Cathy Smith gave as good as she got with Groucho, e.g., when after she felt her partner Alan's copious beard, to Groucho's plea "what about mine?", she said "yours is kind of skimpy" - a word I seldom hear. Or in her role as a trainer "I could build you up if you needed some more meat on your shoulders ... your arms ... and legs." Groucho: "If I need meat on my shoulders I'll go to a butcher shop."

It's an ethereal thing, kind of an atmosphere. People don't have any down time now, there's always some form of stimulation from technology, social media etc. Little things like being on a bus and looking out the window, less people do that now, instead they consume information and obsess about their online personna. It's creating a kind of mental disturbance in the wider population which is leading to mass insanity. That's my theory anyway.

Oh man, looking at some pictures I was like "wow", there's something to that. Then I looked at a video of part of a movie with Elvis and her eyes are a spitting image. And yes, the same voice. Even the same over-the-top syllable stressing pattern. "Cathy Smith" did seem to be acting on the show:
      ruclips.net/video/beTpo2KCSFw/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/beTpo2KCSFw/видео.html
According to some web site citing the 1956 Mr. America program, the 1950 Mr. America winner was John Farbotnik, who had a 47.5 inch chest when he won the contest in 1950. Cathy Smith claimed in 1958 her boyfriend won the 1950 Mr. America contest and she also claimed he had a 55 inch chest. Looking at the Mr. Universe statistics from 1965 through 1967 there is no one who is listed with even a 53 inch chest until Schwarzenegger in 1967 (in 1966 he had a 52 inch chest). Farbotnik would have been a real trailblazer to be using steroids, especially using them so successfully, by 1958. So I'm a little skeptical Farbotnik went from 47.5 in 1950 to 55 by 1958 without being noted for it, unless he stopped competing and went for pure girth including fat. Of course anything is possible for a former "Mr. Professional Or Something."

"Not wanting to get a beating from his wife" was just the joke. In reality I'm guessing his wife would face social embarrassment in certain circles for her husband being kissed square on the lips by a young girl like that on national television. And there's a good chance he knew the girl was an actress and not "Cathy Smith" and that it was not a spontaneous performance. (I'm convinced that another commenter is correct and "Cathy Smith" is really Joan Blackman). Anyway, we can only guess. Maybe her mouth was wet, or her lipstick was sticky. They were trying to put Packard out of business and eventually did before 1960. Then Desoto took a dump soon after. Nov 1961. The name had bad customer appeal. Too close to Dodo. Most of the woman contestants were eye candy picked from acting and modeling fronts. A public deception from the start; even worse now. What's Kissinger doing in the audience with his 2 buddies?

    • @mattmexor2882

Everyone was picked from somewhere for their interest to the show. The Eskimo because he's an Eskimo (it couldn't have been his personality). They picked people with a shtick, like the woman with the "arithmetic dog". Sometimes they have well-known people like that songwriter Cohn or like Ray Bradbury. They also had a few singers and comedians. Or just people who had quirky personalities. I don't see what's particularly deceptive or bad about picking good-looking girls. In general the good-looking girls were lovely as well. This gym manager here was probably the least interesting one.
In the beginning they did say "members of our studio audience selected..." Television was always phony I guess. It's not like it's any better today. Reality TV pretends to be real. America's Got Talent is staged. They edit things to get people's magic tricks to work, for example. I'd be surprised if the crowds have minds of their own.
