I had a similar experience on Feb. 19 at the NAIA terminal 3. My Apple Watch was taken out of my hand carry on and I did not realize that till I got back to Los Angeles. This incident made me think twice before planning a travel to the Philippines. I have travelled many times to Thailand over the past 5 years, never encountered any issues. But one time to the Philippines, I experienced this theft from my carry on. It took me 5 years to forget the the theft of my iPhone from my luggage in NAIA, in 2018; terminal 1 and now this !! I think in the next 5 years, thousands of dollars of my tourist money will be spent in countries that can control their thieves security personnel at their airport ! NAIA (all its three terminals) are terrible and filled with thieves acting as security personals ! Come on guys, STOP THIS NON SENS!!

As Jennifer mentioned, it's the culture that's existed in NAIA for decades. Cebu is a completely different experience. If there was a will at the top of the government and NAIA, then things could change. The screeners and staff need to go through their own screening process before they start and end their shift. Any additional items in their pockets and on their body at the end of their shift need to be confiscated and explained.

Yes. Like having to bribe the passport officer 2k on your first arrival or you won't get in. And it's not hidden from view or the cameras. Which tells you THEY ARE ALL AT IT. Like I've never had a decent taxi driver in Manila and never a bad one in Cebu. I've spent the last few hours trying to upgrade my pldt home fiber. The Philippines doesn't have a clue about accounts or web pages. And when you contact them they don't even know the products they advertise on their own website. Filipinos at some stage in your life stop and demand better.

If over 100 countries have good airports, no scam, is it possible in the Philippines? VERY POSSIBLE. Those countries did it. THE PHILIPPINES CAN TOO. Our leaders are leaders for a reason. Anybody who's determined to do something, that something is going to happen. It works the same way for a nation's leadership and for mayors of the cities.

Jen, these kind of ridiculous things never stop! I dont know why! If you know the chef from “ Panlasang Pinoy” blog, he recently went home with his family and experience the same thing. A lot of their pasalubongs were stolen! Do you know where the stealings being done mostly, in the airplane compartment where the baggages are! Before bringing it down, they do it inside there where nobody could see! I think every airplane should have a camera there because these people will never stop doing it! Just a puncture of the luggage zipper with a ballpen can open any luggage! It is so frustating how our people can do these things, Filipinos claiming to be the most hospitable people and yet corrupt in so many ways! Shame 😢

Thank you, Jennifer. I did have a bad experience last year when we were checking in PAL counter. Before you check in, they inspect your bags/boxes, and the guy told me, "Sir, hindi ko na bubuksan ang boxes nyo bahala na kayo sa amin. I just ignored the guy 'cause I want them to do what they have to do. But sadly, they approach my wife, the same thing "Ma'am bahala na kayo sa amin hindi na namin bubuksan ang mga luggage nyo." Of course my wife said to me,"Just give them your Philippine peso. " I was saving that Phil pesos for my trip this month (March 2023). Let's be firm and not to give anything to these scalwags.

2016, I will never forget. Someone helped to push my cart outside the airport. I don't have any cash in my wallet so I borrowed 50 pesos from my nephew and gave it to one of the guys that helped pushed the trolley. He refused, he won't accept it - he wanted dollars! He left and he said "Abuloy nyo na lang yan sa lamayan" I couldn't believe it. First of all, nobody needs to get a tip at the airport. I didn't asked any of them to help me with my baggage, they just came to me and said that they would like to help me, Ok fine, but that was unexpected. I went home 3 times more after that and every time someone offers to help me at the airport, I just say no.

Hi Jennifer, can you please raise the concern about the last screening in NAIA terminal 2 just before boarding. A lot of people are complaining that even after going to the restroom you need to line up again and get screened. I got so mad that they even wanted a crippled or disable passenger to stand up on that small podium so they could check his body and they’re not even helping the guy to stand or walk. I told those people that if that guy fell and injured they will be responsible but they just watch him struggling.

Hi Terri love your vlogs & wanted to add' not only is the airport personnel stealing from tourists, but they are also disrespectful to your own people also. For filipinos leaving the country for the first time they are treated terribly & disrespected by immigration also even though there paperwork is in order. They are not interviewed by immigration they are interrogated ' just for wanting to go overseas on a holiday. They need to make the screening process much more simple & treat there own people with more respect. I understand they have a job to do but most of the time they are just on a power trip. Let your citizens have a holiday overseas & stop making it so difficult. They are giving your country a bad name & it's about time the government did something about it.

Give you one better, I was on a domestic flight from Gensan to Manila. On arrival to Manila, you arrive at a domestic terminal, and are taken by a shuttle bus to the international departure terminal. Like most foreigners we purchased our duty free items at the first terminal and declared the unopen items with receipts at the second terminal only to find out that for security reasons our items would be confiscated. Mind you the locals know about this and wait till they are at their departing terminal before making purchases. Myself along with some Brit’s and Aussie got caught up and had all of our purchases taken. There were 3-4 large dustbins filled with all sorts of items taken from others. As one traveler said, State sponsored stealing.

It is a BIG POSSIBILITY that higher officials are aware and connected.
People can not but think that this is already a syndicate inside NAIA or maybe ALL Phil AIRPORTS ( or maybe even ALL PORTS where tourist goes, like ferry terminals) . NOT ONLY OUTGOING PASSENGERS GETS ROBBED, BUT ALSO INCOMING PASSENGERS. A lot of cases also have been reported, posted regarding missing items missing/taken from their bagages/boxes BUT no action/ thorough investigation done. Am not sure if they have already installed CCTVs in all AIRPORTS areas (from picking up bagages from the airline to --> transport route to the conveyors or whatever other areas bagages goeas through). IF NOT YET, then we can assume that the airport top officials (and maybe head of tourism ) DOES NOT REALLY CARE. Cases like this will just be another old news . SICK AND SAD SYSTEM.

Also, they will go back home and pass the word to their friends and families about being robbed at the airport and tourism will suffer as a result. It was never stolen until I took Cebu Pacific from Clark to Cebu. Gone, and the airline sent me to a central facility and there did nothing. In the Philippines especially, as they may be smiling, but many are looking to steal as well. The rest of Asia is fine, but se more caution in the Philippines.

Here's a suggestion that I think may work. Put your stuff in packing cubes, then stuff them in a black garbage bag, tie it and wrap it with one of those industrial straps that can't be cut easily. Put inside the suitcase, then wrap a couple or 3 regular luggage straps outside. I wouldn't wrap the suitcase in plastic because that's tacky. Pack your essentials in your carryon so you don't need to unpack right away when you get to your destination. Hopefully the thieves would get discouraged and move on to the next one. It's also a good idea to include an Apple airtag in each luggage.

Never wear watches or jewellery through NAIA. NEVER. We always zip up valuables in the inside pockets of the carry on bag. We always have our check in mags plastic wrapped to stop airport security and baggage handlers stealing. Always take off your belt before security. Put ladies purse or handbag inside the carry on bag. Cameras and mobile phones always inside the carry on. You can do without them for the short while you are in the security area.

There needs to be harsher penalty for airport employees who commit illegal acts, including immediate termination and / or jail time. The problem I see in the Philippines is when someone is caught in corruption, they are not punished, or worse, covered by the higher ups who are corrupt themselves. So the cycle continues. The only way it will stop (maybe), is to expose them and make sure they are punished to the full extent of the law.

    Dear Mr President
I am a USA citizen and been in your country as a tourist many times but as you know the crminal activities at NAIA terminal 2 causing major concerns for foreign tourists and specially no action has been taken to overhaul the entire Transportation Department and specially the NAIA departments vision. The security staff at NAIA Terminal 2 has been rubbing foreigners for years and it is obvious that leadership at NAIA and department of transportation are well aware and not doing anything to fix these issues for years.
I as a foreigner do not feel safe to travel to your country and my tourist dollars will be spent elsewhere unless you as president take immediate action.
You can deploy national guard to watch the airport screeners (since the CCTV not managed vigilantly) and immediately stop this embarrassment for your country. The tourists are powerless and unable to proof these rubberies.
Hope more actions are taken soon from the office of the president to eliminate these kinds of criminal activities at your NAIA airport so the foreign tourists feel safe to travel to your country.
    Sincerely
    Iradj Farahmand

Such screening is categorized for example jobs where you have to interact with children, have financial transactions, have access to personal medical information and so forth. If an employee looses a good code of conduct, he automatically looses his job and cannot apply for any other job in that same field. A very good system if you ask me.

I am currently in the phillipines and tbh i was terrified to land in NAIA after hearing from filipinos on plane and aircraft personnel. I would say keep an eye out for obvious reason. I heard from an ex security worker that checked in luggage is more prone to stealing than carry on. with carryon, it was easier. since you are able to look from the other side. However, there has been stories that leaving NAIA is more to be worried about since it could be a part where you do not see your belongings directly anymore. So precious things, money and electronics should be in the carryon. I am not sure about passport at hand while going through the screening so if anyone knows more about that, it could definitely be appreciated. In carryon or keep at hand for security reasons? I hope this comments helps

He said I will never be allowed to travel through the airport and if they see me they will make trouble. So I reported them as well. As long as corruptions are lingering around these old employees, there will always be thieves around because these thieves have been there for so long and have learned a lot to know the in and out of system! Duterte was very diligent on corruption when it was found and I hope that the new administration will increase their efforts to curb corruption in their own government agencies and prosecute the perpetrators and fire the department heads who probably know exactly what is going on and are taking a cut . We would hate to see tourism damaged by the actions of greedy thieves.
