, or at least this production, AND in the fairy tale is supposed to be a sexual predator.
back in the day men were not referred to as pigs they were called wolves so the wolf symbolizes a man and the original grimm's fairy tale had hidden meaning. so the wolf was made to look like a man oh and the cape is red, which symbolizes a girl's first period. so the girl is around 13ish and it shows she is at the age to be thinking about sex and that sort of thing. lol idk if anyone else likes to look at the symbolism behind things but i just think this was cool
thats not to say kids can't see it. I mean no language. Like at our school, the last 2 musicals had a lot of swearing. And barring the wolf thing, there really isn't anyhting that would be too inapropriate
You do know that "Little Red Riding Hood" is all about a pubescent girl dealing a sexual predator, don't you? That's kinda the point of that scene in this show as well.
I really really like this, and im terrified that means im gay. I mean ive never fucked a guy, and ive been with my girlfriend for four years now, but still.
That wolf face makeup is pretty amazing.
"Hello Little Girl" creeps me out
LOL love Little Red's What-the-hell face!
this set is sooooo COOL!!! it's amazing!!!
I really like this. I love it. It doesn't mean I'm gay. It means I'm intelligent. Sodheim was a genius.
"GET IT! GET IT! GET! IT!"
lmao. Bernadette Peters is amazing.
That's an amazing wolf mask.
I love how the witch shrieks at the baker, and then gets all distracted when she hears Rapunzel sing...
That's one of the best costumes I've seen in a while :)
Ahhh, Westenberg is the best wolf ever.
lol in the version at my school, instead of the witch saying "ohhh" when she heard Rapunzel, she would say funny stuff like "that girl has had perfect pitch since the day she was born" ..& the second time she said "i'd take her on the road if i'd ever let her out of these walls" lol it was hilarious!
i like what danielle does with her hands its actually a little funny its like she has something on them
you can totally see the the wolves balls
so wrong.....
ha ha i love this play though
the story of red riding hood is actually supposed to be a lesson to young beautiful girls against strange men who might be take advantage of them. So the big bad wolf does actually symbolize a rapist.

Joanna Gleason is so fantastic.
i love that they casted the prince and the wolf as the same person it adds a little under-lying moral to the show
"The end justifies the beans!"
hee hee I love bad puns xD
RAPUNZEL!!! lol love that part
I like the Wolf's mask. It doesn't hinder the actor's ability to perform.
This is great
oh jack's voice is beautiful =]
lol luv this play
they should make a movie into this. obviously with all the songs :o)
that would be KICKASS! as long as they don't destroy it....
i love this play. our high school did a version of it. it was amazing
heck i love this also this was the first muscial i seen when i was in 9th grade and watched and loved my fav song in it is agony
"It justifies the BEAAAAANS!!!!!!!!!" lol. :D ♥ That is the strangest ending to a song I've ever heard, but still, you gotta love it!
"If the end is right, it justifies...the BEANS!"
I love puns.
20?
Wow...she's doing an amazing job at acting younger! I never would have guessed THAT age!
that wolfs hilarious lol
HAHA! "What really matters is the size!...sorry."
No problem, I believe the phrase was first published in his work "The Prince", or at least the concept was.
I love how they use the original fairy tales, not the cleaned up Disney versions, Red Riding Hood has lot of violence, and it's amusing that the wolf is also one of the princes!
In other productions of this musical, you might know that many actors that played the wolf have done different howls.
this has been bugging me..
is there a conveyor belt on the stage, or are they all just that good at fake-moving?
I've been watching this musical for years, but now that I've seen Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, I can't help but imagine Johnny Depp singing the wolf's part. *lol*
Casual prophecy for the movie
that repunzel gag is fucking histerical
yeah I love the wolf
I love that He and Kim Crosby are married in real life ^^
A play on Machiavelli's famous quote "The ends justify the means." :)
the wolf will wear a jacket but not pants... haha
Love Ben Wright's performance. there's something so purposefully corny in how dumb Jack is. LOVE IT!
Why is it that no matter how simple the wolf is, he always scares me?
Shoot me in the head for saying so, but I've always pictured Ashton Kutcher playing Jack.
*braces himself*
*lol*
thanks : )
Yeah, I noticed that too.
Spontaneous pelvic thrust!!!!
thats what i'm saying, its not like we're just wearing it for the hell of it.
quick as change by the narrator to the mysterious old man
let me tell you, they are. We just did the abridged, "Junior" version and we still had to wear thoe god awful things. The witch's was about 25 lbs total
well, thats how it happened in the actual fairytale. And children are still read that. (though I suppose not as much today)
Bernadette Peters sounds like Miss Swan from Mad TV
when you're talking to your MEAL! =)
fun-ny
That could be it. I mean, Sodheim did his research with the fairytales though and the grimm brothers had symbolism in about every story, I just don't recognize it here
burnedette peters is soooooo funny
I'm not entirely sure, I guess you would have to read the original fairy tales of Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Jack and the Beanstalk but I am only familiar with Little Red Riding Hood. I guess they could have some symbolism, you can find a hidden meaning in anything.
It's alright, man.
This play (and some others) have school versions.
That's enough!
It is. O.o You're probably thinking what I'm thinking. =P
they were going to make this into a movie but they discontinued the production...it really stinks too this is my favorite musical, one of sondheim's best.
That wolf is really creepy!
Yes he does.
Little Red Riding Hood, and all other Fairy tales, have themes.
Little Red riding hood is about Rape and the danger of strangers. In a few versions, the wolf tells her to take off all of her clothes and get into bed with him.
Yes, actually, it is; it's exactly what the Sondheim and Lapine intended for this scene AND exactly what the Brothers Grimm were writing about when they wrote "Little Red Riding Hood": sexual predation.
milky white has horns. "only she's can produce milk."
its because a lot of theatre related guys are considered "gay" or "effiminate" which is pretty much unfounded. The only thing "effiminate" about it, i guess, is stage makeup, and even that's not like regular makeup
yea that's the reason.
me too
Random witch! XD
Dude, that wolf needs to get some pants.
dude...jack must have felt so stupid having to sing to a fake cow...lol
Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim's 1976 book, The Uses of Enchantment sorce wika
The original authors weren't called "The Brother's 'Grimm'" for nothing.
No. There's no possible way "Into the Woods" would work as a movie. There are too many funny aspects to it that would only work on stage (like the fake cow for example). Removing them would take away a lot of the humor. "Into the Woods" would never work as a film, and I really hope no one ever tries to make one.
the movie wasn't very good
because he has a willy in plain sight and he's talking to a little girl
he's creepy more than scary LOL
actually, the original little red ridinghood story was entitled "The Rape of Red Ridinghood" I know its creepy.
I wonder if the actors ever got very hot? All the costumes seemed very layered and heavy.
During "Hello, Little Girl"? That's the POINT of the song! The Wolf, in this show, or at least this production, AND in the fairy tale is supposed to be a sexual predator.
back in the day men were not referred to as pigs they were called wolves so the wolf symbolizes a man and the original grimm's fairy tale had hidden meaning. so the wolf was made to look like a man oh and the cape is red, which symbolizes a girl's first period. so the girl is around 13ish and it shows she is at the age to be thinking about sex and that sort of thing. lol idk if anyone else likes to look at the symbolism behind things but i just think this was cool
how old is danielle Ferland, little red, here
Lol. I know. its funny :)
thats not to say kids can't see it. I mean no language. Like at our school, the last 2 musicals had a lot of swearing. And barring the wolf thing, there really isn't anyhting that would be too inapropriate
i know
I would be SO embarrassed if I were a guy wearing that costume... seriously.
You do know that "Little Red Riding Hood" is all about a pubescent girl dealing a sexual predator, don't you? That's kinda the point of that scene in this show as well.
Is the wolf played by Micheal Cerveris?
Who plays Cinderella's mother?
Pfft!
my schools doin this hope i get the wolf
that wolf is very sexual XD
Is the wolf supposed to look like David Bowie from Labyrinth...?
I suppose.
wait, this is supposed to be somewhat of a kids show, right? Its no le miserable. But that wolf and his song, don't seem exactly kid friendly.
Not in the original broadway show.
lmfao!
Well, we couldn't possibly be saying how he's anatomally correct. No offense.
u forgot ur scarf :D
Dude, chill, you don't have to tell me twice. I know that, so calm down and don't act like I'm stupid....
well if you read the origional story that red ridinghood is baised off of, its basically about rape. Creepy huh?
I really really like this, and im terrified that means im gay. I mean ive never fucked a guy, and ive been with my girlfriend for four years now, but still.
