  • 1998 and one angle/pop punk surf videos had taken over the VHS surf video market. SCU Volume One was an answer to the Lack of Momentum generation and their feeble imitators in town and all over California and a nod towards the great sk8 video magazine 411 in an attempt to capture Santa Cruz surfing subculture's true essence: hardcore, eclectic, diverse, aggressive, artistic, innovative and pissed!
We open with a nuts sesh at Weasel Reef with the local pros and some old dudes that will kick you out if you try to paddle out.
Then it's on to Africa, rolling deep with Mike Tabeling, Anthony Ruffo, Josh Loya, Rat Boy Collins, Flea Virotsko, Munster Taylor, Adam Replogle, and Peter Mel.
The surf skate connection has always been a huge part of our Santa Cruz scene and we hit up Derby, mini ramps and street with Corey Chrysler, Ron Whaley, and a bunch of pros and bros!
Then it's on to the Eastside to shine some light on the less hyped side of town with the slick crew of Omar Etcheverry, Kieran Horn, Homer Henard and friends.
Next up, Randall French, founder of Surftech, talking about his then experimental surfboard technology that would shake up the industry forever. Spoiler alert: he came up with that in an attempt to make stronger surfboards for us and became hugely successful as a result., not the reverse. Don't get it twisted!!
The episode wraps up with a classic piece on savant artist Eugene Dovydaitis. Classic shit mang.
Yes, the Santa Cruz scene is diverse and eclectic. Just keep a safe distance and don't feed the animals.
