- How to shoot Street Photography | Top Tips for better Street Photography. In this video, I offer fantastic tips to help you improve your Street Photography
Last week I headed off to London to spend 2 days in our great city shooting Street Photography. During my time in London, I spent the time creating this video just to help others improve their Street Photography.
In my video, I cover how to set up your camera and discuss at length what equipment to use. I also discuss the legal side of Street Photography and how you should conduct yourself whilst you're out and about in the public domain. More importantly, I discuss in great detail how you should ignore advice which is offered by others which could limit your creative juices. It's amazing how much poor information there is out there!
For good measure I have thrown in a few images I took in London covering Architectural & Cityscape photography.
I hope you like the video. All comments are welcome

Taking a picture and turning it in to black and white or shooting for black and white !
THIS IS THE MOST SENSIBLE THING ONE COULD SAY AND THAT IS WHAT 99% OF STREET SHOOTER DO NOT UNDERSTAND !
They are so worried to meter to the right(light) and don't get the highlights overexposed, with B/W it is sometimes a MUST, to get contrast and don't have distraction in the light parts !!!!
I just stumbled on this channel, immediately subscribed .
Very kind for all your comments. Thank you
Brilliant tips Gary, I adopt a similar approach. Candid street photography tells great stories through composition and luck. Two things I've learned; Flip screens are good for icognito shots, you look like you are messing around with the camera rather than taking pictures, and zoom lenses are brilliant if you are nervous about getting too close. Never had an issue with people either, respect, a smile and some humility go a long way 😊
Great advice Andy and it's so true about smiles and humility 👍 👍
I happened to come across this, and to everyone I say, straight forward information, no mocking about, excellently said. Take it from a one who has done these tricks since 69. Cheers mate!
Ivar Dahl Larsen thank you Ivar, very kind of you to say 👍🏻
That was excellent. It's another sign of your skill and creative talent that no genre of photography seems closed to you. Great advice and great images.
I'll take that compliment all day long. Thank you 👍🏼 👍🏼
Best example of explaining "street photography "i have ever watched. 7 minutes in and I've ticked like and added it to favourites. Recently had a day out with my son (32) doing a bit of everything from landscape to architectures to street photography ended up in harwich ! , tried to explain about the tricky well it can be sometimes art of street photography ( hes getting into photography) he had a iphone i had my olly 10 mk3. Had a great day out and im going to get him to watch this. Many thanks Gary great vlog.
Thank you, Peter. I hope he's gets something out of the video 👍
Brilliant - is the short way of putting it. Engaged and engaging no nonsense information delivered with a big sense of humor. Big respect for Gary Gough.
Very kind thank you
You did a great job in this video. I tre ake my cell phone with me as well but I'm not out n and about all the time. I live in a small town in Western Oklahoma and not much out here except storm chasing which is something I enjoy doing.
Love guys like this. Doesn't push his biases and/or preferences. Instead, he shares his experiences and passes on USABLE knowledge. Appreciated. Subbed. Thanks!
Very kind of you to say, thank you 👍👍
Love this video Gary. Excellent tips and information!
Thank you 👍
Direct and down to earth, I liked it. I'm getting back into photography, especially street and quote I always remember and that inspires me is "I photograph to see what the world looks like in photographs" said by Gary Winogrand, a famous American street photographer from the 60's-70's
Thank you. It's a great quote 👍👍👍
i am 50 and love photography but only recently bought my first DSLR as opposed to a point and shoot. I stumbled across this video and am going to give this a try, I am British but now live close to Niagara Falls in Canada where there is a plethora of subjects.. Thank you so much for this info
Oh, that's great news Simon. So glad my video has inspired you. Good luck
Confrontation became a fear for me. I used to be quite confident in street photography for years, but lately, I feel I lost that courage to continue. And in this corona time, people became more suspicious about their surroundings. Thank your for the video.
Thank you 👍👍
Your pictures are pure art (have often looked at your high quality landscape pictures/programs, now you are also the king of the streets. Thank you for bringing these RUclips shows up to a higher level, yes, you know all those Americans and Australians with their nonsense, or should I honestly say bullshit. You are a light in the dark .
I'll take that compliment all day long. That's a very kind thing to say. And it's comments like this that just make it all worthwhile 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This Brooklyn NY photographer approves this message as an incredible video and encourage all to watch...... thanks friend.
Sam Newton II - very kind of you to say. Thank you 👍🏻
That’s got to be one of the best and easiest to understand videos on photography I’ve watched. You made me want to take my camera out rather than put me off 👍
Thoroughly enjoyable and informative video. The quality of the photos are outstanding, and now I want to go out and try and capture images as good as that.
Thank you Gerard 👍
Brilliant video . The whole thing was awesome 👍😃
Cheers Paul 👍 👍
Totally agree!
As a photographer, street is probably the hardest one to learn and master, in my opinion
I agree to a certain extent. You can also just go out, point and shoot and still come away with some cracking shots. So, in that case, it can also be a very easy genre.
Difficult to master, but easy to access, so easy to practice once you master your fears.
Right On! Best advice for street photography that you will find on the internet! There Are No Rules in Street Photography, Make Your Own!
i love street photography as well , sadly i don't live in an amazing city but close to mine there is Strasbourg and it's a huge place to explore and take photos , it's really interesting to challenge yourself especially when you are not really confident or afraid cause when you are able to shoot freely without fear in the street any kind of photography start to feel even better , for exemple weddings , the first wedding i've done i was afraid of taking pictures of people , but today i was in strasbourg doing street photo for the first time and i understood many things by doing it
first: people don't really care and you should not be afraid
second: it's so much fun walking around the city , discovering new places etc
third: you can break all the rules or follow them as you wish and be even more creative than when you shoot basics portrait or in certain conditions
overall street photo is in my opinion the best to learn to be confident and stop being afraid of everything and enjoy more and more photography in general
thanks for all the advice especially about the composition and shutter speed priority that's something i'll test next time
50 years ago many people loved having their photo taken in the street. Times have changed peoples views. Amazing that you can point a camera phone at someone at they don’t bat an eyelid. Pull out a decent camera and you get a very different reaction.
Gary.....This is the BEST .....Street-Photography tutorial EVER......clear, concise, accurate, informative, brilliant !....I am as keen as you ......recently judged a Street Photography competition for a club....
Excellent video on the topic of Street Photography, best I have seen. Very thorough points on how to best approach doing this. Nice musical score as well. Thanks so very much.
Thank you, very kind of you to say 👍
Good video INFORMATIVE 👌👍😊 Thanks for sharing
@2:37 beautiful!! That is a playground for the eyes! So many lines and stories! And spot on in b&w!
Cheers
Play around and be creative!!! You said it all!!!Great video I see so many people just concerned on having prime lens, 1.2 expensive equipments, manly just finding excuses to be outside shooting
Thank you
Where have you been all this time your video on street photography is awesome what makes it so great is that it allows beginner photographers like myself to pull away from the settings and just do what you want it will work and it won’t it’s all about the experience
Very kind of you to say. Thank you 👍👍
Brilliant.... love street photography.
Thank you 👍👍
Great video Gary, lots of excellent info.
I've been a street photographer for decades and still love taking street pics. In my 70's now and still learning. I use anything and everything for street photography, film, digital, compact cameras, SLR's etc etc. Like you say, there is no one lens or camera that does the job.
I bet you've got some great tales, Chris. Glad you liked the video. Thank you 👍 👍
An engaging discussion on "Street Photography" accompanied by superb photograhic examples. All makes for compelling viewing. Many thanks for sharing your views and experiences.
Cool content and so inspire
Cheers
Love your straight to the point and low complexity style of tutoring!
Thank you
Putting out fires with Gasoline..Bowie classic..thx Gazza..just shows music can be involved with our photography..or indeed other aspects of life in general.
Classic indeed, didn't thank anyone would notice that one :) Cheers Bill
I just bought my first decent camera, a Sony Alpha 6400. I have been tying it out and learning. I really love how you spoke about this aspect of Photography as this is something i am keen to expand on. Thank you
Thank you. I hope you enjoy Street Photography. You'll get hooked if you do :)
I actually got Confronted by a Lady who was jogging by the Lake Phalen, and I was just doing a Street Photography Assignment for Minneapolis College Art Design. While in class, I've talk to my College instructor Anna Eveslage about it, she said "Good New's at least you didn't get a black eye"
Great to know your College instructor was so supportive of your efforts. She should be ashamed of her attitude. Street Photography is a great art and should be supported!
Finally. Someone who isn’t a snob about street.
Mark Cort - cheers Mark
I love street photography. Thanks for the tips!
You're welcome Michelle 👍
Street photograpy are either candid or posed. Candid can bring natural and dramatic expressions of subjects not knowing their photos are taken. Posed, you have to establish a favorable connection with your subject to have their photos taken. And like posed snapshots with grinning subjects, spontaneity and naturalness are either lacking or missing.
Any imaging contraption that can take a photo can be used in street photography. I use an old gopro even at nightime. Their high ISO grainy photos are quite dramatic in black and white. Their wide-angled photos can be cropped later for better form and composition. As long as it can produce photos, I never engross myself with equipment pros and cons or brand wars.
Great synopsis 👍🏻
I love your mindset. Thank you for this video. Totally agree with you. Use what you have and like and not what others want you to use.
Thank you
This was a superb video and informative. Chears
Thank you Andreas 👍
Excellent tips and information! !
Exceptional video Gary!
Thank you for saying, cheers
Love this vid! Love the things you say about equipment and settings. Just use the camera you like, the lens you like, the settings you like and go out and shoot. There ain't no right or wrong. Also loved the tips and telling what street photography is basically about. So many other vids try to tell us which camera to use, and oh blimey, don't use THAT lens, or tell us the 'correct' apperture. You tell it like it is, and how I (photograph for many years, but new to street photography) work. So thanks for telling me I'm on the right track!
You're welcome and thanks for taking the time to comment too. Cheers
@@GaryGough I just got back from an event (foodtruckfestival) in The Hague, and practiced. And I met another streetphotographer there, so was a great evening. And thank you for the tips!
@@KeesKouwenberg Sounded like an amazing night was had. Thank you
@@GaryGough It was. So who knows, my channel might be a The Hague street photography channel one day hahaha
A great bunch of featured images! I've had some luck doing street photography, but I think the one thing that I haven't done well is "find a composition, then wait for a subject to walk into the frame." I think I've been too impatient, and feel too conspicuous (at 6' 3" and too heavy for my own good) standing around with a camera in my hand. Thanks for the great tips Gary!
Brent Miller - I feel your pain :)
Get a small mirrorless m4/3 camera. The benefit of being big is that you are less likely to have a physical confrontation.
Great and inspiring tutorial. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you
Top job very well presented.
Thank you Norman
I love street photography myself. The candid shots you take can be amazing. Now I need to shoot more B&W.
Hope you liked the video
Nice one .... pretty much what I believe in street photography.
Thank you
Awesome video brother. Well done
MrV2u - thank you very much 👍🏻
Been wanting to get more into street photography. I shoot mainly landscapes but when I'm not in the mood for landscapes or I've photographed everything around me to death, or I just need a change of scenery, I try to do street but one of the biggest problems I run into is my eye for it. Like landscape photography, I think you gain an eye for it over time but going from landscapes to street is a jump in creativity. Street photography uses a different eye that I need to hone. The other is confidence. Having the guts to get a photo of someone without their permission hold me back a bit. I at least have a good street camera. I bought the X-T3 back in September and the small size silent shutter helps to make me more of a fly on the wall than a big, loud DSLR
Best street photography vlog I've seen bar none. I've shied away from the genre, due to nervousnss/ anxiety over so many of the issues you covered in this great video. Timely confidence boost. Thank you.
Great film as ever Gary..........6ft 4in !!! No ones going to challenge you.
Peter Dovey - I as mean as a Disney Character. Glad you liked the video 👍🏻
Such a joy to watch your video. You’re a true inspiration and I have to say, just listening to you describing everything is really enjoyable. It’s easy to comprehend and I personally feel intrigued to get out right now and follow your examples. Great video indeed. Cheers
Very kind Robert, thank you
Thanks Gary Great video lots of good tips for street photography
Mind-blown, super cool photos
Thank you
Great video, I just uploaded my latest street photography video. I used settings Manual - f8/Auto ISO - max range -800/shutter between 125 and 200 depend on subject and burst mode as I like the option of choosing the best from 4 or 5 images. No set rules just stating what I used on a sunny day in London~
Great job with excellent examples
that fade in that you did in front of the graffiti tank was a cool move..awesome video and thank you, cant wati to get back out there an take some cool pics
Channel 323 - cheers 👍🏻
So interesting and great advice.
Great images Gary love the black white👍
Gary this is the best vlog I have watched about doing street. I have tried a couple of times but never been happy with the results probably because I feel uncomfortable I end up with bad images. I am visiting a food fayre on saturday and thanks to watching your video I will give it another go. Thanks
Go for it Peter - it gets easier with time. Most people couldn't give a hoot, you'd be surprised. Good luck - Happy to take a look at them.
6ft4..... Hahaha bloody hell you can take any photo you like! Well unless the other fella is 6ft 5. Happy snapping fella great vid
lol tall and soft as a kitten but way uglier :) Glad you liked the video. Thank you
A greatly helpful and informative video. I always keep away from automatic ISO but I am going to try it, perhaps with a maximum level. Thanks.
Hi Brenda, it really doesn't matter if your ISO is high, the very nature of Street Photography is that it just doesn't need to be perfect. Go try it 👍🏼
Some cameras have ISO range limit at Auto ISO
You want some what a decent iso not to low to prevent motion blur.
Thanks for share Gary!
Thank you Jorge 👍🏻
This is something that i'd like to take further and this video has helped me a lot. There's no right and wrong, just lots of ideas and thought provoking insights - cheers!
Cheers Adam
Wow, came across this by accident. Great to watch, with straight to the point information. I started doing street photography on holiday, in the bustling cities of New York, Melbourne and London, and that gave me the confidence that if I was spotted, I’d smile and tell them they look great or very interesting. Met some great people who were more than happy to have a chat as well. Next step is having a go in my native Yorkshire! Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Thank you Maria, glad it's helped 👍🏻
Glad I stumbled across this video! I've started doing SP and it was very awkward at first. I was always scared people would challenge me. To make things easier, I now shoot in AV mode and use a nifty fifty so I am not super obvious and can get my shots in quickly. Thanks for the video
Nifty fifty in AV works for me 👍 👍
Useful information. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Great video, advice and some stunning shots. My favourite is guy on folding bike / windows
Thank you Graham 👍👍
Great video, I like how he established the framework of what it is and what it isn't and how can we embrace the ethics of street photography.
My challenge is awkward looks but I'm working on it 😃
It's a pretty hostile environment atm for street photographers.
Awesome music
Just the music? Cheers
Everything is awesome Gary.
Some fantastic B&W shots plus the Keep It Simple approach works well. Thank you.
Cheers John, very kind
Garry, well done, .... no comments, you got it right
Awesome video
Thank you Aman 👍
Gary A great video I love the way you just go out and have fun
Cheers Dandy
I would like to start with street photography and I have to say, I'm thankful to stumble on to this video. Well, broken down and most importantly fun and interesting. Thank you...
Glad you enjoyed it, cheers
I really like how vivid your color pics are !!
Very kind, thank you
You are welcome. The way you edited them is exactly how I want to do mine. Can you give us a few details on how you made them so nice? Thanks.
Thanks Gary for all these wonderful tips. I truly loved the video.
Very kind of you to say, thank you
Cool video nice
Thank you
Not tried any street photography but now i've watched this i might give it a try, love the black-and white images.
As always Gary, another fantastic vlog. Thank you.
Thank you kindly
Some if the best street photography I have seen. Excellent!
Bonsoir. A very brilliant video which is in fact a true tutorial about street photography.
Thank you Christian
Another good one Gary with lots of useful info. I find it a little intimidating to be out in the midst of the masses so I try to mitigate some of that by showing up a little early when the vendors have just finished setting up their goods at the local street markets. A little less chaotic but still plenty of interest. Cheers!
I know what you mean John. It works the other way round when you shoot in a really busy place like I did in London. It's easy to get lost in the crowd 👍
thanks. good vide. great images
Thank you Stephen 👍👍
Great video,I absolutely love the shot of the dog, brilliant.
Cheers Andy. I shot that with my fisheye lens :)
Some great tips there Gary. Your shots aren't bad either 👌
ELTIN JONES - Thank you kindly 👍🏻
Wooow, I've watched so many videos about street photography trying to understand it better but nothing was as helpful as this video. I really love challenging myself with street photography, might challenge myself to go "oi" at people then shoot
Thank you Sami for saying, you're very kind
Same here.
@@GaryGough Thank you so much for this video. Ditto to Sami's comment.
Great video, very helpful Gary...thanks
Thanks Jill
I’m really late to this video but I got so much from it. So many channels are all about self promotion or trying to monetise you tube but this is genuinely instructive and inspiring
Well done Gary. Enjoyable, informative.
Thank you, kindly 👍
Excellent stuff Gary. Thanks
Thank you 👍👍
If I listen to all the RUclips videos I would have had 20 lenses by now. Great video and commentary.
Thank you
Great tips!
Glad it was helpful!
superb video Gary... some fantastic images you got too... love the ones with all the street Food ..
Cheers Gilbert
Great video, shots and tips. Nice to see someone showcasing London. Would love to see more videos on cityscapes. Cheers for another inspirational video!
Cheers Paul.
Thanks for the tips and It’s always happy to know that somebody uses the exactly same setiings as you do on the street at the others side of the earth……...
Great minds think alike :) Thank you
So glad I came across your channel. I've been watching basic tips for street photography (just photography in general) and I found yours quite easier to follow. Nothing too technical for someone like me who does this for a hobby. Other videos can be quite intimidating. Cheers mate!
You're welcome James. Thank you for saying. All the best for 2019
Golden tips! Thanks Gary🖤
Cheers
Excellent video.
Thank you Nick
Nice one Gary! loved your explanations, hoping it inspires a few more people to get out there and start enjoying documenting this Great City ! Im off to check for or of your videos, thank you.
Beverley Santino - thank you for saying Beverley, very kind 👍🏻
