When I was a kid I got a subscription to RC Car Action magazine. They did a reader's ride of the month article. One of the first ones I read was a guy who scratch built this same style bat mobile out of brass tubing and bass wood. Everything was hand made. The chassis was all tubular soldered together and the whole body was wood sanded, bent, glued and then painted to perfection. It was mind blowing as a kid to see someone that capable. The most remarkable rc creation I have ever seen.
I think I know the one you're talking about, around 1990-91? It was built by a guy near me (and Matt, for that matter), from Guelph Ontario, Canada, and featured a ducted fan engine. Crazy creation! ❤
You should start doing reviews like this on old RC cars that would be awesome. Just like Doug DeMuro does reviews on old cars. I would love to see reviews on old tycos, radio shock RC’s etc. That would be a fun!
There's no BEC (hence the receiver battery holder), and the resistor pack and heatsink are for the mechanical speed controller. Very cool though. And the long antenna is due to the frequency of the radio. The higher the frequency, the shorter the antenna.
Awesome. I remember when they started using electronic speed controls. No more runaway cars. Brushless, and 6S. Let's see how fast Batman can really go.😂
I am a fan of the ‘66 era batmobile. I have a collection of various batmobiles throughout the eras from the earliest to the latest but mostly’66. When I was a kid, my dad took me to the George Barris auction where one of ‘66 movie cars was actioned off.
Very cool to see you geeking out over that old Batmobile. I was 16 when the movie came out (saw it in the theater), and remember seeing the tv commercial for the Batmobile RC car. It seems reasonably well made for a car of that period, that straddles the line between toy grade and hobby grade. It's basically 1979 pan car technology. Hobby grade RC cars were getting pretty advanced by 1989. I ran a Novak ESC in my RPS/Yokomo SE 4wd racer in 1986 (replacing the rheostat type MSC that the kit came with), and was running a large aluminum cased Airtronics ESC in my Tamiya Frog (in place of the original MSC) before that. Still have the Yokomo. Sold the Frog to my cousin in 1989... Your Battmobile didn't have a BEC. The radio was ran on 4.8-6V from the quad AA receiver pack mounted on the rear of the chassis. That white ceramic block (with wires) mounted above the motor is part of the 3 speed resister type MSC system. The servo driven wiper switch on that printed circuit board switched between two levels of resistance, and straight through. Yes they got HOT! I strongly suggest NOT removing the wheels, but rather replacing the foams. Cut the old ones off and glue new foams in place. Great job as always Matt. With a dry-cool wit like that you can be an action hero!
I was 12 years old in 1989 and I desperately wanted this RC! I think I saw it in a Sharper Image catalog and it looked glorious. Seeing it today though, it doesn’t hold up to child me’s imagination.
I was 12 in 1992 and i do remember seeing this in the caraction ads. There was a hobby shop next to a comic book store at one time one of those stores had the bat car on display
Nice find ! The steering blocks are Associated 12L / 12i . Advanced Engineering made a generic chassis and aluminum wheels back in the mid 80’s . Maybe not the same company but they ran a lot of ads in RCCA Magazine .
Super cool! I'm excited for the build video. Hey man just like you're doing with the receiver box, you should manipulate some 2.4G equipment into the old transmitter. 😎🤙🏽
I haven’t seen one of those for a long time, you could put some modern electronics in it and make it actually run. I remember the old tyco rc’s and the radio shack rc’s, I have aToyota xtra cab rc from RadioShack my mom got my dad before I was born. It doesn’t work anymore, but I’m going to put a trx4m chassis underneath it to make it work again.
I remember seeing these in RCCA back in the day. I believe the radio equipment was made by HiTec. That is a very cool find. This car and Michael Keaton were the best Batman rendition in my opinion.
I have one of these. I am currently prepping it for a toy fair, this weekend. This Batmobile is almost too fast. I absolutely love it. The controller is heavy as hell, lol. The antenna is as long as Jokers Pistol Barrel. I took it on walks with my wife and son and it’s a head turner. Thanks for the review. Not many collectors and RC nuts know about this rig. 🙏🙏🙏
"My parents are dead"! Poor Bruce! 😅 Hey, great find and really like the progress on the build. Should have saved yourself a lot of work and had the chassis parts bead blasted. Can't wait to see some more progress, looking forward to the airbrush work!
Big Batman fan. Have been since I was like 4(born in 85). I had to learn how to tie my shoes to get the cool batman converse. The original movie cars were actually built on 87/88 Caprice cop car chassis. Most replicas are built on Corvette chassis This is definitely awesome. The "vintage" RC I'm currently trying to make work is a Jesse James " 1/6 scale" 40 ford, with the functioning "hydraulics" Ideally I would use redcat lowrider chassis, but I'm probably just going to use 2wd short course slash.
That's pretty sweet. I love how old school it is that the electronics have a separate battery. When I was a kid I had a Sears Lobo III. It took a 7.2 volt nicad battery with a tamiya connector and a 9 volt for the electronics. I loved that car so much. I took it with me everywhere. It was kinda Batmobile like in the styling. Cool video man. I love hearing about obscure cars like this.
You should start doing reviews like this on old RC cars that would be awesome. Just like Doug DeMuro does reviews on old cars. I would love to see reviews on old tycos, radio shack RC’s etc. That would be a fun channel.
I owned one of these in 90. Had the light kit as well, but didn't get the "shields " case. It was different, but very cool. Sold it years later for a very healthy profit. Wish I wouldn't have now.
I have 2 of these! One is completely original, the other I used the body and made a custom stretched drift chassis :) got them both for under $200 each with radio
Wow. I've never seen one of these. Amazing late 80s tech. You can always get a pair of c-ring pliers if you want to go for it with those wheels (yes, I know even with pliers, they can be a pain to get off and put back on). Might be able to find a replacement Mabuchi brushless motor since that one is less than optimal (that's if you want to keep a bit of the nostalgia factor in the car).
Yes I have one with remote too. Its basically brand new. I also have a converted Tyco 1/6 Tumbler that now has function dual wheel steering, modern led lighting and its brushless w/esc.
The chassis is a stretcht 1/12 pancar. Rear pod is maybe a Parma. Later Parma came with a Ford cupé hot rod. It looks like the same build up. The battery pack is 6V and it has no BEC. Recivers with BEC did start be more common about that time. When I started at Kyosho Sweden 1996 all Hitec stuff had BEC.
Nice old RC stuff. Batmobile! I remember this and seeing it in a hobby shop. Looking forward to this build. Quick old guy note: Math is difficult when trying to figure out how long it’s been. Tip: Figure out how old you were in 89 and subtract your current age to easily calculate how many years ago it was. I’m old and still think the 70s were 30 years ago until I do the math.
That’s an awesome find! Always interesting to see how things were done back in the day. With that running gear I bet it was an expensive rc when it came out.
Heath Ledgers was absolutely terrifying, Nicholson was incredibly entertaining and Hamal really made the character feel human. Heath is the most powerful performance as of yet.
Love that Batmobile! I would guess that second power switch spot would have been for the aftermarket light kit on/off. For the next episode i would love to see how that bat body would fit on other modern on road or drift chassis. Great episode BatMatt!
This is great! I love it. I agree this is the best Batmobile ever. This is also my all-time favorite Batman movie, Michael Keaton is the best Batman, and Jack Nicholson is the best Joker ever. And this old RC car brings back memories of the way toys used to be made. Looking forward to episode 2.
The transmitter is a Hitec 260. That's what it was here in Sweden. The wheel that slipping, is the center screw that's loose. Remove the black centrer and thighten it. 🇸🇪🤘😎🤘🏁
The wheels on the 89 were dark bronze. The car you showed was an exhibition car from batman returns era. The car was redone in mostly black for returns.
I remember seeing that rc Batmobile at the hobby shop I used to go to. back in 1989 in Chicago! And yup! It was expensive for the day! I remember seeing it going for around $400 bucks back then. Actually the chassis they used for that Batmobile was a Chevy Impala! They even used the v8 engine!
That’s awesome! The one RC I wish I still had as a kid was a Christmas present in 1994/1995 was my Viper. And it was the tv show Viper so a silver coup with the moon windows. Probably Tyco or Nikko from Kmart but still. Awesome score bud 🤌🏻 Edit: just a thought but could you print a sort of ring that slips over the servo from the back and use it as a backer to sandwich the original bracket? It’d eliminate the need for screws/nuts. Just an idea.
"Let me tell you about this guy named Jack. Mean kid, bad seed, hurt people." "I like him already" "Tell me something my friend. Have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight?" Jack Nicholson was best Joker 🤘I'm curious to see how Batmobile upgrade will turn out.

thats cool 💯 the wheels look like they have a built in shaft, poop of the c-clips on the inside of those hub peices i reckon , cant wait to see it up and running with new electrics💯
This is a typical pac car from the 80s. If the servos are Hitec, then the receiver and transmitter are also Hitec. The axles and hubs look a lot like Associated or Bolink. So you could theoretically replace them if need be. Edit: the transmitter is a Hitec Challanger 260.
I remember seeing the ads for this in RC Car Action. I wanted one, but at the same time didn't because it wasn't based on an actual chassis. Also the original cars for the movie were built on Impala chassis. (I just learned that because Adam Savage just did a video on a 1/6 scale 89 Batmobile)
My local RC shop had this car on display back in 92 for AU$700. I bought the top of the line 1/8th Kyosho Inferno kit for AU$350 for comparison. Wish I had the money for it back then as I was/am a big (89) Batman fan. 🇦🇺
It's almost like a high performance pan car. Looks like they used actual hobby grade components (foam tires, Mabuchi motor, standard 1/10th scale Hitec servos and probably an unbranded Hitec radio system ) that can be upgraded using moden electronics without too much effort. An RC like this back then would ALMOST be like what an Armma RTR is today.
I have one I still need to restore! Fortunately, mine is in a little better shape than yours. You can see it on the shelf behind me on my last video. Weird RCs are my favorite!!! Great episode as usual!👍👍👍👍👍👍
I remember these. Never felt the need to pay an inflated price for it. Wouldn't mind having one though. It's definitely not 1/10 scale. 1/12 is about 22" or 23" long.
I enjoy your channel. But next time, dont use big fancy words, lol... Extruded aluminum, no, my friend, just rolled out sheet stock material. Lol as a fre already mentioned, the resistor is the voltage and current drop for the 3 speeds f&r.. the front spindles are from 1/12th scale RC-12 pan cars. The BEC is no in that mechanical speed controller, as you can see the 4 pack AA battery holder. But, other then thr corrections needed, the videography and lighting to showcase flawlessly thr detail of this vintage model, was amazing work!!! Good job!!!
I have a body from one of these that I picked up at a garage sale many years ago. It's missing a section of the roof/rear hump as it trails down to the rear fins/wings. One of these days I'll get it out and print a new section to graft into it. I think someone tried to put it on a gas powered RC at some point, thus the reason for the crude hole cut in it.
TLDR - this car does not have a BEC. The heat sink is for the MSC, mechanical speed controller. Full throttle was basically a direct link to the battery and partial throttle meant whatever power that was not sent to the motor was radiated away as heat. BEC stands for battery eliminator circuit. Let's think about what those words actually mean. Hint - That 4 AA battery holder in the back powering the receiver would not be there if it had a BEC. A BEC would eliminate the need to use a seperate battery to power the electronics. It would use the main battery that powers the drive motor.

If mine I would've left that chassis intact, put it to one side and used a cheap modern 2wd chassis extended to fit the body!
lol'd @ "MY PARENTS ARE DED!"
I hope when you make the battery door you put a Batman logo in it. I’d also print the logo in glow in the dark filament. 🤓
Not really a Batfan, but the “my parents are dead” comment made me laugh hard enough I crashed into the door of a gladiator 😩😂
I love the real car fuse in it lol
I enjoy your channel. But next time, dont use big fancy words, lol... Extruded aluminum, no, my friend, just rolled out sheet stock material. Lol as a fre already mentioned, the resistor is the voltage and current drop for the 3 speeds f&r.. the front spindles are from 1/12th scale RC-12 pan cars. The BEC is no in that mechanical speed controller, as you can see the 4 pack AA battery holder. But, other then thr corrections needed, the videography and lighting to showcase flawlessly thr detail of this vintage model, was amazing work!!! Good job!!!
I think im going to have to scrach build one of these. I loved this car when i was a kid.
Go for it!
Sounds like a fun project!
This is the kind of toy that my parents made sure I didn’t even know about.
Yeah, did you miss the part where I said I didn’t know how electronics work? 😂 In all seriousness, thanks for the breakdown!
The Returns Batmobile may have had black wheels. The 89 did not.
That's pretty cool I like batman I seen all the movies 🎬 except the animated series...
Love the Content!!
Thank you!
I wonder if you could put an EDF in the rear and open up the big side intakes to provide it with air. 🤔
HA!
