A square in front of the bullfighting arena at Seville, the day of a bullfight. The crowd sings and cheers as the bullfighter Escamillo, Carmen's current lover, enters with Carmen on his arm. His "quadrille," the bullfighting team of matadors, banderillos and picadors, precedes him.

Pace is set by the conductor. Unless you saw Bizet do it himself nearly 200 years ago then... well... opinions, man. Seems normal to me, and I've been listening to renditions of this for 20+ years.

no... ive sang carmen multiple in bratislavian opera...ive sang in bratislava boys choir when i was 7-13yr old... then my voice have changed and i stopped singing. Just go watch carmen in opera and u will personally see how much faster carmen is. ;)
Maybe you could have gone even slower, so that the head bobbing in the chorus is more pronounced. This needs to be fast and the chorus should stand still, despite the intent of the setting.
