Plus he came up with the completely different riff during the chorus, and he came up with the completely different guitar solo, which is more than a lot of the other bands did when using the riff in a song.

Nirvana's version compared to the rest just happened to have the right amount of genius. Slowing down the riff and opening the melody was the key. In order of versions best to least for me would be: Nirvana The Damned Killing Joke Garden of Delight
The riff doesn't sound exactly like Come As You Are so I don't think Nirvana 'ripped it off' but they do have similar vibes. Garden of Delight and Killing Joke definitely took the riff from The Damned though. And in my opinion, I think Killing Joke did it the best.

This was released before "Come As You Are", there are a bunch of other songs that also use the same riff and were released before Nirvana's song, such as "Eighties" by The Killing Joke and "Life Goes On" by The Damned. So it was actually Kurt who stole the riff.

The riff doesn't sound exactly like Come As You Are so I don't think Nirvana 'ripped it off' but they do have similar vibes.
Garden of Delight and Killing Joke definitely took the riff from The Damned though. And in my opinion, I think Killing Joke did it the best.
