    For anyone commenting about and trying to dispute opening- here is my thread on Twitter with videos showing the magic keyboard being opened with one hand in multiple ways. Now I will post a follow up video here showing opening it with one hand, both ways and why it's designed to be opened the way I showed.
    Also, I state in the video I float my hand when drawing. I really meant to say the last angle is at just enough of an angle for someone who floats their hand to comfortably draw. If it's last angle was anything above the 130 degrees it wouldn't work out.
    So when I have it flipped I am also floating my hand, I don't rest my palm down on it. When I said the angles are solid in that flip method it was implied for how I float my hand when drawing, or how I play the touch instruments. If you rest your palm down hard it will of course begin to go down. To counter that you can hold the side. It doesn't go down for me because I don't rest down. If you rest your hand down in a heavy way the keyboard folio can be the better option for you because it locks into place when flipped. Again, a follow up video is coming.
    Also, if you are brand new to the channel please check the entire channel before assuming I only use Apple stuff.

      Cladio Juliano literally subscribed over this. you're 100% correct. Just tried opening the 2018 folio the "wrong" way and then tried it with your way. It was so much easier! The top heavy weight definitely makes sense to let the bottom fall. Awesome job!

      I totally agree with you. I wanted to cancel my order based on previous videos and then decided to give it a try and returned it back after a couple of days. But I found that all of them were wrong. I wish you made this video earlier. Another hack I may add that you can place it vertically the same way you did resting on the top edge with the camera lens and down on the keys on the 2nd row from top. It is good temporary solution for the stupid apps which are doesn’t have flexibility to rotate into landscape position.

    This review was really logical showing true accuracies. Other very popular RUclipsrs are complaining about not having function keys. However, when Apple introduced the new gestures on their trackpad a few years ago. It was clear that the function keys would no longer be necessary. Thanks for showing me and 'those other review RUclipsrs' what the functionality of a brilliant tool this cover/keyboard & trackpad really is.

    Mine just came in today and i typed this comment from the magic keyboard. I love it and do not regret buying it. Ppl complain about the lack of escape button lol. You can customize your keys in setting. I set the Globe as my escape key. Easy. They want all the desktop keys like function keys on it but complain about the weight of the keyboard. Adding more keys will make it heavier and probably bigger or even they will be forced to make the keys smaller. This is the perfect size.

    Those extra positions for laying the iPad are ingenious. Particularly the one where you laid it between the space-bar and trackpad. Literally the perfect position for me.

    Agree about the function keys. A lot of youtube reviews are dissing the “no function keys” of this keyboard but I think that people will find that that it is a necessary sacrifice

    • @DarrinLin
      @DarrinLin 4 года назад +1

      Surely necessary, but that hasn't stopped Apple from coming up with clever solutions in the past. Hope they can think of something cool for the next version of keyboard. Nothing is ever perfect but function keys would have been really nice to have. I'm surprised they didn't just add some way to access function layers by using modifiers. It's super common for many compact keyboards.

    I feel like this product has kind of neglected people who want to make visual art with the iPad(Procreate and such) but don’t want to take the iPad out of its protective case while working.
    (People who also prefer to rest their hand while drawing/painting)

    • @CladioJulianoArt
      @CladioJulianoArt  4 года назад +1

      Well that's exactly what I am and who I reviewed it for. I am both a raster artist using the pencil and a vector artist and one of the makers of ArtStudio Pro. Visual artists are also vector artists and designers who don't use the pencil for their work. I hear you on for those who rest their hand down, but if it went totally flat it would lose the keyboard anyway. No product does that. Even a Surface book when it goes flat loses the keyboard access. A large chunk of people also float their hands and don't like to work flat. It would have been cool if it could be pulled forward and had some transforming abilitly, but at the same time that would only cater to a small portion of people in the grand scheme of how the iPad Pro is used by the majority of people. For me it works out. For those who rest down on sceen the keyboard folio would work out better. The two positions lock into place so you can flip it and get those angles.

    Amazing Video Man! Just a quick question, So I know the material used catches dirt quickly and do you think I need to get a Case or Cover to cover up the edges which are being unprotected? Because I think with constant use, it’s prone to scratches on the edges?

    • @CladioJulianoArt
      @CladioJulianoArt  4 года назад +1

      Thanks! I would say it depends on where you use the machine. I had my keyboard folio for 2 years and didn't get a scratch or dent on mine, but I always kept it in a bag in its own pouch when traveling. I still travel with it in a bag. I think that's the safest way to travel with it. You could also skin it, but I'm not sure if they make a skin for the sides.

      Hi! I'm sorry I missed your comment a while ago. Just seeing it now. If you are doing art or writing with the pencil and want it to feel very close to paper, that's what Paperlike gives you. It's pretty awesome. I only use Paperlike for that feel for art. It does take away from your screens brilliance because it's matte and textured. Other than that I don't use screen protectors. I really only use Paperlike for the realistic feel. You can grab one from the link in the description. If you aren't trying to get that feel for the pencil, I reccomend no screen protector at all on iPad.

    Hey! Could you do another video explaining and showing more on the drawing setup with this keyboard and the macro keys you set up? Also I heard on another youtuber that when used in the upside down mode it goes flat when you put your palm on. Could you show more of this?

    • @CladioJulianoArt
      @CladioJulianoArt  4 года назад +2

      I am planning a follow up. For the drawing segment I had said in the video it works out great for me because I float my hand, I don't rest my hand on screen when working so when showing the flipped angles that was all shown in the context of for hand floaters. If you are someone who rests your palm and hand down on the screen, with the magic keyboard you can counter the weight of resting by holding the side of the iPad which will stop it from going down. The keyboard folio is probably the better option for those who rest down on screen for it locks into its 2 positions. The positions on the Magic Keyboard don't lock into place when flipped. I am doing a follow up going over more details soon though.

    I think you are a better artist than the iPad Pro can be for an average person..therefore you are able to overcome the negatives which I have felt using this keyboard. My fingers hit the iPad while typing which is quite annoying. I wish the angle was slightly more to accommodate people who type with straight fingers...also the trackpad is kinda small for me and I don’t have such large or long fingers either..so am guessing many would face the same issue...and even for Apple standards the keyboard costs as much as another iPad mini or almost another iPhone which is an insane amount of money for a first generation keyboard. Apple needs to correct these things and other areas going forward..

    • @CladioJulianoArt
      @CladioJulianoArt  4 года назад

      Wrong! The other way is upside down! The back of the iPad is where the camera is. You don't open it back first, It's not designed to be opened that way! It's not a laptop, it's a tablet. The iPads camera is on the back, you wouldn't open it back first. The iPad naturally sits display up, camera to the back of surface it's sitting on. It's not designed to be opened like that because it's not a clamshell design. All the weight is where the iPad is.
      A clamshell has guts and all the weight inside the base. Logiclly, with this design it does not make sense to open it that way, nor do you have to because opening it the right way is so damn easy and 10x better than trying to open it the other way. Even with the keyboard folio I always opened it keyboard first.

  • @BommeltjeNL

    There’s a difference in trying to open the cover when the keyboard is on top of the iPad or when the iPad is on top of the cover. You only showed opening it with the keyboard on top and then indeed it’s easy, because the weight of the iPad is holding that side down. If you work on your iPad, close the cover, than the iPad is on top. You don’t show that. Just a small warning to other artists: most artists like to rest their hand on the screen and in that case the floating screen is just a bit to high. A few friends of mine (digital artists) returned their magic keyboards because they didn’t like that and also because the screen wasn’t as firm. They did like the looks of the Magic keyboard, but if you have to work with it day in day out, then you better be sure if this is what you want.

      Go look at the videos i posted on twitter!! The way I demoed opening it is the proper way to open it. The iPad is a tablet! The Magic Keyboard is NOT a clamshell design. A clamshell design has all of its guts and weight in its base. The iPad carries all the weight here. The iPad is designed to sit display up, with its camera on the back of the surface its sitting on. The logical and proper way to open it is how I showed, but its even easy to open the other way. I show both ways on Twitter with one hand. However, it makes no sense to open it the other way when its SO DAMN EASY and natural to open it how i showed. I am very happy with it. I also showed multiple other angles to work with the keyboard flipped and the iPad detached. I like the natural last angle, but then I also detach and placed it on that greater angle and flip it for even more angles.

    I will say that if you are primarily taking notes with your ipad pro, the folio keyboard is superior in comparison to the magic keyboard. to get the ipad "flat" with the magic keyboard is really hacky and not a good solution whereas with the folio keyboard, you can easily fold it so the ipad is flat on the desk.

    Lol...open it with one hand when its upside-down ok, I guess that works. I could see typing on this but no way for drawing. I don't float my hand when drawing. And applying pressure on the screen is going to change the angle.

  • @DarrinLin

    Ehh... you had me until you talked about drawing. It definitely works for you, but still a deal breaker for me and a bunch of others because you are limited in the ways you can use the iPad for all the different ways people like to draw. The upside-down format is also just silly, not just because it looks dumb, but because that’s really just a hack. The keyboard was never meant to support that kind of usage, and if people rest their palms while drawing it does push down the hinge over time. I’m happy it works out for you, but I don’t think that automatically means that the early reviews should be dismissed. What you did with the Magic Keyboard was great, though, because you were creative with the way you use it and turned the shortcomings of the keyboard into productivity benefits. For me, I simply don’t want to use it that way, and I think the shortcomings are still shortcomings. Maybe eventually I’ll buy it anyway just to have it as a desktop typing accessory, but I definitely don’t see me taking this on the go to work where I do much more drawing, note taking in meetings, etc. with the Apple Pencil.

      The keyboard doesn't stop or alter you from using the iPad as a pure tablet because like I said it can be taken off whenever you want. In fact it's designed to be pulled off. Thats the point of the design. You can take it off and on whenever you want, and it has attributes that allow one to prop the machine up when detached. I like drawing with it in the case at the last angle on lap, or in the first position I showed which in that position you can rest your hand down and it doesn't move. You can even put a decent amount of pressure on it when its flipped and it doesn't just collapse right down. I've been flipping the keyboard folio like that for a long time and once you try it you will always want to access those angles. It's way more ergonomic than using the iPad totally flat on a Surface. You can also hold the side with one hand when flipped so it doesn't move at all. Also, I didn't say I dismissed the early videos. I saw some random clips and in that part I was specifically talking about how to me they made it look extremely hard to open, and extra heavy which almost had me canceling my order.
      The 12.9" iPad Pro isn't something that can be held in one hand for long periods of time. The Magic Keyboard provides different ergonomics allowing one to prop the iPad up in the ways I showed. If I still was using the 11 I would have maybe passed on it, but for the way I work, it has worked out great with the 12.9. However, my workflow isn't everyone's and thats why at the end of the video I said if you have a workflow similar to mine I can reccomend it. Nowhere in the video did I say every artist should get it lol. Also when I say artist I'm covering every aspect of my work and covering for a wide range of different kinds of creators. Graphic arts, design, illustration, music, film/video.

      @@CladioJulianoArt yeah, but if I had to take my iPad out of the case it's still an inconvenience. I also lose some protection from doing that as I lay the tablet flat on some surface (angled or not) the camera is exposed to getting damaged since the iPad no longer has a flush back without a case.. Also if it was in my bag, and the first thing I wanted to do was to draw (say in a park) I'd have to spend the extra time to open and remove it from the Smart Keyboard, then put the Smart Keyboard away somewhere, and reattach it when I'm done -- something I would never had to do with the Keyboard Folio case. This is why I think the Smart Keyboard is more of a desk/workstation accessory for creatives than a mobile one.
      The Folio Keyboard is just more versatile than the Magic Keyboard IMO. It's more mobile, and doesn't have to be placed in awkward positions to draw since it flips all the way to the back. Like I said, I'm happy you like yours so much, and it almost seems like it was made just for your usage, but I'm just posting my thoughts on why it still wouldn't work out for me. Especially with the added $150 price tag I expect it to do everything the Folio can and more. Honestly, if Apple just made it so that the hinge flipped all the way around like the Keyboard Folio I would have bought the Magic Keyboard in an instant.

      @@DarrinLin For me all those things aren't an inconvenience. When I take it off I have it in lap or slightly held up a little in the lap. I pop it back on. I don't work in parks or things like that so another reason why it works great for me. But, even if I did I would have no problem just popping it on and off because I would then take it and place it on my lap and hold it up with one hand. We just don't work anything alike and won't see it the same!

      @@DarrinLin I agree it would have been great if the hinge could go totally flat for those who would use it like that, but even with the keyboard folio I never once used it flat. I used it with the angles or took it out of the case.

      @@CladioJulianoArt Ah, I have a dedicated drawing tablet stand that I use to get a proper sturdy drawing angle at the office. But when I'm on the go, I just make do without a drawing angle. I could if I used the Smart Folio, but not having a keyboard on hand is more frustrating than losing drawing angle when I'm out at a cafe.

    I’m kind of disappointed with this direction Apple is taking. If I want a decent keyboard trackpad experience i have my MacBook Pro. My iPad is just for this unique touch first experience. I’m sure Luma Fusion and some Affinity workflows are better with keyboard, but then Final cut and desktop apps are better. Actually Affinity designer works really well with touch only interface surprisingly. I had a keyboard for my gen 2 iPad Pro, but ditched it for the 2018 one as I never used it.
    Doesn’t look like an accessory for me.

      A great tool caters to many kinds of workflow, and this adds to it. It doesn't take anything away from it. It allows one to use the tool in a verity of ways. I can't see how that can be chalked up to a bad thing. It just makes the iPad Pro more versatile as far as the direction.

    "You can open it with 1 finger" yet you are constantly using two HANDS to open and close it?

      I adjusted the angles with one hand too at some spots. It couldn't be more easy to open to me and it's literally shown. I don't even know how one could watch this video, see me opening it with one hand and say that lol. I didn't say you can adjust the angles with one finger. And I spent so much time on that? Huh?!
