  • Came across this in an old computer... originally edited and uploaded in 2018, I took it down for some reason... and since I can't remember why, I decided to upload it back again. The original clips had been recorded in the wrong aspect and the images were all stretched and distorted. I was able to correct that, and since there can never be enough "Sergei" videos, here it is again.
    Ballet: Swan Lake
    Choreographer: Marius Petipa
    Composer: Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky
    Production: Vladimir Burmeister
Dancers: Sergei Polunin, Natalia Somova, Kristina Shapran
Performance Notes: Stanislavsky Theater in Moscow, August 2014
Born in Kherson, Ukraine in 1989, Sergei Polunin / Сергей Полунин is a Russian ballet dancer. Famous for his “once every hundred years” talent, he has incredulous elevation and impeccable technique. From an early age, he displayed glorious dramatic range. Home videos of him as a small boy improvising to Pavarotti are very foretelling. At age 19, he became the youngest ever male principal dancer with London's Royal Ballet company.
Ballet gained an unprecedented new awareness when he danced in Hozier’s viral video ”Take Me To Church.” People who would never have paid any attention to ballet began to watch the tattooed phenom. He is generally attributed with bringing ballet to the modern common man. Classical, yet cutting edge, Sergei starred in Diesel’s “Make Love Not Walls” campaign and has put his mark on many other promotions.
Sergei is a much sought after model and actor. Fashion designers love his breathtaking physique and brooding good looks. He has garnered only positive reviews for his acting. His appearances include Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of the Orient Express, the biographical documentary Dancer, The White Crow, and Red Sparrow.

Is there anything more divine than the harmony between Music and balet. In my opinion the Russian balet dancers create the performance which is full of genuine feelings., grace, elegance
and artistic skills. Tthanks for enabling uš to watch it and enjoy it to the utmost.

thanks for this post, beautiful Burmeister's Swan Lake. The corps de ballet is remarkable, nice job ladies. That's what Russia is doing at his best, they can export ballerinas (and skaters) as we do in France with bottles of Champagne ! and that's what we love .....
However this version of Swan Lake is not the best for the lead male dancer, I mean not a lot of solos but it was very nice anyway with a different happy ending compared with the Petipa version !

I've seen a few extracts from this excellent production, but never the entire ballet. Polunin was in great form, technically and artistically. Schapran was delicate and poignant. Somova was a great Black Swan. My only gripe is with the costume designer for the puffy sleeves on Polunin's costume for the ballroom scene: the design destroys the line of the shoulders and neck. But, apart from that there is a great deal to like in this production. Thank you for sharing it.

That sounds like the original Bolshoi version of the score, a slight rearrangement from what is usually heard today especially in regards to the Black Swan scene...but authentic. And I love anything with an explosion in it.

This is a bit different version than I have seen before. The tempos, music order, some of the choreography, the story line, had some changes. I had seen another Bourmeister Act 3 that seemed different from this one. Still, a great production. I like Polunin. The corps de ballet was just amazing.

This performance includes much of the music in the original score as written by Tchaikovsky that is omitted in most performances today. In the 1895 revival, this music was cut, along with many repeating sequences, making the ballet much shorter. Some of the pieces were also rearranged and some even orchestrated by Riccardo Drigo from some of Tchaikovsky's piano pieces. I love the original score and am happy to see it included in this performance. This performance seems to include most of it. The only thing I don't like is the ending, which was originally a tragic one. Instead, the Soviets and now Russians turned it into a happy socialist one.

Отлично и прекрасно но на мой взгляд постановка Григоровича лучше, вся чёрная партия в его постановке "вкуснее", а такому прекрасному артисту как Полунин в этой постановке просто нечего было танцевать.
