  • Alliteration aside, the Sambar truck is done and it turned out amazing, considering how it arrived stateside. I'll get more rolling clips soon.
    Shoutout to my buddy Serge for hooking us up with the GoPro, we're constantly trying to get better at this content thing.
    Thanks to the OG's for sticking around while we were kind of stagnant.

    You have done a wonderful job on the Sambar! Love the exhaust!!
    Just a little FYI- white plastic parts do not hold up well in outdoor applications such as your bumpers you printed. UV and ozone embrittles the plastic. The carbo black in black plastics usually serves as the UV inhibitor. You maybe able to buy UV/ozone resistant feeds for your 3D printer. I have really enjoyed your videos. Great content!!

      I built a battery cover out of 1/4" thick black ABS/PVC blend plastic sheet. Cut it like plywood cabinet parts on a table saw using a very sharp 10" x 60 tooth, triple chip blade. Do additional notching and nibbling on a bandsaw. Assemble with Weldon 2007 solvent bonding solution using a rabbet joint system using standard wood cabinet making strategies for assembly design. The solvent melts all the parts into one unbreakable unit. It is basically a 5 sided box with some internal spacers and a few notches to clear a few things. Put a 1/8" radius on all the edges possible with a trim router and debur all the others with a cabinet scraper. It pushes straight in and covers top, bottom, sides and outer face, looking like a simple black box. I put the plastic haircell face out so no finishing is required. It is held in place by one bolt that engages with a threaded hard point already present on the lower mid right side of the battery housing. The battery still gets covered in dirt from our local dirt roads and winter slush. Salt and ice makes its way in there too. How can it not? The cover does improve appearance and discourages tampering. I keep a little 12 mm wrench in the compartment under the passenger seat to work the bolt. Believe me, 1/4" thick ABS/PVC blend plastic is tough as hell and UV resistant too.

    RustOleum makes a good and inexpensive black Bumper & Trim spray paint that adheres well to metal or plastics. For more upscale automotive rattle can restorations, there's SEM Color Coat. "Color Coat is a specialty elastomeric coating formulated to restore or change the color of most vinyl surfaces, flexible and rigid plastics, carpet and velour. Color Coat is not a dye, but a fade resistant flexible and permanent coating."
    My Hijet has a couple of little dings but I'll forgo the dent puller and cut straight to a Bondo repair to restore the proper shape before I proceed to "paint" the entire truck with Monstliner polyurethane bed liner, which can hide a lot of minor defects.
    My truck didn't have any chains to support the tailgate or bed sides. I'm trying to decide if I'll keep it that way, or if I'll make my own version from stainless mounts and heavy duty UV resistant synthetic rope. I generally don't mind dropping the tailgate or sides completely, but having another foot of support from the tailgate would be good for transporting drywall. I can't wait to strap in the 17 foot long lake canoe. It looked goofy hilarious sticking 11 feet out the back of my Tacoma. It should be outrageously funny in the tiny Hijet.
    5:45 - My Hijet is missing a cap on the bed side rail. I was planning on pulling the other one, drawing it in FreeCAD and 3D printing replacements using black TPU filament, or I may use the harder UV cured polyurethane resin in my MSLA 3D printer for injection molded quality. Did you upload your STL file to Thingiverse so other Sambar owners can print their own parts?
    Your Raptor bed liner looks great. I plan on rolling the Monstaliner bed liner, inside and out. It doesn't have any chopped rubber. A Schott gun can produce a good texture but a coarse roller does a great job, assuming the rollers are changed often enough not to flake off into the finish, and I save a lot of time by doing much less masking. I can also roll the finish outside without concern for accidentally painting my neighbor's cars.
    Kudos on that snap-on stainless battery cover! Fabricating it from a heavy duty steam tray is genius. I just upgraded the Hijet battery to the largest battery that fits, a 35N, and I'm currently fabricating a battery cover. I have an 8"X12" sheet of aluminum I was going to use but I changed the design to use a sheet of black textured marine nylon. It'll screw on with four screws into side brackets I'm fabricating to make battery theft a bit more troublesome (I park on the street) but the top edge of the cover is scalloped downward to allow access for jumper cables.
    Congratulations on a gorgeous Sambar restoration. It looks great! Thanks again for sharing.

      I may be a little biased because it was my first truck, but the Hijet feels better overall. I feel like 3 cylinders vs 4 gets you a little more torque. Hijet feels more stable on the highway if you're crazy like me, I've taken both up to 65 mph, the subaru gets a little more sketchy at speed. Sambar has more legroom though.

    THIS IS PERFECT. Was wanting to ask, never painted a car just vinyl work, do you not need to sand before painting or is there some exeptions with certain vehicles such as a Kei Truck? Guessing it has to do with the clear coat?

    • @GreeceMonkeyz
      @GreeceMonkeyz  10 месяцев назад +1

      I've painted a kei truck in and out, but I'm still no expert. Definitely do your research. You want a good mechanical bond, so sanding is ideal. Scuffing pad at bare minimum. These kei trucks seem to be painted with single stage paint, so no clear, just a thick ol layer of glossy white.

    Nice old Sambar. I have a 2001. It was worked hard before I got it. It received some attention from the importer before I bought it in 2009.
    Your muffler sounds as if it was removed, definitely not stock. What did you select or design? Pictures in another post, please. Yours sounds very sporty to noisy. My 2001 is much quieter, but all the heat shields have disintegrated. I remade the shield over the muffler using SS rivets and galvanized steel sheet. I had a new aftermarket catalytic converter welded into the exhaust system recently. There went more crumbling heat shields. The original O2 sensor was still useable! My replacement muffler is several years old now. It was very expensive. Shipment took 4 months due to the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and ensuing Fukushima nuclear disaster.
    Nice wheels and tire selection. 14" wheels look good and the all season tires appear aggressive enough for some light off road work, but smooth riding for city and highway driving.
    Subscribed and a thumb up. Thanks.

      @@GreeceMonkeyz hello GM great videos of all your projects but I'm a Sambarian & I just ordered mine from Japan & as I watch all of the videos I can on the vehicle your ingenuity is MacGuverish. Us average joes can't weld like that & create wicked sound from the muffler.
      Can you talk more about the tires, did you raise it, if so what kit. I can't find a reasonably priced one nor have I seen any Sambar get raised on the Tube. How toos. There is one guy with a whole body lift with some rubber, not sure if that's for me. Also would coil over be a better choice & will the coil overs raise the truck 2 " any recommendations on what fits the Sambar. I'm think of 15"/6.5/35os with 185/65/15 will something like that work without lifting? Spacers, you said you used spacers but I see the factory studs are short, did you have to install longer bolts? So many questions thank you for the inspiration.

    • @GreeceMonkeyz
      @GreeceMonkeyz  Год назад +1

      @Timotaneous The half inch spacers have their own studs set into them, thats why at 10:30 into the video you see me cutting the original studs shorter so they don't stick out past the spacer and hit the back of the wheel.
      I can't really weigh in on lift kits yet as I haven't used any. This truck is stock suspension. Just had to trim the mud flaps back. You don't want to exceed a 2" lift because it will anger the drive shaft u-joint angles.
      To figure out your wheel fitment you'll want to use willtheyfit.com and plug in your numbers. Keep your overall tire diameter under about 560mm and it shouldn't rub, but don't quote me on that. Measure your wheel well to get a better idea.

    • @72mardy
      @72mardy Год назад

      The Sambar is actually a full chassis, unlike other Kei trucks. You can do a body lift very easily and not worry too much about changing the suspension. The hardest thing about the whole lift is extending the steering shaft.....which isn't that difficult.
