- Part 1 of our series on the meanings of the 12 houses in astrology, with astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan.
At the beginning of the episode we review some basic conceptual structures that are necessary for understanding how the houses got their meanings, such as the concept of angularity, good and bad houses, and the planetary joys.
After that beginning material is out of the way, we begin by talking about the first house and what it means within the context of natal astrology, followed by the rest in zodiacal order.
We don’t really deal with the issue of house division much in this episode, since that was covered partially in a recent episode on the origins of the different forms of house division in astrology.
This is the first of a two part series, and the rest of the houses will be dealt with in part 2, which should be released sometime next month. Patrons of the podcast will get early access.
This is a followup to our previous episodes where we talked about the significations of the seven traditional planets, and the qualities and meanings of the zodiac signs, part 1 and part 2.
This was the first episode that we recorded when we got together in Denver last week to record a bunch of episodes in person in our studio.

Thank YOU for bringing the house/sign discussion to the table, it's terrible that the oversimplification of relating house I to all Aries things and so on is what's undermining the true value of astrology for many practitioners

ikr I cannot believe I ever even associated the signs with the houses, I kinda rolled with it even I found many flaws but that‘s the info I got from modern day astrologers that I believed in and trusted.
Switching to Whole Sing and separating the signs from the houses made everything so much more clear. It gives both so much more depth and meaning, it‘s truly a sad oversimplification mixing them together

My youngest has Venus in the first. The day he was born my inlaws commented how they've never seen a baby as beautiful as him (they have several kids and grandkids). Since day one we've heard nothing but how stunning he is... he's also very concerned with his appearance (can't get a fluffy tummy, my teeth are so white). It's hilarious because everyone else in our house is like "eh looks aren't everything" so we've always been a little confused where his obsession with his looks came from 🤣
I have 3 sons, one with a 0 degree Taurus (Venus ruled) my other two have Venus in their first house. Each nice looking, but the two with Venus in the first are definitely more particular about there hair and clothes being in a particular fashionable way they like. I have Taurus as the ruler of my 5th house of children. Also all 3 have Libra Moons. Libra is also ruled by Venus. It so cool how this show connections.

A truly gifted group, making a great presentation on the Houses. The explanation of the diurnal cycle, and what the Angular, Cadent and Succedent all really means, has finally helped me understand something I never thought I'd get. Basically I floundered around for years with the modern approach, sort of trying to get it, but not, and so now it's starting to make sense and come together - I can't say enough good things about these podcasts. On to part 2!

As someone who has practiced Indian astrology for 15 years this was fantastic. How the four kinds of aspects to the ascendent determine the nature of houses, and the concept of cadent and succedent houses was very beautiful.

Learning that I have most the most planets in my Cadent houses feels HUGE! Lower physical energy and more exaggerated problem solving themes (which is my literal favorite thing to do). It was also so interesting what you said about Cadent house planets developing later in life - when I was young I had a bad habit of creating problems just so I could solve them and as I'm getting older, I'm making a career as a consultant where people hire me to come in and help them with whatever obstacles they're facing. Thank you so much for the abundance of high quality content you guys create. So valuable!

What a pleasant reunion of you three and to see you three in person in your studio. Have started seeing Chris Brennen:s Astrological Podcast since 2016 or 2017.Then some time during the Peak of the COVID pandemic I lost the touch with your channel and even lost my habit of watching your episodes.And later came to know that Kelly had moved to Belgium. But still you were getting together in some episodes via Zoom. Then I lost track of you all for the last 1 -1½ years..and now as pleasant surprise I see you all three together. For me you three are the three real CORE team members, I feel. A few weeks ago when I restarted my habit of watching The Astrological Podcast I could see some new faces with Chris being the only familiar face. Really missed the episodes with you three discussing and giving your opinion.. and now suddenly seeing you all three together not in s Zoom meeting but in a real face to face meeting ! Just started listening to this podcast and am loving it, thank you so much for sharing! I am new to studying astrology, but I have done lots of research into ‘the nature of reality’ over the years and also had a Kundalini awakening experience in 2013 where I feel I had an opportunity to learn even more about it, with lots of lucid dreaming at the time (dreams that we either are already awake or become awake/conscious in!) I’d like to share that I truly believe that astrology is not just something that describes or ‘imbues’ us with certain traits or experiences... but that it’s more the other way around... that because we are ‘eternal’ sparks of Light, that we in fact existed first, eternally CoCreating our ‘lives’ or unique realities, vibrationally, as everything is energy! and that we actually only appear to manifest our lives, which are simply the vibrations that we are projecting, like a movie or even a dream, which we create in the same way each night! and its these projected vibrations that are what align us to the matching infinite numbers of parallel universes that are already in existence as everything truly is ‘here and now’, in this one and only moment... the past, the present and the future! Our realities are only the mirrors reflecting back to us these vibrations in order for us to see them and to ‘heal’ them within us, with our awareness/unconditional love! Everything and everyone in our lives is truly ‘about us’.. we really are the centres of our universes! Our natal charts are the mirrors of the unique vibrations that our Souls were projecting on our ‘Birthdays’! Studying these forever cycling planetary energies through astrology in my opinion helps us to see and to understand what we are in fact simply projecting these lives... and helps us to become more aware of how we can heal our traumas carried over from one life to the next by first becoming aware of them! and no worries if we don’t the first time around, as everything is forever cycling, from the planets to our very electrons! I even experienced to my surprise, in lucid dreaming, my ‘energetic or astral body’ naturally start to spin, counterclockwise, when I ‘surrender’! In conclusion, we simply need to remain ‘present’, our natural state of being, where the lower energies and stuck traumas are naturally transmuted back into Light, as this is when we naturally rise closer to our already naturally highest vibration of unconditional love, each time that they are ‘cleared’ through our Awareness/unconditional love... I feel that this life is not about trying to change anything or anyone (they are only the mirrors to show us what we are in fact projecting vibrationally!) as Ghandi said, it’s about ‘being’ the change we wish to see in the world!
I’ve been thinking about how you guys explained that the 1st house is where Mercury has its joy... and what don’t we enjoy more than learning about ourSelves! I really feel that that’s what we’re here to do, to evolve through ‘awareness’ Itself! I wanted to mention that the only planet (or asteroid really!) that I have in the first house is Lilith, and that Kundalini happened spontaneously for me in the year when my ‘progressed Lilith’ was exactly conjunct my ascendant! Lilith is of course a representation of the dark feminine creative energies going back to Eve, and even some say before Eve as she was Adam’s first wife! I also feel that the Dark ultimately comes from the Light, Eve coming from the rib of Adam... and that for eons there was only the Light until It began furthering It’s evolution through ‘creatively’ becoming able to see Itself from the many different ‘perspectives’... each of us unique ‘perspectives’ being Parts of the Whole, with the Whole being more than the sum of Its Parts!
Ok one more comment regarding the dark creative energies... when I use the ‘whole sign’ technique, my natal Lilith is the only planet in the 2nd house, and makes sense to me too... lots of bullying in life and extremely challenging to simply enjoy what I have... but I do feel that wherever Lilith is in our charts is the place where we can overcome our ‘darkest’ or scariest challenges and find our greatest power as no one and nothing can ever take it... I learned that dark energy is not connected to ‘Source’ like we are and that’s why it is vampiric... and that it needs our ‘attention’ to get our energy, and I simply do my best to choose carefully what thoughts or feelings or people to focus on, as this energy can come through anything and anyone, and for the most part just stay present and turn ‘within’ and empower mySelf instead, and try to spend my time doing only what Inspires me! Sorry about the ‘novel’... just very passionate about sharing these things which I’ve found so helpful for myself!
I am so grateful for this, infinite thank yous. This has helped me understamd something that had me stuck for months. I had been trying to make the recent modern approach of house meanings by zodiac sign starting from aries in first, and I just could never make that fit. Taking that approach off the table has opened everything up for me in understanding.

Lol, I am 73, got interested in astrology when I was around 20. Back when there were no computers, ha! Lost me because of the math, I kept making errors. Oh if only I had all of this under my belt years ago. But I come back with intensity over and over and in the past 4 or 5 years, crazy loving it. Excellent! Fun and informative. I've found that the rising sign can also indicate the birth conditions. My son was Capricorn rising. He was born in a military hospital and he was wisked away to the nursery before his mother even saw him.

This is a well-packed podcast just there is one thing i would mention. In my belief a discussion can be in it's best quality if a person can just say something without being interrupted. The only reason this was really hard to listen to because of Kelly just constantly chipping in to Austin with her "yeah's" or other disruptive words/phrases which either repeat what is just said by Austin or simply don't say much. I found it always interrupting with my ability to concentrate. My apologies if my Mars in Gemini went out too sharp.
I noticed this too! Finishing other people's sentences and interrupting CAN be a symptom of attention deficit disorder but could also be some of her placements like some Aries or some virgo maybe? haha

That’s very different than talking over someone in a manner of elevating themselves. Not that you said that, but that would be how I would see something irritating in this scenario. Yes I agree. But My saturn sextile also says my excitement isn't more important than people finishing their sentences. Multiple commentors have mentioned it. I'm from a culture (African American) where people talk over each other and a lot of feedback is expected in conversation. But, for many people, overlapping speaking during what is essentially a class lecture can be distracting. It was fine for you and for me, but think of others.

Thank you for sharing this! As a tarot reader, I recently started to incorporate astrology within my tarot practice. And it has been a game changer at many levels.
I've been working with the golden dawn's astrological correspondences which is primarily used in the Thoth tarot. I'm bringing in the golden dawn's correspondences into the Rider Waite Smith system to delve deeper into my readings. It has been a great experience to learn from.
Also I began working with the "Unified Esoteric Tarot" where the creator has spent decades creating his own tarot system that uses astrology, alchemy and the tree of life within the arcanum. All fascinating! And breaking down the houses is something that I'm trying to learn more about. SO MUCH to focus on to say the least. 🌙 ✨ 🌹

That exact scene played out with my first child. Got her home from the hospital, laid her down in her new house for the first time. I literally said to her mother, "OK, what now?" and before she could answer, the wailing began.
