I know this video is 5 years old, however that's the thing about leathercraft, it's timeless. A beautiful, well made leather bag would make a terrific graduation gift. Thanks for sharing sharing your insights & invaluable advice,.like skiving edges for a professional finish. It's still being appreciated by atelier enthusiasts, like myself. Cheers
Absolutely stunning work there Harry. Your calm, measured commentary is a joy, the work is sublime and the help you give us beginners is priceless. Thank You!
Thank you for making this video. Because of multiple injuries I can no longer hand stitch. I have been wanting to see how to use the sewing machine for bags and this was very helpful.
Your timing couldn’t be better for me Harry - I’ve just got a Durkopp Adler flat bed machine and a cylinder arm machine. Thanks so much for your great videos. I’ve learnt tonnes from you.
I have been watching your videos here and there for over over a year or so, first time commenting. I really want to tell you how much your efforts are appreciated that you share your knowledge and skills to help and educated the novice. If it weren't for people such as yourself taking the time to create these lessons leather craft wouldn't be near what it is today for the knowledge would being dying like a grape left on the vine. For that I would like to say, Thank you Mr. Harry Rogers and God Bless
Hi Harry. I love your bags. I love learning how to work with leather, and you make look so easy. That bag you stitched on your machine is a very nice one indeed. Keep up with the awesome videos. Love them.
Great video, Harry. I like the idea of back-stitching at intervals when sewing the panels together to provide extra security! I work for a company making leather bags, and for turning the more difficult ones, we have a metal pole, the tip of which has been carefully smoothed, fixed vertically to the workbench. You can then use both hands on the bag while pushing against the pole to turn the bag right-side-out. If you're doing a lot of bags, it might be helpful to you, and you certainly have the skills to make something like that yourself! Nice work, and thanks for another enjoyable video!
thanks for the tip on doing extra backstops (going back a bit and forward again) in high wear areas that will stop the seamfor going up further, this will work with sewing fabric as well. i made my own fingerless gloves from fleece just before i learned of this trick, which would been good in certain areas n them. great tip. great bags you are making , i love your mentality on the quality. it is the small things that makes the difference of a great product.
Вот смотрю тебя чувак и слезы на глазах. О такой машине не то что мечтать ее даже в интернете найти невозможно. Про купить вообще молчу. У нас в стране завалено все дешевым Китаем. Таких машин не было и не будет
This is so helpful for getting an idea what my cylinder is actually able to do. Mine is only double feed, but still should be able to cope with thinner leather. I will have to improve my skills a lot, since I‘ve been only using heavy fabrics and artificial leather so far. Thanks for sharing your techniques and your knowledge, and for taking the time to put this together. Regards from Germany 🇩🇪
I truly enjoyed watching this video. And I’ve seen numerous bags made with the seams exposed. But the hidden seams are so much more attractive and professional looking. Great job from the US!
Very nice Attache Case , Watching - Harry a benefit for you on the arm machine is 2 or 4 strong laces hanging from the ceiling on a loop or swivel but at the end of your machine with clips to hold the project at a level so it can turn but hold your work they`ll twist but not alter your seams you can hold both sides of the foot .
Thank you so much for posting all of your videos! I am a beginner and all of your tips and experience is so helpful!!!! I am using a Cobra 26 cylinder arm and will be making bags and wallets soon- Thank you again!
Fantastic video! This was very insightful. I'm about to see my first leather laptop bag, and your discussion on the ways to think about bag sewing really helped.
Craftsmanship of the masters. When I put on ma leather I made, and rock to sum Metallica, Delta Parole, Foo Fighters or the Smashing Pumpkins I feel like I can do anything in the whole wide world.
@@coopersmom8339 Thanks I really like this machine for bag weight work...not suitable for much heavier in my opinion, but excellent if you want to make bags etc.
I would love to buy a pattern if you’re interested in selling. Also what’s called the bag closure accessory that you used? Thank you. Would love to see your bag collection!
Harry first time watching your tutorial. It was very interesting and you gave me some ideas for my bag. Going to look at your other tutorials. Have a nice day.
I am just learning how to use my techsew 4800 pro and am loving these videos, thanks! Could you let me know what size thread and needle you are using for this bag? I currently have a size 18 needle using #69 thread. It looks so thin compared to all my hand sewing thread! I also don’t see as many people backstitching so much. I am practicing backstitching but I miss the holes 50 percent of the time! Any tips on getting the backstitching perfect?
Thank you so much for your video, I have been sewing for 25 years.. I am goin to buy a leather sewing machine for making purse-bags-belt and wallet..What is the best Leather machine to buy?
The very first Leather Sewing I did was sewing on Blinders to Harness. The Master I was apprenticing for called me and he didn’t like waiting so I jump up and start moving as fast as I could without running. When I walked up to him he doubled over laughing, he never smiled let alone laugh so every head looked at me and then everyone was laughing. Dad gum if I hadn’t sewed that Harness to my zipper on my trousers. For ten years those guys called me Straps.
When making lined bags, a gap is left un-sewn in the lining (or maybe a pocket) through which the bag is turned inside out. Turning the bag inside out is commonly called "birthing" it.
Great work! Just ordered your shoe book and it arrives tomorrow. Was wondering if you have any downloadable patterns for your bag like this one? Thank you and have a great rest of your day!
Thank you so much for sharing your information, I’m really fascinated by these machines! Can you tell me what kind of sliver you have and the machine you use to attach brads, thanks again, your work is beautiful 😋!
dear harry, thanks for the video. very nice indeed. i hope i will do a bag in future. as you know leather is expensive. how to protect leather bag. do we just put a normal baby oil on it. what is your suggestion. could you describe how to make a bag from its design stage, template making and so on. cheers, azhar , malaysia
Hi harry very informative video I'm thinking of getting same machine. Did you have to resemble this machine yourself or was all assembled for you the reason I ask it has to upstairs in my house thanks
Seems like man who loves his job! I wonder how you'd fit in a divider panel though. I'd think outside stitching if the fabric is quite firm is the only option?
Very good vid. If you were repairing a thick leather vintage mail bag, and you wanted to sew some stitching that separated, do think the cylinder arm machine will best accomplish this? I'm in the market for a unison feed walking foot machine. I looked at a few table machines (Consew, Juki and Seiko) and I thought maybe the repairing of the leather bags could only be done on a table machine if the bag can be turned inside out? With the cylinder arm machine this does not appear as a necessity.
Beautiful work, thank you for sharing. I love the latch closure you chose. What is the weight/type of leather that you are using? I like how firm it is while still having some movement.
The D rings that hold the straps on the back look like they are sunk into a padded round support. How did you make those round pads that are riveted onto the back? They look like they make the strap holders more sturdy. Love the look of them!
Thanks...the pads cover the D ring holders and keep everything nice and flush. The D rings etc are riveted onto a strong multilayer spine piece for extra durability .
Great video. Sir, what is the presser foot (you are using, one leg) called? And, what is the edge guide called? Sources to buy? I have a juki DU 1181N like machine. I wish to sew all around the edge of the cover/case of my journal books and sew a loop and a belt for closure. How do I wrap in around the edges of the belt? Thanks

What leather did you make that bag from it looks amazing. I'm always looking for quality Pebbled veg tans
Hi it was dry milled combination veg oil tan, about 2.2mm thick.
A very nice bag Harry. Maybe a suggestion for a future video would be how you come about designing your more complex bags.
Awesome! Can't wait to work with leather. Thanks for helping to demystify it!
