They did Connie Nielsen dirty as well. She had an amazing deleted scene from early on in the film that revealed her true motives and it should have been left in to flesh out her character more. She should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Joaquin should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. They were both amazing in their roles, playing brilliantly off each other and Russell Crowe.
@@DarlingNikki2 Then there's the execution scene which is the lynchpin that ties together Lucilla's earlier scene where she tells Commodus that he can't let treachery go unpunished to stay in his confidence and the later one where she tells Maximus that she has much to pay for. Not to mention how that helps inform Quintus' decision to turn on Commodus later and fills in the gap around what everybody thought happened to Maximus as well as his executioners. I know Ridley Scott says he prefers the theatrical version, but the extended cut just feels like the more complete experience which gives every character their due.
@@dynahvelvixin.8615 in the scene where Marcus Aurelius is talking with Maximus, you hear the exact reason "Commodus is not a moral man." "You have known this since you were young." - Marcus Aurelius, Gladiator He is directly saying that Commodus was f*cked up or a bad person since he was child.
Imagine being tugged along through campaigns, prepared all your young life to be an emperor and never living up to your fathers sky high expectations. No wonder he turned out badly. Great scene tho
And to think his brother River Phoenix was a great actor as well.Joaquin Phoenix doesn't get the respect he deserves.Maybe his performance as the Joker will change that.He should have won an Oscar for Walk the line.
His eyes alone deserve an Oscar lol! They smoulder with a mysterious dark fire... He is such a Scorpio man--crazy, remote, weird as hell and beautiful.
This scene was actually present in the TV version when I watched it, so I'm pretty sure they made the extended cut as well. So were many other scenes I see uploaded here and listed as deleted. In fact, I believe the extended cut became the predominant one instead of the shorter version.
He clearly had daddy issues. I'm sure his father loved him dearly but could not let him be his successor because he knew Commodus would not be a competent leader.
Joseph Harris well that's kinda what Commodus was. He was a pouty spoiled brat playing at being King. In the end, in history, he was murdered for his reckless extravagance.
Soma Cruz But he WAS competent...at least, somewhat. He was just a psychopath. I mean, the dude threatened to kill his own nephew if his sister didn’t sleep with him.
That's why it should be in the movie... It gives him somewhat of a motivation instead of just being a bad person. A great villain isn't bad just because he is bad. Still great though...
Even with this scene cut I always found commedus a more tragic, layered villain, so I find it ironic that Jack Gleason found his inspiration for Joffrey behind Joaquin’s performance
Why is it that so many Ridley Scott films have essential scenes deleted from them? Two minutes wasn't going to make that much of a difference in terms of pacing and length.
I thought that scene was a fever dream. I somehow remembered it but everything I watched the movie whether it was on TV or whatever, that scene never came up.
They did Joaquin dirty by deleting his scenes. He's bloody brilliant
They need to stop deleting scenes

This scene is so good, even dead he is angry at his father but still shows how he desired his love and affection
But why did he not have a good relationship with his father because the father had a good relationship with his daughter.
@@dynahvelvixin.8615 I think that's because she had less pressure on her shoulders, she knew she would never have access to power unlike her brother.
This scene gives Commodus true feelings about his father.
Not the scene where he murders him with his bare hands ? Haha ...

OUT OF ALL THE DELETED SCENES, This one was the best
They should have kept this in. It shows his ability to feel remorse which adds to his depth as a character. And, it was brilliantly acted 🔥🔥🔥
It's not remorse, it's shame.
@@robertg8565 it's both
By cutting that scene, they cut a piece of Phoenix great acting. What a pity!
"They didn't get it."
I'm gonna start using "I'm terribly vexed" whenever I'm upset about something now, it's a great line 😂
Way ahead of you...been doing it for years now.
@ black British? You mean immigrants that refuse to act like British people and are creating parallel society
😂
They should've made an uncut dvd all deleted scenes kept in chronological order in film
charlie c they did, actually
They did! ^-^ Thats why I was so confused why it says "Deleted Scene" in the title xD
They did…extended cut back in 2004
Imagine being tugged along through campaigns, prepared all your young life to be an emperor and never living up to your fathers sky high expectations. No wonder he turned out badly.
Great scene tho
There should be an extended version with all deleted scenes. This one is great cinema
well there is

He's got Daddy issues
Clearly, Commodus has no respect for the dead. This was definitely mirrored after the final battle, when his corpse was laid there in the arena.
@Space Roamer Sure enough, and plenty of emperors were just as psycho.
you could say he has no respect for the dad
thank god I watched the version of the film which had all the deleted scenes included. It’s left such a lasting impression.
Really bad daddy issues. I don't know why this was deleted.
But why did they not have a good relationship like Marcus had a good relationship with his daughter but why not his son.
@@dynahvelvixin.8615 Men put more pressure on their sons to succeed than they do their daughters.
Maybe because if they let this scene lots of people could empathize with the villain....
Maybe it was cut because it shows a regretful side of Commodus and makes his death less satisfying for mass audiences.
This scene was actually present in the TV version when I watched it, so I'm pretty sure they made the extended cut as well. So were many other scenes I see uploaded here and listed as deleted. In fact, I believe the extended cut became the predominant one instead of the shorter version.
There's no need to cut on a film about Rome, people will watch it just as eagerly.
What interesting history.
Roma Victor.
I like that they didn't keep this scene in because it makes Commodus look more like an infant instead of a villain who knows what he was doing.

Joaquin deserves the Oscar so bad

NOOOOO ESTO ME DOLIOOO MUCHOOOO, pobrecito Cómodo se nota lo dolido que en realidad está!! 💔💔💔 POR QUÉ BORRARON ESTA ESCENA?!?!
This scene is in the extended cut along with some other deleted scenes (not all of them, of course).

They should definitely have included that scene. It shows his derangement admirably.
woah! exactly how many deleted scenes were there in this movie? i'm finding one after another in my recommendations
This scene should be their 😂
A good representation of unresolved daddy issues 😢
im sorry who turned down the sound

He looks like Joker on the thumbnail
I dont remember it being deleated....It was in the film as i redolect
this Scene was not deleted from the movie! who said it was deleted??
But this scene is on my DVD
the statues of all the roman emperors
I still can't accept Joaquin Phoenix did not Win the Oscar for best suporting actor.
Swing away Commodus
Have i missed it, have i missed the battle?
If only Joaquin had a jackhammer instead of using a sword on the statute .
They shouldnt have delete any scene.

It's almost too similar to how he behaves when he kills his father, maybe that's why they deleted it.

All these deleted scenes rob the film of context. Shame really.

Love to know why they didn't have a good relationship.
