When you laser cut aluminum it leaves a bit of slag around the part almost like its been plasma cut. Its not as clean as CNC router or waterjet but it is waaayyyyy quicker and cheaper. In some cases aluminum laser cut parts can be sent out for deburring.

I just flew in with allegiant airlines from Florida to Indiana and we wondered why they don’t board the back of the plane first and then work their way forward. That seems to be even easier because when you’re a family traveling together, you want to stay together
Window first, middle then isle - finally! It’s logical. How many times have I been sitting in the isle seat only to get up twice as the window and middle trickle in. In only took decades for someone to think this up?!
Myth Busters proved the window / middle / aisle boarding was quicker. But, to speed it up even more CHARGE for carry on not checked bags. When it costs money to carry on fewer people will do it.
I'd rather they just have one free checked bag. When you charge for checked bags, many people bring those bags as carry-ons crouding the inside of the plane.

No, putting luggage up takes all of 5-15 seconds. Spirit and Frontier charge for carry-on and they charge less for checked bags. But their bag check line is half an hour long. Not worth it. You cant seat only windows first because many people buy tickets in the same row with family. The they all have to board separately. The problem is they need to board zone 4 first not zone 1. Literally the worst possible way to board is from the door back. You should board from the back forward.
Avionics should have automatic runway sensors that give a green light or red flashing light warning u don’t have approval. Can be sent to aircraft via secure txt almost like a ifr pickup idk 🤷♂️
I hope they sort it out . I hope just paid for an IO360 and Hartzell prop for my RV7 project. It’s going to really hurt if they do not honor the money given to them . I’ve supported Vans for 30 years and building number 4
Problem with boarding aft first is the pax throw their bag in the first open bins filling up the front bins first, total cluster as the last pax board and the only bins left are in the aft. It's been tried before and didn't work then, wont work now.

Greed and arrogance. The old fart that designed this airplane decades ago has been a braggart ever since. Some of his builders are boot lickers, dumb enough to think that the cracks in the factory furnished parts are small and will be ok. Historically the structures will need to be inspected and signed off for flight, and not at the discretion of the first time builder's anticipation for high performance flight. An aircraft is subject to vibration, which aggravates sharp edges and if cracks are present makes them bigger until parts fail and components even fall off. I cannot believe the cavalier attitude towards junk parts!
A cash flow issue is the symptom, not the cause. If one takes a page from Tesla, if a manufacturer is not driving costs down 2 or 3% every quarter, the bloat will soon put them out of business.

@@TakingOff Yes. In order to keep up with demand, Vans outsourced some parts to 3rd party vendors who used lasers to cut the holes. Not all parts in every kit are affected. Vans did testing to see if laser cut parts could safely be used. Most of them were deemed acceptable for use. Vans recommended some for replacement. In many cases when tested to failure, the laser cut parts developed cracks in areas other than the dimpled holes. My RV-14A wing kit has about 80 laser cut parts in it. Not sure if or when Vans will replace them.
As to the least impactful bit of news (Boarding window seat first): Yes this will most definitely save time for boarding. Calculations have been done on this years ago and I believe found Windows first, then Middles, then Isle seats, is mathematically the faster (if not perfect). Now limitation of baggage space can be an issue, but could be mitigated by enforcement of existing policies on carry on baggage limits.

Boarding my window, centre etc will make no difference as the average self absorbed air traveller will stand in the aisle anyway and take an age to stow bags, take off coats etc. You can’t trust passengers to board in zone order, it’s just a melee. Imagine what it’ll be like trying to get them by seat location.

The chapter 11 filing isn’t a good sign. In the announcement the only thing Van said was that all deposits will be honored if you agree to higher prices. Nothing was promised like replacing defective parts or refunding deposits.
The key question for Van’s is, how much is the cost increase. If 10%, not a problem. If the price triples, it is a big deal. Latest I read was a 32% increase. Which sounds like $15k to $30k. That isn’t trivial. But builders are over a barrel since if they don’t agree to the price increase, they lose their deposit. Tough position for a builder to be in.
Richard was a friend of mine. But he was a co-worker and very close with all the people at AOPA-- they loved him. Its an incredibly painful situation for them. They've done a beautiful tribute to him as well as a bunch of other stuff... so not sure where your claim they've "barely acknowledged" he was on the plane comes from.
When has Boeing EVER been on time and on budget? This was never going to happen because they can't stick to any budget... Really hoping Vans can figure this out and stay in business.
The fact that there is actually a charge category of “felony criminal mischief” says all you need to know about our broken legal system. The Indian fellow will get a strong verbal lashing, change locations and everything will be forgiven. His pay will not be tracked nor garnished to fix the damaged aircraft and he will receive no mandatory civic duty hours. He will then be free to go airport to airport to sabotage other aircraft. The proper solution of immediately suspending his work visa and escorting him onto an aircraft for immediate return to his home country will never be considered.
Vans has a very inefficient business model. Cnc cutting every sheet on machines that are worth $200/hr and require constant setup, etc. is just not that efficient. Its not mass production its like prototype production. They should have had a computer program to adjust their kit prices based on component price changes. Fixed %. And also should totally discontinue older kits like the 3,4,6. Focus only on the 7,8,9,10. Adding more designs to an inefficient model makes it worse, not better. Somehow Rans seems to have figured it out. Probably very low complexity helps.
Best idea I have seen is Vans offering an IPO. They first need to sort the numbers out but there is interest in buying stock and I think it would be a good deal all ways around.
I tend to be opposed to IPOs for companies like this. Most investors/investment firms tend to favor short term gains over long term stability. Finding other private investors who understand the aviation industry, especially the kit aircraft industry, would be a far better option.

@@louissanderson719 I think the news reporting was incorrect regarding the student pilot in question. He had indeed solo, to the point that we was authorized to fly solo crosscountry. He messed up by flying into cloud and declaring an emergency. While the rumors are there but the student pilot is a part of a cadet program from an Indian airline. All the cadets were solo and he was the only person that was stopped from flying.
The most dangerous thing in aviation is an active runway. Crossing active runways gets 150% of my attention! One thing we do in Memphis is to cross runways with taxi lights and turn off lights on. If we are taxiing down a runway, same thing. If we are taking off, then EVERYTHING is on. This makes it real easy to tell if someone is on the takeoff roll....

The ENTIRE problem with ALL of GA (VANS included) is GREED and politics. Until those two things change, I feel that GA is going to be down the road of extinction. Three things come in mind- 1- When the cost of a used airplane is more than a house and 2- the hourly cost to RENT an airplane is more than a MONTHLY car payment and 3- when you are required to use a CERTIFIED part when the term CERTIFIED does not mean a damn thing (who is accountable if the high price for a CERTIFIED part fails? no one) , aviation is doomed. Just my two cents worth- these three things cover the GREED and the politics that are destroying GA. I hope this new FAA head has his HEAD out of his rear end, and the rear ends of the politicians in order to make significant, meaningful changes. If I am off base on the certified part issue please educate me! I am on the understanding that the term certified is just a title and means literally nothing as to the quality control of the part and doesn't hold anyone accountable if the part has issues. If that is truly the case , how the heck does this happen???

Vans is finished. They do not have the capital to replace parts and I’m doubtful they’ll get it. Builders of affected kits are hosed.

The hit sounds more serious than non pilot pull fire handel's and later complied. Why are pilots and ATC not arrested.

The ENTIRE problem with ALL of GA (VANS included) is GREED and politics. Until those two things change, I feel that GA is going to be down the road of extinction. Three things come in mind- 1- When the cost of a used airplane is more than a house and 2- the hourly cost to RENT an airplane is more than a MONTHLY car payment and 3- when you are required to use a CERTIFIED part when the term CERTIFIED does not mean a damn thing (who is accountable if the high price for a CERTIFIED part fails? no one) , aviation is doomed. Just my two cents worth- these three things cover the GREED and the politics that are destroying GA. I hope this new FAA head has his HEAD out of his rear end, and the rear ends of the politicians in order to make significant, meaningful changes.
If I am off base on the certified part issue please educate me! I am on the understanding that the term certified is just a title and means literally nothing as to the quality control of the part and doesn't hold anyone accountable if the part has issues. If that is truly the case , how the heck does this happen???
