Footage before the fight, traning, interviews, ,the weigh-in ,full fight and footage in lockroom after the fight.
Date: 1973-07-02
Location: Earls Court Arena, Kensington, London, United Kingdom
Referee: Harry Gibbs 59.25-58.5
British referee Harry Gibbs, the only official, scored it 59¼ points for Frazier and 58½ for Bugner. Under the British scoring system, the winner of a round receives 5 points and the loser 4¾.
Frazier put Bugner down with a left hook in a neutral corner in the tenth round.
Joe Frazier won his first fight tonight since losing his heavyweight championship last January. But his 12‐round decision over Joe Bugner may have done more for his opponent's reputation than for his.
Working from a glowering rage before the, fight and charging relentlessly, Frazier managed to knock down his taller, heavier oponent for count of 9 in the 10th round.
However, Bugner came up off his knees to stagger Frazier in the same round and close his left eye. The final minutes passed with the estimated crowd of 14,000 cheering Bugner as they used to cheer Henry Cooper, their heroic and oftenbloodied contender of the previous generation.
With the new champion, George Foreman, sitting a few feet below him, there was no doubt Frazier wanted to put Bugner away.

Joe had some incredible traits for a fighter. A go to KO punch, great head movement (once he figured out your rhythm), an incredible chin, legendary stamina and the willingness to die for the win. RIP Joe. One of the greatest ever.
Joe Frazier Had The Greatest Left Hook In Boxing. Joe Had Had The Greatest Head Movement In Boxing And He Probably Was The Greatest Pressure Fighter There Ever Was!!!
Probably and a legend no doubt but Ali didn't half work him out in that second fight and Foreman as well.
...and then came Foreman.
@@michaelb4538What do you mean by "didn't half work him out"?
@@danielhkhk7283& then *ALI❤ came🔙😂…*
To bad it didn't work on Forman 😢
I was at this fight at Earls Court in London, and was well placed to see the knockdown. If Joe Frazier had landed the second left hook which he had ready, Joe Bugner would have been seriously hurt, and his career probably ended. Both my companion at the fight and I immediately recognised the sportsmanship of a great fighter. Being an avid boxing fan, the raw aggression of Frazier was obvious on TV. It was only seeing him box live when you experienced the smooth aggression and co-ordination of his style. It was a privilege to watch him box. Bonus of the night was meeting George Foreman, in his massive Texas cowboy hat!! A marvellous night of sport, watching this video brings back those happy memories.
Stop telling lies you wasn't there
What great memories you must have David, I'm very jealous!
@@glynhannaford7332 Yes, fortunate to see some live fights when I was much younger, and the seats much cheaper!!!! Checkout Joe Bugner vs Miguel "Angel" Paez, and Ralph Charles vs Jose Napoles for the world welterweight championship. I was at those fights in London, and they are on RUclips. Will be listening to the Dilyan
White fight on the radio tonight, That's how much times have changed. Best Wishes.
Hello, David. Are you based in Philadelphia? Thanks for the insight. I love hearing from fans who attended these matches live.
@@76WestSports Based in Swansea. UK. Glad you enjoyed the narrative, I enjoyed sharing the experience.
Bugner was one tough cookie, Frazier hit him pretty good for 12 rounds and he was still up on his toes, not many could take that kind of punishment.
Nice video, Bugner seemed to have fought almost everyone that mattered for the most part during his career. Tough guy, with decent boxing skills. Frazier a machine, fearless as usual...Hats off to both of these guys.
I agree
Bugner was a lot better than given credit for, the public turned against Bugner after he got the decision over Cooper, it wasn't Bugners fault, Harry Gibbs scored the fight.
@@stevebowness9435 And Harry Carpenter soured things with his biased commentary.
@@paulburns1333 Absolutely Correct 💯
I don't think Bugner was dis-liked because of his surprise decision over Henry Cooper, but more so, because of his subsequent loss against Jack Bodell, an old timer whom Cooper had beaten twice plus subsequent losses to almost every decent guys he ever fought, albeit, with some decent performances.
49:53 - Hats off Joe. I mean this is boxing, it's about punching the other guy. Joe stunned Bugner with that left hook, he had few seconds to land another and finish him off for good. But he didn't. What a heart this man had.
if it was floyd, he'd have used his elbow or knee so long referee not looking.
Now if that was Ali he would've made sure to get in a few more hooks but the thing is Ali could take those kind of punches and not drop.
That's why we love Joe. Also good sportsmanship coming from Bugners corner. They pulled Bugner off Joe when the bell went off and no one noticed.
So right
FRAZER was real honor man
Yea - Foreman would have landed another couple of punches to the neck.
frazier is one of the best ever , but bugner was tough as hell
Frazier never destroyed a top heavy weight champion 😮
Bugner fought competently, was a genuine challenge and got hit by some fuckin mack truck, soul crushing lefts to the body and chin and got up from a left to the jawbone that puts 90% of heavyweights into a coma and still fought aggressively afterward, respect Joe Bugner.
Joe Bugner never got his due in my view. He had a long career and took a lot of flack in the UK simply because he dethroned the much loved Henry Cooper. After moving to Australia he again climbed the ranks and as a quite old fighter took on the much younger Frank Bruno only to lose via KO. When one considers that Bugner fought Ali twice and gave Frazier all he could handle in this fight. Bugner seemed to always put up a good fight. Ali was so accurate with his punches in their 2nd fight but Bugner boxed beautifully. A real quality fight to watch. Bugner took to acting in Australia and seems to always play the bouncer type role which he well suited to do. Hungarian, English, Australian? Either way a great fighter!
And looking at it again I personally believe he beat Cooper. The commentary was one sided
Only champions are great fighters. Bugner was a great contender at most
I agree wholeheartedly with you on Joe Bugner
@@nigelhinds7154 I think Joe bugner had a fighting style similar to Holyfield, always bouncing and moving, what do you think? When I see him fight it seems like I'm seeing Holyfield
Bugner was an incredible contender but the competition he faced was the best heavyweight roster ever and barred him from any world titles. And unfortunately that's how the public liked to keep it since he was vilified for that win over Cooper. But beyond that he is a living example of the talent of the Golden era, how he dominated the Australian scene in his mid 40s not dissimilar to what Foreman was doing at the same time. These guys could come out of retirement and bash guys who hadn't even been born during their prime, a testament to their legend.
Fair Play to J.F he could've seriously hurt him. R.I.P Champ
Frazier has such a distinctive style...never seen anyone fight quite like him....theres been similar guys like Dwight Muhamad Qawi.....but never anyone quite like him...........Bugner was never a world beater, but he was one them guys that would give most people a good tough fight.
Crazy to think that 10 years later bugner was beaten by Joe fraziers son marvis.
Joe Bugner was a game fighter and took all comers, former champions, ranked contenders & was in it with the best for a long career
Yeah but Bugner was far removed from his prime then... you can see he is uninterested, only there to collect a paycheck. But here, he gives it his all.
Wow never knew that..
Da war Bugner nicht mehr der Bugner vergangener Zeit.
I just love a boxing announcer who is a non stop chatterbox. Otherwise I might be able to concentrate on the fight and enjoy it, and we can't have that.
Geez, this fight would be so much more enjoyable if the announcer quit jabbering about Ali and Foreman, neither who were boxing that night, and just announced what he was watching in front of him.
Joe's trainer - Yancey "Yank" Durham passed away about a month after this fight. The great Eddie Futch was there to pick up the reins but Frazier always said he felt most comfortable with Yank in his corner.
Yancey “Yank” Durham had a way to blend his boxing training to cater to Fraziers style of boxing, far better than Eddie Futch. That saying no disrespect to Futch, he took on Frazier corner and did very well.
Is it me or did it appear that Brent Musberger was openly rooting for Bugner?
That was a pretty good fight. I've only ever seen short highlights. I've always thought Joe Bugner was a little underrated. Really good footwork. Pretty fast hands. Not always accurate though. Descent defence, and a solid bloke. A nice all round boxer. 👍
Joe fought out of my hometown St Ives Cambridgeshire trained by Andy Smith Joe always called him Mr Smith when Joe used to fight the town was buzzing with anticipation weeks before the event. Joe was a lot lot better than people gave him credit for there’s no way Henry Cooper could’ve went the distance with Joe Frazier. . But Joe didn’t have the killer instinct neither did Muhammad Ali but being better Joe Bugner he didn’t have to have it. That’s what makes Ali’s career so incredible.
@@thomasreed49 Andy Smith also trained Dave Boy Green. Halcyon days!
@@thomasreed49 Henry Cooper says in his autobiography his manager Jim Wicks cared for his welfare so much he would never have let him fight a Frazier like figure who just kept coming forward no matter what.
@@paulcolville5972
Thanks Paul One of my best friends fought Dave boy green as an amateur twice. David was too strong for him. Jhon gave a good account of himself. I can remember being with the pair of them at amateur boxing events. You’re right about Henry Cooper Jim Wicks did look him as did Andy Smith it was different then they looked after their boxers as if they were their sons. Ps I don’t like giving bad news but David is not too well at the moment please make sure you pray for him thanks.
@@thomasreed49 oh I'm sorry to hear that. Always liked seeing how he'd done well for himself over the years and kept his health and wealth after his retirement attending events etc, unlike many of his other peers sadly. All the best to you all.
Bugner, first time seeing him, was a helluva boxer. He had the misfortune off coming along 5 decades too soon. Good effort against one of the all time greats.
He'd clean up the division these days. Salute to him and thanks for the share.
Not many guys could take a Frazier left hook to chin and bugner was no exception ...good sportsmanship by Joe F as usual because he really could've hurt bugner
Do you think that all these people, if they're still alive, preparing the ring, would remember this one day job
They've done?
Joe wasn't having it from that reporter. He must have wrote some bad stuff or something.
Yup Frazier contradicted almost every statement or question from the interviewer. He seemed very much on edge in his first fight after losing his belt.
Great upload. 👍
Frazier paused when he had bugner in trouble he was literally a sitting duck one more viscous hook and that could of ended it
Good sportsmanship 😁.
Nice gesture and kind words from Durham, who died less than a month after this fight.
Despite the great volume of punches that Bugner was able to land early on, he didn’t seem to be able to hit Frazier hard enough to keep him away.
True but few fighters could stand up to George Foreman's punches it took 6 knockdowns before George finally put Frazier away and very few fighters had a punch like George but fair play to JB for putting up a fight and going the distance.
He did at 50:46. Frazier's knee buckled
Joe's ever forward pressure style was effective against certain fighters, but against heavy hitters like Foreman, spelt his demise.
Sluggers beat swarmers.
Nur Foreman konnte ihn ich stoppen...
I remember this fight. Incredible
Love smokin joe.
One of the greats who fought all of the other greats. Best wishes Joe.
I'm British but man, that commentary was astonishingly biased in favour of Bugner:
>Frazier pressuring Bugner in rounds 10-12, generally landing the bigger hits and controlling the pace.
'Frazier tired himself early in this fight, Bugner is making a comeback!'
??
Seeing Frazier hold up from hitting Bugner again was no surprise....His first fight with Quarry he stepped back and waved the referee in after nearly tearing Quarry's eye out with a left hook.
He did, but that was the second gight
Another sad video to watch as Frazier is gone and Bugner's son says Bugner doesn't remember his career. These warriors have us great entertainment but they pay a big price.
That talk of Joe Bugner not having power must have been a bit of myth. If you can rock Joe Frazier badly, then you have power.
And the state of Frazier's eye at the end. If this version of Joe Bugner was around today, he'd be world champion.
Ha ha 😂. Absolute nonsense
Joe Frazier against Joe Bugner fifty-one years ago was on ITV.
Reg Gutteridge was at Ringside at Earl's Court in London.
Frazier landed his brutal left hook to floor Bugner.
Joe was a gentleman. Open target, Earnie Shavers would scored a goal with Bugners head.
Joe Frazier should have ended the fight earlier when he got Bugner with that left hook in the corner. Bugner was definitely out. All it took was one more hook, but he held back. What an empathetic sportsman. Another one will live Bugner fully dropped and cold. The commentator didn't even talk about this quality of Frazier's. Yet some people ask why the referee raised Frazier's hand at end of the fight.
Fighting Joe Frazier was like going into a meat grinder. Something I didn't think about until I heard Bugner speak is that he probably spoke fluent Hungarian, Since his parents escaped from Hungary in the mid 50's.
Thank you for uploading.
Frazier much respect . My favorite heavyweight champ. Hagler favorite middleweight champ
Both are some of the toughest dudes ever
Big Joe gave Ali and Frazier a good fight - but couldnt beat Jack Bodell. He seemed like a guy with more talent than either belief or someone who couldnt get up for the easier fights. He will always be an enigma.
Brent musburger is the worst fight caller I've ever heard..I listen to this fight again and musburget is the worst fight commentary in sports..wow.
Joe Bugner lands a couple of left jabs
Commentator:" it's unbelievable the amount of punishment that Frazier can take".
Frazier who had Just landed dozens of punches to the body and head: 😑
You already know, if it was Ali in there, Joe ain't pulling that punch like he did with Bugner. Smokin Joe is the man though
🎉FRAZIER UNO D LOS MEJORES¡D TODOS LOS TIEMPOS
Why did the referee raise Frazier's hand at the end of the fight before a decision had been rendered? Is that an old practice in Boxing?
The ref was the only judge in this fight.
GREAT FIGHT
Bugner - Hungarian born family with Austrian/German roots
No disrespect to Bugner (never a big fan) but Frazier was in a different League
bugner went the distance in a close fight how can how can Frazier be in a different league you know fuck all about boxing
Good content man.
Did you disappear from me and Hotboxing breakdowns?
Where have you been?
Come back! 🥊
@@THEDONSTR8Fightah76 Nah RUclips actually screws up my notifications so when you or Hot boxing post a video I don't get a notification.
Appreciate it thx
Joe Frazier seemed in a foul mood during his interview. Not a surprise as a lot of people disrespected him at that point in time.
The interviewer questions made him respond in that way. He wasn't necessarily in a bad mood.
@@KelzKelz After re-watching this I would have to agree with you.
@@KelzKelz He handled himself very well and answered direct and shut down.
That commentator knows absolutely nothing about boxing by far the worst I've ever heard
True :)
Bugner is a tough fuckin guy. Its not an easy thing to back Frazier against the ropes and he did it several times and won some rounds in this fight. Even as Frazier took complete command later in the fight Bugner was still landing solid shots while Frazier was coming in. He also lasted the fulll distance. Something that only 3 other men did. He very likely would of stopped him if he kept unloading after the left hook that dropped him. As aggressive and dangerous as Frazier was there were several incidents in his career that were similar to that. The second Quarry fight comes to mind and I do believe he may have taken it easy on George Scrap Iron Johnson who was a sparring parter of Joes although there is no film of that fight to confirm that claim.
Joe looks like Kirk Douglas in his Prime!
Ridiculous, repetitive over-enthused word-salad commentary by Brent Musburger.
But great content, pre during and post fight, nonetheless.
head area 🙄
A lot of these fights were broadcast over radio in these days. On closed circuit television and on public radio so the commentators of that time would have to audibly portray the action to people who were listening radio. Your comment is valid but it was different times. I hope this helps
@@MackTheGovnah interesting view, to be sure. But by the 70s, however, very little on the radio anymore, at least in North America. Musburger was never a radio guy to my knowledge, but started in print media. and he was short sighted journalist at that. His reaction to John Carlos' and Tommie Smith's political statement at the 1968 Olympics speaks volumes about his perspective and vantage point, making himself an expert in areas he knows nothing about, including how to analyze a boxing match - that's evidenced from his meaningless blurby lack of analysis in the above fight.
@@mitchchuvalo799 point taken
all dem body shots made him lower his head and come in close, followed by nice left upper cuts inside, leaving both head and body exposed to frazier's shorter arms whereas bugner couldn't get full extension
all the hooks ended up being upper cuts because of same thing, snappin that head back
joe was my favorite but he should have quit after getting beat so bad against foreman... the fights with ali especially the first one took a lot out of joe....it showed against bugner...i feft for joe...hated to see him take so much punishment.
Joe bugner was better in this fight
Good boxer, great chin and always in shape. Much better fighter than Jerry Quarry and has ended up much better. Very underrated.
The commentary is broke unfortunately.
Commentary is soooo one sided sooooo biased!!
Thanks for the video, BOXING LEGENDS
Everybody seems to forget that joe bugner can box and can take a punch. I don't think that joe frazier had lost his punch at all. I have seen bugner live many times, he always seems worse when taking meaningless fights.
I keep hearing the commentators remark about Bugner’s lack of punching power. Is that something that can be corrected?
I think he's a bit old for that now.
Most boxers are born with power some boxers have to work hard in the gym to work on there power bugner was a boxer so his style was speed he could bang as his record suggests but he didn't have fraziers natural power in both hands that was the only difference in this fight.i personally think bugner fought the wrong fight more movement around the ring working off his jab would have set the big shot up especially with bugners reach advantage. instead he stood toe to toe cracking fight but a good boxer should always beat a good brawler if they get on them toes
Early in Bugner's career, if my memory correct, an opponent did die after fighting Bugner. Bugner is a tall guy who had the skills that would have made him a world champion nowadays.
Frazier was frightening even during sparring sessions. No mercy.
He had long skinny forearms - a quick puncher, but not a strong one ( comparatively )
@Leslie Dodds us boxers no what we're getting into when we step in that square ring it's a dangerous sport being punched in the head over and over again look at eubanks vs Watson benn vs mclennon it's very sad to be honest what can happen to you or your opponent im sure it must of affected bugners career eubank definitely wasn't the same fighter when he done what he done to Watson stays with boxers forever very sad that
A tough fight Joe Frazier but he was the winner. Good foght after the loss to Foeman. The announcers sound like there under water. Better that way
why did u say JF gets floored?
Thanks 😊
Thank you for watching
Why so much swathing during an interview man.
This Joe frazier was a scary dude
who is doing the shrink wrap so annoying
Smokey Joe famous let hook🤔🤔!
I wonder what would have happened had they gone 3 more rounds.
In today's boxing Bugner would have ruled for years.
Joes boxers r always cute. Those r like baby brother’s ones.
L9l
I don't fancy that ring girl 29:07
You ruin it by saying bugner gets floored
yes, why did u say JF gets floored?
Joe Frazier was only 208 lbs, a tough dude, he has the best left and right hooks. If he was a bit bigger I think it would help, that's why George foreman knocked him out in the first round.
It wasn't just Foremans size,George implemented pushing tactics so Frazier couldn't get close.Essentially pouring water over fire.
Dimensions are important. Fraser couldn't shake Bagner with a powerful hook. Bugner is strong.
49:53 Check it out Joe Frazier did shake him up
Yeah, I looked it up! But this is far from not a knockout. Bugner returned 50:44
Ha! Ha! Paul Sykes sparing joe frazier!!!
Am I just high
Or is Joe Frazier wearing socks & slippers to this fight
I'm 36 mins in the fight & I just noticed that
JO FRAZIER the last of the MOHICANS 💓🥺🥺🥺
bugner may not have won but i think he just showed how much tougher than everyone else he was to go that distance.
Heavyweights weren't very heavy... 15St and 14 St..
At 27.34 sounds like someone taking a piss 😆😆
Put the colon in their for the time stamp 27:34
Frazier head butted Bugner over and over again.
No he didn’t. Head butting occurs when their is an intentional butt by head. Frazier bored in & when they came in close there may have been clash of heads but not a genuine blow.
Frazier came in a trim 208 lbs and would’ve given Foreman a far better fight.
Frazier woulda been able pish him better
Eeehhh??!!! Le dió ganador sin los puntajes de los jueces??!!! Lo robaron a Bugner
bad haircut by bugner for getting hit... The hairbunches left and right from his neck are shaking like wet foam balls everytime Joe hits well. This really looks stupid. ;-DDD
Joe Bugner was a city boy. Sure he threw a lot of punches,..but he was weak minded compared to Johansson or Eckland. There is a reason why people become more aggressive and less athletic as they grow older.
Joe was the winner.Fraser and his team were 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
NO QUEDO MUY CLARO ...SI GANO FRAZIER...EN FIN...
While no one could keep Frazier off them, it's interesting to see that Bugner actually did a ~better~ job of this than Ali did!
How? Bugner also got knocked down and if Frazier would have hit him one more time (as he should have), Bugner would have been KO'd.
Joe frazier, clames he didn't watch the fight, between ali and joe bugner, how did Frazier know, the fight
Turned into a dancing contest,,?
Lol he didn't like Ali
Bud Spencer!!!!!!!
30:02 "He has come here with the same fight against Bugner." No shocker. I think this was really Frazier's big downfall: he had exactly one style of fighting. It's a could style, since you can see his way of pressuring opponents repeated in modern fighters like Canlo Alvarez, but he just couldn't adapt to other ways of fighting when other ways were needed. I mean, he just charged in head first on Foreman of all people. Sure, you can take a shot or two from Bugner on the way in, but not Foreman.
It's the way he fought Josh. Frazier knew one way to fight and that was it. Remember Foreman was a huge man compared to Frazier.
Fighters don't really change their fighting styles. It's called muscle memory. Joe wasn't physically great but he was the toughest SOB of all time. He was physically outgunned by everyone but they didn't have his heart.
Yes, I agree completely. Frazier-Foreman 1 was the most clear example of styles make fights but I find that the second fight really highlights how Frazier could have won against Foreman. Imagine 1973 Frazier (pre-Manila, better eyesight, more power) when he first fought Foreman in the sunshine showdown but with his 1976 stick and move style, especially if he hadn't bloated himself to 215 (or even worse, 225 in the second fight) and kept to his prime weight of 205? I feel like had he just managed to get into those later rounds like Ali did (bearing in mind, to be fair, he didn't have the reach or size of Ali), he would have become a greater and greater threat to Foreman. And I say that with every respect to Big George, who I consider boxing's hardest hitter (I see Earnie Shavers and Liston as very close to him) and one of the top 5 greatest heavyweights to ever do it.
But we clearly saw in this 2nd fight how Frazier got to round 5 (fair enough, not a later round by any means but far better than round 2 he and Norton reached and his performance was far more even here than in 73) with Foreman when he was right at the point of retirement, was weaker, was older, was post war in Manila. I genuinely believe younger, closer to prime Frazier, had he been at his prime weight, but approached it with the stick and move style that bit closer to Ali in Rumble (although Big George was instructed not to pull and push, if he had, this style would have seen Frazier more out of the way and unavailable rather than his typical phone booth style, although even in reflex there's the odd instance where Foreman does still manage to push and pull Frazier here) he showed in this 2nd fight, that he could have got the job done. He clearly had the chin (got up 6 times after being knocked down 6 times by boxing's hardest hitter), had the power in his left hook (although Big George is admittedly one of boxing's greatest iron chinned heroes) and had that unbelievable cardio that, if he'd just made it to the later rounds with the kind of change in style that wasn't absolutely tailor made to leave him purely vulnerable to Big George (as seen in this rematch), I truly think Smoking Joe would have had a chance get his man. Love them both though.
the announcer very races he only get excited when bugner hit freezer but when Fraser through a lot of upper cuts he never mentioned it racism is a disease
No guy. Just no.
White announcers biased for the white fighter once again smdh
Joe bugger was a good boxer but early in his career he killed his opponent in the ring. It's thought that after that tragic incident, Joe's heart wasn't in it anymore. He continued to fight, knowing he could make money off of it..
THE BOXING STARTS AT 15:02
