Hi Garrett 👊 I think you’re doing an excellent job. I’m a huge fan of the fancy red floating arrows too. Thanks for the clarification. I’ve never been there either 🤷♂️
Your editing is very strong, my young buddy... had I known, I'd have suggested "Hotel Jerome" as a search term for images (Aspen's landmark & historic hotel). "all good, mate!" 😊
Excellent story Chris!! also your “chamber” was negative in the rear which will cause the inside and may even had it designed in from the factory. Often the angle is done that way to improve cornering grip and this will become exaggerated depending on load, tire choice and…driving styles…look an early 2000s BMW 5 series rear tires relative to the body…they exaggerate it on purpose to affect turn-in speed and corner grip. Take care and thanks for being a class act. You do our country proud for how you are!!
Chris, i attended a speaking engagement you did many years ago in Marshalltown. I followed your career and am so glad you give us these experienced details of what is going on in the peloton. I think you are awesome!😊
Love these stories, Chris! Hard to believe that no one could diagnose your Volvo wheel alignment issue 🙄 A competent tech with a good alignment rack should be able to get that sorted no problem! 😊
I was so stupid angry that day with so much happening days before it and right up to it. Thankfully nothing terrible happened and it just makes for a story now.👍🦋
What do you think had more effect on those teenagers, Chris, who is hardly a George Hincapie or the father looking at the mirror broken off of his car?
Well, I had the ‘Mis fortune’ of racing you when you were left off the tour team with Astana. I did the whole super week and though I was schillacked and outclassed in all races, the pace was markedly higher midway through the week when you showed up!
Chris, you actually said it was an “equipment” problem. Which was a perfect description that matches your story. Great content, I love the insights you give me. I’ve learned more about bike racing in the last 3 years from you than all the others.
Best cycling story EVER!!!! I can’t believe a 137 pound cyclist went full Mutant Ninja Rocky Balboa on 2 teenyboppers! Also didn’t know you were in San Diego at the time. Maybe you swooshed passed me up Palomar Mountain. Legend has it that it was Floyd Landis’s favorite mountain ride. Keep up the excellent RUclips content.
My theory is that MVDP is the ultimate stress test. Just as you pointed out, he's always cutting the corners, off in the grass, and running up berms. So Alpecin has had to pick their equipment to withstand him. Jumbo riders, on the other hand, seem to keep it on the road and have tuned their gear according. It's probably and advantage for them in most races, but not PR
I woke up with a nasty headache and feeling like hell thanks to an extremely nasty pollen raid. Storytime With Chris Horner was exactly what I needed to entertain (and educate) me while waiting for my allergy meds to kick in. Thanks for sharing the Volvo story to illustrate your take on the bike tire discussion. Perfect way to explain it all.
Great points Chris! There is so much variation in frames, wheels, tires, riding weight, and PSI, and even mechanic skills etc. could effect the results. That story was hysterical and sad at the same time! :( But at least you and your wife got a sort-of vaca out of the deal!
Nice story!! That flat for WVA on the last climb robbed the fans from watching WVA and MDVP battle it out after such hard work from that front group, regardless of who would have won!
Thank you for clarifying your point about all the possible factors that can result in a mechanical issue. Love to hear your experiences as a pro cyclist. It is extra special for me to hear about all the cyclist that inspired me to take up cycling.
Excellent story Chris. In this day and age when everyone wants to make a snap judgement or assign blame without doing the research or knowing all the facts, it's rare to see this sort of insight. Well done.
You nailed it! Exactly my thoughts when I saw that MvdP and WvA were on the same tyre company. So many factors here. Frame geometry, stiffness, pressure, rim width, stiffness, etc. TJV needs to figure it out by next year. I don't always agree with your strategy takes, but this one, 100% agree
I love story times!! That just made my afternoon hike in the wind and snow awesome!! If you are running low air pressure and have a stiff bike and you are a big guy you put a lot of torque into the frame it can pop the beed..seen it done and as big and strong as wout is that could have happened!! That is just my take!!
Good point about the source of JV's issues not necessarily being just a tire problem. Reminds me of a recent video from @worstretirementever The premise of which is 'It's not the bottom bracket'
Great storytime and technical discussion. Nuance is lost on most people who live in the internet. Like many of life's problems, there are multiple variables, which do not show up on the first google search. As for tires, as a casual tourist and recreational rider, I recommend Schwalbe Marathon, they wear like iron, and at a svelte 730g per tire (700x32, tube not included), are perfect for today's weight conscious racer!
As mentioned early and related, I have a BMW wagon Sports pkg.. similar camber issue by design from the OEM. I suspect the R model Volvo is designed for more aggressive handling.. hence the excess camber. An alignment specialist shop would’ve pointed that out.
Doesn't do you any good now, but I had a Volvo V70 around that same time and after wearing out the original tires at about 35K, I went through tires in 15-20K a few times until one tire guy told me that I needed a specifically rated tire for that car. Once I got the correctly rated tires, I was back to getting 40K+ miles like one should.
Storytime with Horner, FTW! Please add more of this to your channel! Roger de Vlaeminck got one puncture in all his many, many, many Roubaix's. Same with Johan Museeuw, who I think only punctured in his very last Roubiax. Boonen had a bike fail him when he was riding Merckx's, but apart from that I'm not aware of any mechanical he ever had. Cancellara may have ridden into a post in Flanders, but he never met a cobble that gave him a flat that I'm aware of. There is an almost mystical factor of "feeling the stones" that just can't be defined. MVdP was all over the place, in the grass, on the berm, you name it, but never flatted. There is luck there for sure, but also something else. Side note, I assumed Wout was on the TPS they were talking about, but apparently he wasn't. We do see his back wheel slide around a bit just after the last left-hand corner in the Carrefour onto the long kilometer(ish) stretch to the end, but that's normal even without a flat. But if its was already soft, it means he punctured before that corner somewhere, possibly when Jasper, Matteau, and DegenCOBBLE were clashing shoulders in what should be a puncture-guaranteed skirmish in the gutter....We also know it was a slow leak because he wasn't riding a pancake out of the secteur. I will point out another thing: In the Hem secteur where MvDP almost missed the corner, the spectators were standing in the tarmac section, which impeded his approach and caused him to (almost) overshoot that corner and hit the barrier. If the race organizers are going to barrier the parts the riders aren't "allowed" to ride, they should also barricade the spectators back from the sections that they ARE allowed to ride in that particular spot. I think the same corner caused another crash last year for almost the same reason.
Thanks for the clarification. Now I see that we agree regarding my comment on your original PR video. Something the mechanics were doing for Jumbo let them down. Beyond WVA, Laporte had multiple flats at key times. Further to your comments about the Volvo…they didn’t have the entire setup dialed in for this race; like they tend to do at other races. Further, without even minor climbs, they couldn’t use the team car to line up a new/fresh bike like Pog did in Amstel Gold this weekend.
Chris, absolutely pure episode. I had a very similar issue jamming from NYC down to Charlotte and got harassed by some good ole boys on Charlottesville VA on a ride. Then 4600 at the BMW dealer down there. 3 days stranded. Good Lord!
Spot on analysis of Aspen. There are only a few paved roads in the area and they are busy with traffic. Not a lot of road riding to be had there besides Independence Pass. On the other hand, mountain biking there is insane, with a lot of trails!
My son's Chrysler did the exact same thing to brand new tires after only 5k miles. It had been aligned, and was checked again, and it was still within spec. After many hours I discovered a worn strut bushing that, once under force from driving, would allow the tires to toe out - wearing the inside of the tire out, while the outer half looked brand new. Oddly, when sitting, the alignment would return to within spec. Replaced both bushings and all's good. 😂
When he says "I was a mechanic for 9 years", I used to shop at the bike shop he worked at on Ronson Road in San Diego. By the time I started shopping there it had been taken over by Performance Bike, but they still kept hanging near the service dept a picture of him in his 20's, looked like randomly taken there at the shop. Kinda cool.
Hey Chris. It's Vittoria not Victoria. Other than that, I LOVE your attack on the Jetta. I once used my Carnacs to stave in the driver's door on a car that was trying to run me off the road. Ah, youth!
My first thought was the variable pressure setup Jumbo was supposedly using, which considering all the weak links you're introducing from the hub/pump to however they get the air into the tire seems a bit overboard to me. I started cycling in the 70s and have always admired the simplicity of bikes. The art of function and form. Thanks again to all Horners involved;)
If I remember correctly, the Volvo V60 R (my favorite car in the 2000's) had air adjustable suspension. Perhaps the bags burst leaving the rear sagging.
I worked for BMC in 2007 and our team cars were the V70. (But not the R version) I also owned one. We never had that issue with the tires, and those cars were loaded to the top on occasion!
Hi Chris. Today I had a tire issue on my mountain bike with no less than slime tubes inside. Rear dead flat when I unloaded bike and took twice to blow up tire. It seem to hold air for my just 13 mile ride. The issue here in Oklahoma are goat heads. They are deadly to tires and tubes, even slime tubes. John USA
The Volvo 'R" probably has a more aggressive camber angle on the rear tires as is common on sport or performance models of vehicles. This configuration is for performance and not tire longevity.
Chris i love cycling, i think the sport is one of the hardest. When you get to experience those roads as an amateur or a pro, all of them knows damn well these roads are some of the toughest in the calendar. This is why you get so many fans on the side of the roads, because the people who live up there know how hard it is. This is why this race is legendary. It is a highway to the cycling hell ah ah ah . I appreciate your coverage so much, i used to watch ASO tv live stream as a kid and i could not care less for it. You show is one of the best because you know what you are talking about and frankly i would love for you to have a team to manage because it would give a kick to the sport. I need other coverage that the emotion of the winner or the last kilometer without comments. You are awesome.
Luke Rowe said about tyre liners not being used. Saves a few Watts but it made any puncture to be catastrophic. Tyres immediately explode and then skating on rims as tyre comes off. No one else mentioning this 🤔
Okay, this was excellent, Chris, your mentioning all the vehicular possibilities with Wout's bike and your stories, especially. But in the peloton, are there riders who are known for being harder on their bikes than others? Not intentionally, just the way they're wired and ride? It was that way in auto racing and a funny story is the '69 Trans-Am race at Laguna Seca with Parnelli Jones in a Bud Moore-prepared Factory Ford Mustang. So Parnelli, a winner in several racing disciplines, pulled into the pits with a car problem. And when Mr. Moore asked him what was wrong, the hard-charging Parnelli offered him the shifter. 😀
This was a super fun video Chris! Love the part about not wanting to leave San Diego for Aspen. Training at elevation should offer some theoretical advantages, especially in getting oxygen to the working muscles. But you seemed to do pretty darn well training in San Diego.
....I too loved the Aspen vs San Diego monolague!!! I grew up in SD the last 13 yrs I have been living in Los Angeles (its a riding/living shit hole, but I moved for love (now she's my wife), but we can't wait to "get out"... to italy In fact I'm in San Diego right now on holiday we both fully enjoy cycling in SD, riding in peace and great weather .... no knuckleheads in jettas, enjoying the most perfect San Diego weather imaginable. today was another epic day, 60miles along the coast up to Leucadia, back to Liberty Station....tomorrow, Sunday do it again. They really got their cycling game together here in san diego Growing up here I thought this is the last place on earth that would embrace cycling/biking infrastructure .... now we hae massive bike lane coverage all over the county. the last 10 years, SD has excelled in biking support.....as you know the training here is unsurpassed ... LA likes aspen and sun valley because it's full of idiots like him, (you know what I mean) as he fits in well, that said he can stay there SD drivers are super gracious, the bike lanes are amazing, abundant and plentiful @chrishorner ... If you have not been back here since 2009, you would not recognize it, insofar as cycling. the urban planning is mindboggling.....no jetta idiots ..... well....there are the tattoo'd white trash "Zonies" that roll in but they're always drunk passed out in the sand down at the beach! 😅 I have a good training story involving Dimension Data pro (nic dougall), a couple of buddies, an Audi wagon, flat tire, happy SAG wife (she is the only one who knew how to change the tire!), being SAG'd out in a blinding blizzard at the top of Montezuma Grade (from Borrego) as we were froze in a shack with the Yeti of Anza! GOOD TIMES MAN!!! 😅
Thanks for sharing Chris and cool Volvo. But let's be real Lance was at Aspen for the same reason pros are in Teide, Spain now. Altitude helps mask something against the rules. Doesn't take anything away
A man of elegance and culture, I see! I loved my V70R. Total stealthed out Q car. Except for the high beams and turning radius. That sucked. But the rest was great 😎
Hey Chris First let me say...great show man 🤙👌 No need for apologies at all bro Glad you broke it down for the people who really aren't knowledgeable about all the possibilities involved in this tire issue and drawing the similarities with your Volvo and it's tire issue was just perfect I just hope no one is still going uhh...umm...hmmm 😂😂 Great show again 👏 👍
Chris, love the informative enthusiasm and knowledge plus your biking history and skills. Is there a basics channel or perhaps, could you, do a couple episodes on "pro cycling" for dummies? Like if you had to explain scoring, tactics and GC, the jerseys etc. to ten year olds? Greetings from Nevada City!
Probably. I had that thing at Volvo dealers all over the country and no one could figure it out in any of them. I later turned in for a new Jeep Rubicon. 👊🦋
Chris, you are the best. . great story and yes, no way to tell about what caused WVA's flat for certain. Just a shame it happened near the end when it was just the two of them. As for the 2 young guys on the road, well that kind of thing happens more occasionally. I learned to ride in Boulder in the 80's when Davis P. and Andy H. were on the 7 Eleven team. It was a lot of fun tagging on the back of the large group of mixed category riders for the Tuesday/ Thursday training rides out of North Boulder with those guys at the front. Road issues happened, but those pros and others didn't take any crap from those guys. . .Sounds like you didn't either. Great show, I look for your commentary after all the Classics etc. So different and dare I say more accurate and insightful from some of the top commentators. Keep up the great work, Chris!
I really enjoyed the story time, very interesting! As for Jumbo Visma, last Roubaix they had flats and collapsing Shimano wheels and this year they had flats while using Reserve wheels. So it seems like they still haven't figured out what the issue is. Maybe they really have to bring the cervelo endurance bikes for next year's Roubaix 😂
Chris great story and video as always. Loved the jetta story. I watch all your videos you Never mentioned the Victoria tires. Knucklehead award to anyone who thought you did. Bunkie
Oh, the rivalry between LA and AC was not lost on any of the fans in that year..Contador was downright nasty (attacking on Alpe d'Huez etc.) but in hindsight, knowing what LA was doing all that time (juicing) he could be forgiven just a little. After yesterday's video, I saw another youtuber who interviewed the mechanics about what tire pressures they were running. Nobody said anything over "4.2 bar" That's only 61 PSI! With pressures like that, anything could happen. So many ways to fail as you could easily pinch a sidewall. -- great story!
Really interesting story and nice analogy to connect to the mechanical issues as Paris Roubaix. I was a little surprised to hear that you don’t like training in Aspen as I’ve heard Aspen is a popular training hotspot for cyclists and triathletes. Of course, San Diego is arguably a better spot since you can get fantastic training routes with the amazing weather, so I can’t blame you for that. I lived in San Diego for several years and the Saturday long rides were always beyond phenomenal.
Well I’ve been informed that the photo I used was Telluride, not Aspen
My bad, I’ve never been to Colorado, I’ll be less trusting of google images in the future 😂👊

Knucklehead move there, son!
Chris, you TOTALLY need to write a book with all these great STORY TIMES! 😎
+1 on that…
Agree
Agree
I would read that book!
I would read it as well. Have it come out in early in late June or early July so we could read it to get ready for the TDF
I want more story time w Chris Horner, this is gold.
Fully agree. More of this type of content pls.

Storytime with Horner, FTW! Please add more of this to your channel!
Roger de Vlaeminck got one puncture in all his many, many, many Roubaix's. Same with Johan Museeuw, who I think only punctured in his very last Roubiax. In the Hem secteur where MvDP almost missed the corner, the spectators were standing in the tarmac section, which impeded his approach and caused him to (almost) overshoot that corner and hit the barrier. If the race organizers are going to barrier the parts the riders aren't "allowed" to ride, they should also barricade the spectators back from the sections that they ARE allowed to ride in that particular spot. I think the same corner caused another crash last year for almost the same reason.
Great story, and great storytelling, Chris. Would love to hear more stories.
Thanks for the clarification. Now I see that we agree regarding my comment on your original PR video. Something the mechanics were doing for Jumbo let them down. Luke Rowe said about tyre liners not being used. Saves a few Watts but it made any puncture to be catastrophic. Tyres immediately explode and then skating on rims as tyre comes off. No one else mentioning this 🤔
😂 Good one, Chris! I love story time! ❤️🦋👊
I absolutely love your insight on cycling 🚲
Love the infill on your car history! Got the R, good to know you like to maintain speed and endurance no matter how many tires you have on!
I grew up in SD
the last 13 yrs I have been living in Los Angeles (its a riding/living shit hole, but I moved for love (now she's my wife), but we can't wait to "get out"... to italy
In fact I'm in San Diego right now on holiday
we both fully enjoy cycling in SD, riding in peace and great weather .... no knuckleheads in jettas, enjoying the most perfect San Diego weather imaginable.
today was another epic day, 60miles along the coast up to Leucadia, back to Liberty Station....tomorrow, Sunday do it again.
They really got their cycling game together here in san diego
Growing up here I thought this is the last place on earth that would embrace cycling/biking infrastructure .... now we hae massive bike lane coverage all over the county.
the last 10 years, SD has excelled in biking support.....as you know the training here is unsurpassed ... LA likes aspen and sun valley because it's full of idiots like him, (you know what I mean) as he fits in well, that said he can stay there
SD drivers are super gracious, the bike lanes are amazing, abundant and plentiful
@chrishorner ... If you have not been back here since 2009, you would not recognize it, insofar as cycling. the urban planning is mindboggling.....no jetta idiots ..... well....there are the tattoo'd white trash "Zonies" that roll in but they're always drunk passed out in the sand down at the beach! 😅
I have a good training story involving Dimension Data pro (nic dougall), a couple of buddies, an Audi wagon, flat tire, happy SAG wife (she is the only one who knew how to change the tire!), being SAG'd out in a blinding blizzard at the top of Montezuma Grade (from Borrego) as we were froze in a shack with the Yeti of Anza!
GOOD TIMES MAN!!! 😅
I Absolutely Love your channel and commentary I learn so much … thank you!!!!
Editing is superb and compliments the great story.
Garrett has upped his game since our first videos. 👊🦋🔥
Not the Jetta mirror… (told them kids right tho)… 😂😂😂😂🙌🏽
Great story! Hope those kids starting riding bikes and are watching your channel!
That would be great. 😂👊🦋
Amazing story...thanks Chris
👍🦋
Thanks for sharing Chris and cool Volvo.
But let's be real Lance was at Aspen for the same reason pros are in Teide, Spain now. Altitude helps mask something against the rules.
Doesn't take anything away
Hi Chris, the usual amazingly succinct commentary! Seriously appreciated. Can you do some mountain bike posts?
A man of elegance and culture, I see! I loved my V70R. Total stealthed out Q car. Except for the high beams and turning radius. That sucked. But the rest was great 😎
Hey Chris
First let me say...great show man 🤙👌
No need for apologies at all bro
Glad you broke it down for the people who really aren't knowledgeable about all the possibilities involved in this tire issue and drawing the similarities with your Volvo and it's tire issue was just perfect
I just hope no one is still going uhh...umm...hmmm 😂😂
Great show again 👏 👍
Story-time with Uncle Chris - brilliant
Seriously great story telling 🎉🎉
Perhaps it was a problem related to the automatic tyre pressure system that Jumba-Visma was using.
Well that was one heck of a story,Chris! Loved it! lol!
Awesome story!!! Love it
Chris, love the informative enthusiasm and knowledge plus your biking history and skills. Is there a basics channel or perhaps, could you, do a couple episodes on "pro cycling" for dummies? Like if you had to explain scoring, tactics and GC, the jerseys etc. to ten year olds? Greetings from Nevada City!
🛞… bent rear axel… causing toe-in situation on the v70 R🏁
Probably. I had that thing at Volvo dealers all over the country and no one could figure it out in any of them. I later turned in for a new Jeep Rubicon. 👊🦋
Loved the story! Great video.
Great recap on the mechanical issues! I’ve been thinking and saying the same thing🤔🤔 I hope they can figure it all out!
Thanks, Chris. I love the image at the dealership, tossing everything, Been there, but try not to go there as I age. Cheers
🍻👊🦋
thanks for the heads up on volvos
Right. Things have changed though, the "didn't take any crap from those guys" attitude is likely to get you shot, today.
This is absolute gold.
I think I like story time more than the race coverage. Can we get more of that. Thanks Chris.
I’m willing to bet the Volvo dealer could find the issue when it’s trade-in time… Great story Chris, great work Garrett.
you need to write a book!! So many great stories.
That was a fun Giro, still sorry the tumble sent you and that good form home so early
San Diego just has endless roads to pick from. 👊🦋
