  • Here is a lesson on how to develop clean and precise hi hat chokes. This technique is great for playing both long and short notes as well as adding color to any groove, fill or solo.
I show you how to develop this technique using a few different coordination sequences as well as some rhythms from my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion.
The equipment used in the video is as follows:
    Bass Drum - Peavey Radial 1000 22" x 16 "
Snare Drum - Pearl 14"x5" Free Floater with a maple shell
    Cymbals
Sabian 13" HH Hi Hat Cymbals
Sabian 22" Ralph Peterson Ride Cymbal
The microphones are two Sennheiser MKH 800 Overheads and an AKG D112 on the Bass Drum

It's great that you share your drumming knowledge. Cats in Manhattan taught me this stuff in 1973. Crap, I learned how to do this at 50 BPM! I learned by swinging eighth notes. Maybe I shouldn't say that unless I watch the whole video! You never see this taught to people! Kudos to you!

Well done Rick. And let's not forget Billy Cobham for his great hi-hat stuff and of course Tony Williams.

Once again Rick, you've knocked it out of the park. I love these practical and useful lessons.

That's so cool. I never thought to play those rhythms as open hi hat notes with the right hand.

Not even sure how I've not stumbled on your stuff before o_0. I feel like I missed quite a bit of life here 🙂
You're one of the most technically gifted drummers I've seen! Not to mention a great feel and sound...and of course your concepts. Cheers sir!

You mentioned Roy Hanes. Would love to see an explanation and transcription on how Mr. Haynes approached and played Afro Blue on "Love Letters." How he approached dynamics, phrasing, etc. Roy is 96 years old.

I did a solo dedicated to Roy a while back. Search for Roy's Ruse on this channel.

@@rickdior I will. Thank you. I've seen Roy many times. He has slowed a bit but he is still a great musician.

There are no good videos or books on this topic and I've struggled with it since I started lol
