@@overwatch761 I'm just a casual viewer who learned about it a few weeks ago, I had no idea. Thanks for letting me know. That's insanely impressive not going to lie.
Oh that'd be cool for hot areas. I generally like when characters interact with the surroundings like Link in OoT where he sneezes or freezes when he's in cold areas.
Lots of 3d mario games are launch titles (mario 64 finished development on may 20 1996, literal weeks away from the japan launch) while you get zelda games like majora’s mask and tears of the kingdom at the end of the respective console’s lifespan… maybe they get more experience with the console hardware towards the end?
It would be nice if the enemies in the game (like those Goombas you're showing in this video) could also generate those environment particles. I can easily imagine the Goomba running at Mario at 0:10 leaving behind a trail of grass blades.
I think instead of grass blades spawning behind him it would look better if a few would appear around his feet and flatten outwards as the each foot digs into the grass, to indicate the grass has some previously unseen density. Likely much tougher to implement though.
Not sure if you're looking for feedback but I'd personally have the smoke trail be replaced with the grass in this situation. Mostly because the smoke trail is, I think at least, meant to be dust getting kicked up. It just seems here you have both dust and grass, when the smoke should be used for more hard concrete bricky surfaces.
will new animations and sounds for mario be added too, to make him feel more modern? maybe higher quality versions of the voicelines and some more natural movement anims
3 years ago there was this guy who did a raytracing demo on SNES. He did use a "homebrew expansion chip" to assist the hardware, though. You can find the videos by searching for SuperRT.
Have you ever considered adding ''wall environment particles''? For exemple, when Mario is wall jumping, sliding vertically along a wall (after a failed wall jump), or horizontally (when Mario is glued to a wall and moving sideways), on walls made of dirt, stones, or even ice, particles could "detach" and fall to the ground.
Not bad but they seem a bit big, also maybe have them appear less frequently? Seems a bit much and makes you wonder how mario is not turning the land bare
Hmm looks like it is a bit static. In Portal64, James Lambert had a really good particle effect on the portal gun that adds some variety. Maybe something similar can be done with the grass?
Have you dabbled with simulating bump mapping / normal mapping? This technique here looks pretty good: ruclips.net/video/UOHdDllyqOU/видео.htmlsi=Zqn6xmPcGWE_nAv3 How big of a hit would this take on the frame rate? From what I remember you are using 2 textures for the ground already. Maybe this could work for rock walls/hills to add detail? If nothing else it could be used for cut scenes or menu (RTX ON Mario at the title screen lol).
"This technique has numerous downsides. In principle the light direction must be updated for each drawn polygon, only high resolution bumps can be captured, and it's easy to hit overflows in the color combiner. In fact I had to boost the contrast of this video a bit because the end result was so low contrast!" I think the video itself already explained pretty well why this is not something i'd like to do. maybe if my entire game was 90 degree aligned indoor rooms, but definitely not something with this much organic geometry.

Woah
Biobak's mum must be so proud.
mario is so powerful he rips the grass from the soil with every step
HE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!!! (keep getting away with it dude you're insanely good)
I'm not gonna lie, this ROM hack is one of the most excited I've been for any Mario game. I'm always so glad to see updates on this, it's amazing!
Is it a ROM hack though?
The whole engine has been rewritten... Rom hack this game is not.
@@overwatch761 I'm just a casual viewer who learned about it a few weeks ago, I had no idea. Thanks for letting me know. That's insanely impressive not going to lie.
How such small and simple effect can give so much immersion
Wow
The puff of smoke when you kill an enemy actually looks volumetric
It's amazing
Sweat particles next pls
Oh that'd be cool for hot areas. I generally like when characters interact with the surroundings like Link in OoT where he sneezes or freezes when he's in cold areas.
Dripping from his chest and pants.
Just like in Super Mario Sunshine!
Make it so that if he's under shade he just constantly wipes sweat off every single time he comes to a halt
(That is a real Super Mario Sunshine bug)
If Mario runs around in the same area long enough he'll mow the grass
Kaze: tomorrow I'm adding real time lighting and shows to the grass effects.
reminder this can run on an N64
And that kaze was mentally unwell enough to rewrite the entire source code
this is magic

brooooooo, the Nintendo 64 had so much potential unused

@@96blocks They do indeed.
It looks really good but i think the grass comes at intervals that are way too regular
its dependant on his step animation! i think it makes sense
@@KazeClips yeah but maybe every third or so step it wouldnt spawn a grass blade
@@KazeClips I think there should be different sizes at least and maybe triangles
I clicked the video after reading the title, zoned out and wondered what I was supposed to see for a solid 2mins

I love eating grass
Are you a cow?
I like it but i wonder if it would look better if they didnt fly so high in the air
This is unbelievable
Mario's clothes are now made of sandpaper.
man what a great detail!!!
I can’t say how cook this is
Yes! Finally~ It's so good. Now we're touching grass.

Not what I expected from the title, but still looks neat.
This romhack will finish the same day as the new 120 star tas
This is my favorite kind of mod. Doable in the age the game was released, but very different from the releazed version.
How much force does mario have to put into each step to consistantly tear grass from the ground and toss it into the air?
just think about how high mario can jump. dude has insane force in his legs
At this point youre doing a gamecube game for n64 hahahahah, keep going kaze!
That looks good.
You should add a secret code to the game that cranks the effect to 11
kaze im afraid you've gone insane
This is intresting I mean why grass 👍

Wait, so couldn’t Kaze theoretically recreate the entirety of odddesy in 64?
Yeah I like this!
How much stuff are you gonna add to your optimized SM64 engine?
Kaze: *y e s*
kaze; master of creating things you most likely wont notice
that is so awesome!
Real time lawn mowing simulation
5 years later, kaze will somehow find out how to get path tracing running in mario 64 on real hardware.

I saw that grasshopper
You really are shaving the quads with this one

I feel like the grass particles could be a little smaller, otherwise this looks great

You just turned Mario 64 into Pacman Adventures? Just like that?

I think the frequency is too high, is mario wearing studded shoes?
SKOAL YEAH HOSSES!
CLIBBINS!!
do the goobas animate angry faces when they chase you like in odessy or galaxy
you didn't touch grass for this? right? its a public health risk
This is really cool
How about peach as playable Charakter with custom Physik and movement but only in a harder gamemode
