Then we find out there are in fact some Chozo who are warlike and power-hungry, which makes them as flawed and nuanced as any other race.
Yeah. But the thing I liked the most is that Samus speaking Chozo also reminds us that Samus isn't a normal human, raised in a human society. She was raised by the Chozo after being orphaned as basically little more than a toddler. Also, look at how relaxed Samus seemed to be after seeing Quiet Robe do that greeting gesture (I think that, had it been something other than a friendly Chozo, she'd have stood up immediately). Samus grew up on Zebes alongside the Chozo.

The fact that these are her first words in the saga (we don't talk about Other M; It's non-canon), in the language of the species that brought her up, is one helluva reveal. It's very well done, and it shows her as less of a silent protagonist, and more of a woman of few words.

Most beings she encounters immediately engage in violence and many of them are barely sentient, if at all. Perhaps she just doesn't talk aloud to herself? Maybe she is chattier with friends? They did injected Samus with their DNA In order to survive the planet's harsh conditions which could allow to speak Chozo.
@Jaeger19Ultima But it isn't Maridia. It's Lower Brinstar, Red Soil. Yes, other Metroid games used it for their underwater levels but it originated in Super Metroid as Lower Brinstar.
I was barely a Metroid fan. I had only played Prime which I enjoyed, and Super Metroid a few months before Dread dropped. This scene man.....GOD its so good. The music fits perfectly with the tone, and Samus in an AWESOME moment reassuring that she will put a stop to Raven Beaks plans. Dread was an experience man....I now understand the Metroid fans. This series is super sick
I desperately want a cut of this where he shows up for his exposition and after the pause, Samus just replies in English that she didn't get any of that
I like to imagine that the whole time QR is speaking samus is standing there like “how tf do I speak chozo again?” And finally remembers halfway through his monologue.
I love the details this has in it. The choso would of course have their own language and it shows Samus that of course she can speak it since she was raised by magic space birds. This game was perfect at fleshing out magic space bird lore. For the longest time we thought they were peaceful but turns out not all were. The word "tribes" is very specific because it means there were multiple cultures of chozo rather than just one intergalactic peaceful space bird group. And nearly all of them are incredibly smart, even a warrior tribe like Raven Beak's is smart enough to contain the nearly unstoppable X parasite without Metroids and hack the E.M.M.I
I remember hearing this and I thought my game was set to the wrong language for some reason, and only after restarting the game did my dad suggest she is speaking the chozo language
@@thatloner2831 He probably did so during the lockdowns, and I don't blame him because I did the same during lectures on topics I had already read up on and done assignments for weeks in advance.

I beat Super and Zero Mission and only briefly tried Prime and Fusion, but that was enough to enjoy the hell out watching this just now. There was something magical about her being raised by these people that we only knew of through creepy robot statues, and this made her really feel like she carries the legacy of their lost culture
Omg when I first played the game and encountered this scene I was screaming of the excitement. Watching Samus speak her native tongue in game was not expected. This was my GOTY in 2021
God, this game was so good. Definitely had some frustrating parts (mainly the E.M.M.I segments, pretty sure those took years off my life), but overall fantastic addition to the series
This scene surprised me when I was playing. I was expecting Samus to be her usual silent protagonist self. It was nice to hear her speak. Even if it was only in Chozo.
Eh, not really. You can clearly see the reaction of shock she has; Samus at this point is just too experienced to let it effect her for long or to lose her cool when her own life is on the line (unlike a certain other game.)
Simply a stunning game. The animations and the pose are simply, over the top. But the game move so fast you have to record it and slow it down to appreciate it. My First metroid title I play and simply unforgetable
I love the way Samus' body language is used here. When Quiet Robe shows up and stops the E.M.M.I. she doesn't lower her arm cannon immediately when she sees him - she's been through too much to assume that she's safe yet. Even when Quiet Robe bows, Samus hesitates, perhaps either considering her options or bewildered that a Thoha Chozo is actually still alive. After all, she hasn't seen a single living, non-hostile Chozo since she departed Zebes after the events of the (canon) Metroid manga. Once she decides to trust Quiet Robe, she lowers her guard while assuming probably the most badass "relaxed" pose I've ever seen, as if she knows that there's a plot dump incoming and she's listening carefully.
What really set this whole cinematic on a pedestal was the mix of Brinstars theme, with the fact they gave this Chozo the name similar to the very tribal way the Chozo refer to each other in the spin off comics and Metroid Prime lore, ANDDDDD the fact the way Quiet Robe greets Samus is the same way the Luminoth greet and express emotion given the Chozo influenced their culture greatly in METROID PRIME 2 AGHHHH
How intriguing! Mercury Steam (the team that made Dread) is based in Spain! I bet the resemblance is not a coincidence. They must've drawn influence from the esoteric dialects of their home country.
Setting aside the whole thing of a live Chozo and Samus speaking Spanish-Space-Bird, I'd like to call out how well-animated Quiet Robe's body language is. He looks so natural. Just look at that little shrug at 4:05. That is top-tier character animation.
I get goosebumps everytime I watch this scene. This is in my top 5 favorite gaming moments of all time, easily. The ONLY time in the entire game that Samus speaks up is to speak 3 sentences saying she's gonna handle shit, and IN CHOZO!!! It's also the VERY FIRST TIME WE GET TO SEE SAMUS INTERACTING WITH A CHOZO. I was screaming in my living room when I first saw this scene 😂
I'm starting to see where the Space Pirates drew most of the inspiration for their own direct combat doctrine. That warrior Chozo seems awfully familiar.
Fan Service done right. You got a Chozo ally finally interacting with you, a cover of a classic Metroid track, Samus's theme playing and then she herself speaking.
I cant believe THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE HEAR SAMUS SPEAK. Its so special that WEVE NEVER HEARD HER VOICE BEFORE and its her speaking her "native tongue"
It would be great during a sequel, we could have her thinking back to this scene, and actually showing emotion. During the events of Dread there wasn’t much time for introspection, but afterwards she had to deal with some kind of grief. It was the first sign of beneficial Chozo in decades after all. It must’ve done something to her.
This video has given more personality to Samus, the Chozo and the Metroid franchise as a whole than I would've ever expected from it in the past 22 years, only knowing Metroid from Smash trophy descriptions.
I feel like this moment would be even more impactful if this was the first time that Samus ever spoke in any game. No Other M or Smash Bros. voice clips for Zero Suit Samus.

@@josephdecasper7670 Pweeeze daddy let me use my missiles.
I just realized how much the visor on the helmet looks like a chozo beak and actual chozo head. This is epic.
Well the Chozo did designed Samus's Power Suit after all
@@ff3player yea I remember since the 1st game. You just couldn't really see much resemblance like now. And seeing a living chozo , that's 👌
Quiet robe and Raven Beak were the coolest Metroid characters in years and they were killed off way too fast.
Gotta hope they do a good job with Sylux in Prime 4
I agree I don’t get why quite robe had to be killed off so fast it was cool how the quite robe x parasite 🦠 helped samus in the end
They sound like nahuatl (Aztec language), just beautiful.
**Kani tiwalaj, ma titlajtokan totlajtol nochipa** (Wherever we go, always speak our language)
I wonder if it's intentional. There seems to be a clear inspiration drawn from Aztecs when it comes to the Chozo design. Its not as heavy as the Kemet inspiration, but the Chozo got a little Quetzalcoatl thing goin on
@@noname-bu1uxkr! They remind me a little to eagle warriors from the Aztecs, you know, for that bird head and beak
So, ridley would be Hernan Cortes?🤣 Haha jk
I mean she was raised by the Chozo, this is probably what she spoke growing up.
The Power Suit has a Translator Module built into it and Samus is just speaking English and translating into Chozo or after rescuing her from the Space Pirate raid that killed her parents and everyone else on the colony. They did injected Samus with their DNA In order to survive the planet's harsh conditions which could allow to speak Chozo.
Yes but she lived her early childhood with her human parents
@@cristiany140 Only until she was 3
@@ff3player well in the manga ( which I think is cannon) she speaks with her parents
I love the Maridia theme reuse.
It is Lower Brinstar, not Maridia
@Jaeger19Ultima But it isn't Maridia. It's Lower Brinstar, Red Soil.
Yes, other Metroid games used it for their underwater levels but it originated in Super Metroid as Lower Brinstar.
@@camphor333 a common misconception when red soil is slowed down
I was barely a Metroid fan.
And nearly all of them are incredibly smart, even a warrior tribe like Raven Beak's is smart enough to contain the nearly unstoppable X parasite without Metroids and hack the E.M.M.I
4:47 this is epic and all, but imagine how funny it would be if she just said after that long speech, “Sorry, what did you say?”
marvel unfunny ass dialogue
Marvel has done irreparable damage to all media
“Raven Beak is right behind me, isn’t he?”
4:50 timestamp if you just wanna hear her
4:48 as soon I hear Samus theme from Super Metroid on the background my jaw droped
I remember hearing this and I thought my game was set to the wrong language for some reason, and only after restarting the game did my dad suggest she is speaking the chozo language
every game needs a deku-tree 😂
5:29 .........."Samus Saying to herself THAT'S NOT NICE!"
"Bit rude mate, innit?"
The little animation details pepper throughout this segment are fantastic, like 1:06 - to 1:10 .
Love how the music shifts from Chozo to Samus themes
For a game with few cinematic scenes, this part was epic.
Samus looks a bit odd with her neck exposed though.
I appreciate how the game transitioned from Meridia/Torvus Bog Temple while the Chozo spoke over to Samus’ own theme when she responded.
I love that arm on the knee "Well, shit" look Samus gives at 1:10
I was in class and had to refrain from squealing like a kid when I heard her speak the first time
Ballsy of you to play in class. Must have been real boring for you to risk it.
@@thatloner2831 He probably did so during the lockdowns, and I don't blame him because I did the same during lectures on topics I had already read up on and done assignments for weeks in advance.
During covid lockdowns I was constantly playing animal crossing during english lessons, still had the best grades of the class and participated the most when the teacher asked questions. #thuglife
@@thatloner2831 Nah just a really crappy college course.
Man, this scene is so perfect! The way the theme switches to the Super Metroid theme just before Samus speaks give me chills!
This is the game Samus and the whole Metroid universe deserves. God it feels good to have an amazing Metroid game again
I beat Super and Zero Mission and only briefly tried Prime and Fusion, but that was enough to enjoy the hell out watching this just now.
There was something magical about her being raised by these people that we only knew of through creepy robot statues, and this made her really feel like she carries the legacy of their lost culture
Imagine he stops talking and Samus just goes “I have no idea what you just said.”
I like how the Chozo language sounds like a mix of Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic all at once
The way Samus immediately goes from Red Alert to the most casual pose possible at 1:08 just oozes badass confidence. Great character touch.
Fun fact: Samus' voice actor is the same as the Spanish GPS/Google Translate voice (both are done by Nikki Garcia)
Omg when I first played the game and encountered this scene I was screaming of the excitement. Watching Samus speak her native tongue in game was not expected. This was my GOTY in 2021
Samus's parents: Aw, I wonder what her first words will be?
*30 years later*
God, this game was so good.
Definitely had some frustrating parts (mainly the E.M.M.I segments, pretty sure those took years off my life), but overall fantastic addition to the series
This scene surprised me when I was playing. I was expecting Samus to be her usual silent protagonist self.
It was nice to hear her speak. Even if it was only in Chozo.
The look of rage on her face at 5:27 is so good. I'd rage too.
It’s interesting that in native Chozo, Samus name is pronounced more like ‘da-moose’
Samus didn't even care much that he did. She is so used that kindred spirits die, that she was like "That was expected"

4:44 "An insidious force that wants to conquer the universe and kill me, pfft....another Tuesday"- Samus, probably
This is the only way i want Link to speak ever too
Just pure affirmation of what ever lies in Store
A simple yes would be all it needs
She was raised by the chozo, so it makes sense she can speak the language
What really set this whole cinematic on a pedestal was the mix of Brinstars theme, with the fact they gave this Chozo the name similar to the very tribal way the Chozo refer to each other in the spin off comics and Metroid Prime lore, ANDDDDD the fact the way Quiet Robe greets Samus is the same way the Luminoth greet and express emotion given the Chozo influenced their culture greatly in METROID PRIME 2 AGHHHH
this languages seems
to sound similar to a language located in the north of spain and called euskera.
How intriguing! Mercury Steam (the team that made Dread) is based in Spain! I bet the resemblance is not a coincidence. They must've drawn influence from the esoteric dialects of their home country.
@@Mirror_Lotus I could totally buy that
Euskaran is such a cool language, it's a linguistic isolate so it's not related to any other known languages except for loanwords from Spanish
I love that this perfectly sets up the possibility for more Chozo tribes out there. Whether they're friend or foe though... will remain to be seen.
Samus looks so professional, so elegant in the suit. I mean look at how she points her canon at Quiet Rob before lowering it.
I'm starting to see where the Space Pirates drew most of the inspiration for their own direct combat doctrine. That warrior Chozo seems awfully familiar.
This was the first time I've ever heard Samus speak. I was so blown away that I immediately lost the fight against the chozo bot.
I could listen to Quiet Robe exposit and talk all day. Rest in peace
This was easily the best part of dread
it's very impressive that this isn't just random sounds, there is actually a full language and you can learn to speak chozo
Fan Service done right. You got a Chozo ally finally interacting with you, a cover of a classic Metroid track, Samus's theme playing and then she herself speaking.
The drop into the cutscene then the cutscene itself was such a cool moment to experience when I played through the game for the first time.
4:50 free Samus speech button
I really love how Samus helmet visor resembles a chozo' beak.
I cant believe THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE HEAR SAMUS SPEAK. Its so special that WEVE NEVER HEARD HER VOICE BEFORE and its her speaking her "native tongue"
Smash Bros and Other M:
It's a joke man...
Tom and Jerry: "you talked!"
This cut scene blew my fucking mind in my first run. I was so hyped.
This game can literally be described with one word: EPIC!
Nine words were far more impactful than Samus’ entire Other M script.
I lost my goddamn mind when Samus started speaking, in Chozo no less. Did not expect that at all!
