I remember seeing the Enterprise playset in a commercial and wanting it so bad. Was so disappointed when I never found it in stores. The figures and die-cast Enterprise alone were never enough to satisfy my appetite.

Before a single episode had even aired in the UK, I saw these figures in my Mum's catalogue. I saw how cool "Mr Wolf" looked, (yep, they spelt Worf with an "L"!), and he's been my favourite ever since. A couple of years ago, my Mrs bought me Mr Worf still on card for Christmas!

I remember this era like yesterday. I noticed the figures in K-Mart sometime in Fall of 1988. I was born in 1980, so it was my business to know which figures were available back then. I hadn't watched The Next Generation yet. My first figure was LaForge. I got a few more not long after that. I remember people talking about the show a lot. "Star Trek is back" was a common theme that I heard. Unfortunately when I finally watched it I didn't care for it. Neither did anyone in my class. You would think that 8 year olds would be into this line. I was the only kid in my class to buy some of these figures. By the summer of '89 every kid moved onto the Ninja Turtles. These Star Trek figures hung out on the shelves for a while. Not many kids were interested in them. The show moved too slow for us. Too many of us were Ritalin kids that got into Sonic The Hedgehog and Metallica. We liked things with a faster pace. These were adult collectables before adult collectables were a thing in action figures. Great era. Great memories. I had fun buying the figures that I did. It's too bad that the show didn't appeal to my age group better.

Then there was me, who abandoned TMNT for Star Trek. Wasn’t the only one. There were good reasons Star Trek was as strong as it was in the 90’s, and it wasn’t just because of adults who grew up on TOS.

    • @cyborgroxx

@@jasonschlierman412 yeah, but you're talking about the 90's. I was done with toys before the Playmates Trek figures came out. My last figures were Robin Hood & Pirates Of Dark Water. Christmas of 1991 was my last Christmas getting figures. And on that day (even though I asked for these toys month's before) I felt I was getting too old for toys. I was more into the Warrant & Guns N' Roses cassettes that I also got on Christmas along with sports cards. 1992 was spent watching MTV and chasing girls. I didn't even know Playmates made a Trek line in the 90's until I got back into collecting again in the 2000's. To me the Galoob line from the late 80's was Star Trek.

@@cyborgroxx And that your personal story, but your point was that children in general where not interested in TNG, which is false. Beside myself, I personally knew a lot of kids that became Star Trek fans as children because of TNG. Was it as big as say X-Men or Batman: TAS? No, but it was still popular.

@@jasonschlierman412 I hate the internet, lol. Ok, yes, there were kids out there that liked it...I just didn't know any. At least not in my grade. As far as X-Men go, I was done with cartoons by the time that came out. I did like the Sega game though.

That first ad sounds like the 1950's Ovaltine Secret Squadron commercial. Modular sets looked like a cool idea, very much how the shows/movies seemed to jump around from location to location. Enterprise play set keeps reminding me of a cereal bowl, which certainly has some merit to it too. I'd have a great time eating cereal out of the Enterprise bridge. La Forge's visor would've been the ultimate collectable for fans.

This must be a false memory that I made up in my head. I remember this one time I saw a commercial on TV for an Enterprise-D playset that was 3 or 4 stories tall. It included various areas of the corridors and a turbolift. I also remember it showcasing figures of Dr. Crusher, Troi, and Wesly. It all looked great too. Since there is no evidence of at least prototypes of this I have to admit it must have been either a dream or a memory that I somehow made up. The Galoob 3.75" figures were, and I hate to say this, kind of dumb. Most were moulded holding a phaser (in both left and right hands), with the other arm bent at the elbow with a closed fist - they couldn't hold anything - and yet, most had tricorder accessories that would go over the figures' shoulder, but was so stiff it stuck out sideways. The paint apps were odd - I have Picard and Riker, and for some reason, both have bright yellow lips. I was not upset when they stopped production. Loved the 'Playmates' figures, though. Got 100+ of them. They were awesome. Thanks for the video. Nice one.

NEver chased down the Galoob line, even though I was a Trek fan and collector at the time, getting most of the Playmates line
Even at the time of release, the Galoob stuff was uninteresting, coming across as a quick cheap license grab to knock out crummy toys.
Those walkie talkies and FM radios pretty much support this view.
Trak had been plagued by cheap licensed products since the 60's, usually slapping "Star Trek" on some generic toy already released. Some of the Remco and Mego stuff of the 70s did this, but Mego also did a great job with their action figures and playsets of the 70s, a first for Trek

I still think this line had a ton of untapped potential. I think the sculpting on these figures - and the scale in which they were made - were fantastic. The Playmates line was always too glossy, too cartoonish and too large for my taste. Playmates had more articulation and an insane amount of variety, but they never felt right to me. I wish the Galoob series had started with more figures, that came with more accessories. I also wish the hand sculpts were neutral and not stuck in fists and holding phasers. But on the whole? Love this toy line and wish they'd had been able to stick it out long enough to to really capitalize on TNG's eventual success.

I noticed the saucer section was more round than the actual ships was and one photo shows the decals at an odd angle as if the saucer section wasn't stationary to the neck. @imfsresidentotaku9699 Год назад

The playsets weren't "shoehorned into grossly out of scale spaces or ships," you're just setting your standards unreasonably high. Many ships from Star Trek aren't exactly scalable, so making a playset of one that's in scale with the figures wouldn't be feasible or economical. There's a reason why a life-sized Enterprise model was never made for the shows or movies, is what I'm saying.

My parents bought me a set of Galoob Trek figures, and I think I traded them all to a friend for his old and broken toys. I regretted it for a long time, not nearly as much after looking up pics of them. Horridly bland, and I thought the same thing as a kid.

I think of three different reasons why the FM radios, walkie-talkies with combadges, the electronic Enterprise, the flying Enterprise, the inflatable Enterprise, the three actionscapes: Enterprise bridge, transporter room and alien planet, the Enterprise playset, Wesley Crusher and Romulan action figures, the die-cast Ferengi marauder and the VISOR toy wasn't released:
    A. The first season sucked!
    B. The toy line sucked!
    C. When the crew of the Enterprise went back in time in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, they created by accident, a series of events which ultimately led to the explosion of Galoob headquarters, thus preventing these toys from ever being made.

That Junkman yeah, as much as I support the free market, it seems like a company who is buying up all companies tend to become complacent. Without competition holding their feet to the fire they seem to slow down innovation. A good example is when WWF bought all the wrestling promotions. Without competition their product took a slow dive.....sorry about my rant

The Galoob figures never impressed me.The figures looked pretty chunky and the phasers molded into the hands never looked right. But the first season of TNG was pretty bad and the second season was a marginal improvement. When Gene Roddenberry "lost creative control" the characters and the show started to be much better. By this time Galoob had given up and the Playmates series came along soon after.HUGE improvement.

I thought the Galoob figures were crap. They were equal in quality to the STAR WARS figures from the original trilogy, that came out years earlier, so they should have been of better quality.
The diorama playsets looked juvenile, like they were some grade school kid's science fair project.

I love how they were in scale with the Star Wars Kenner figures. The best episode of TNG was when the Enterprise discovered a wormhole that transported the ship back in time to a galaxy far, far away. Sadly, that episode only aired in my house during Action Figure Theater...😞

"Shut up Wesley." I had a "Star Trek The Motion Picture" bridge. I only had the figure of Captain Kirk, but my Star Wars figures enjoyed the playset. I had five storm troopers and two snow troopers that would storm the bridge. I had two Death Star Commanders, but I pretended they were rebel troopers. It was awesome, until I got my Death Star World, and then there was no going back.
