It’s really strange to me to see not only how much vaporwave has exploded (for the second time!) over this past year but also the lack of understanding of its history. While Lopatin was crucial in pioneering the most popular form of the genre, the biggest debt is probably owed to Ariel Pink (specifically his Holy Shit project) and John Maus for pioneering the nostalgia craze that led to vaporwave. Being in this comment section feels like living in a world where time is not a straight forward line (or should I say we aren't limited to only percieve it that way ) I feel like I'm in a room with all those people from 8, 9, 10 years ago, some from 1 or 2 months ago, I actually feel that I'm really close to them, I can imagine all of us in one single room
Well, it makes sense no? One of the prime ideological concerns of vaporwave as an aesthetic movement is to foreground the way in which late-stage capitalism has murdered the standard relationship/narrative to time humans have had since antiquity. We live in atemporality. The future understood as progress, in both material and political terms (we cant imagine anything other than capitalistic ecological destruction) has been completely dismantled, leaving only the pasts misguided visions of the future to be consumed. We are thus bombarded with ghosts of the pasts, all screaming different non-realizable dreams of the future in our face, while we finde ourselves in the eternal now of the internet. This has not changed. This was the fact of the matter 10 years ago, and it is still the fact of the matter. If the people of the late 1800's murdered god, We, of the late 20th century, murdered history, and the future... "Where has [THE FUTURE] gone?" he cried. "I shall tell you. We have killed [IT] - you and I. We are [ITS] murderers. But how have we done this? How were we able to drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What did we do when we unchained the earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving now? Away from all suns? Are we not perpetually falling? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there any up or down left? Are we not straying as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is it not more and more night coming on all the time? Must not lanterns be lit in the morning? Do we not hear anything yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying [THE FUTURE]? Do we not smell anything yet of [IT]'s decomposition? [THE FUTURE] is dead. [HISTORY] remains dead. And we have killed [IT]. How shall we, murderers of all murderers, console ourselves? That which was the holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet possessed has bled to death under our knives. Who will wipe this blood off us? With what water could we purify ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we need to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we not ourselves become gods simply to be worthy of it?"
These vaporwave guys usually just cover or remix a song and then call it their own it's pretty blatant plagiarism.
