I'm SOOO EXITED about the round 3 of Multilingual Bookclub!! I wanted to take part in previous round but couldn't due to lack of time. This month I'm going to have more free time and I'll glad to spend it on learning my target language ✨
I wanted to do Round 2 but I’m having a lot of anxiety and tiredness from working on getting my own podcast+coaching business started. (Diversity Coaching: I’m 3 different Native American nations) As a single mom and pandemic unemployment coming to an end, but teaching jobs are still dead man’s boots, I had to prioritize my final push to get this launch off the ground … and still not quite there. I hope to be able to do Round 3. 🤞🏽 If I can, it will be the same that I planned for around 2: Mystery of Nils and I can’t remember the Cherokee book title off the top of my head. This timeline is perfect for me. I should have finished my Cherokee 3 final exam before it starts (the exam is open somewhere around that time; I’d have to log into the website to remind myself, exactly).
Great project and I'm looking forward to participating for the first time. I won't read the proposed books because I just read books in their original language 😅 So I think I'll join with some books in English :)

I wish my Italian was good enough to read the original version, but oh well…hopefully that day will come at some point. For now I’ve found Seta in traditional Chinese, so I’ll give that a go. Should be interesting, I’ve never read anything that was translated into Mandarin so far 🙂
I have found you few days ago and wow! I'm so happy to join your language community and join the Multilingual Book Club for round 3 :D I will be reading in Spanish :) and you've picked great book with this one chapter - one page. It's not overwhelming so it's really awesome!
So thankful my friend Leafling Learns told me about this! I've only read middle grade fiction so far in Italian, but it's probably time I pushed myself a bit. Just ordered both of these and am excited about joining in! (Also checking out Journaly.)

Ooh, this is good timing! My husband and I will be spending the month of October in Rome (which is where we met), and we both want to get our Italian back up to speed for that adventure. So I'm going to propose that we both read these books. Btw, I did read A Esmorga in Galego as I said I would for round 2, but unfortunately I didn't like the book very much, so I ended up not writing about it on Journaly. I did make a video review of it on my other YT channel, Wendy Speaks Galego, though.

I've always wanted to read Italo Calvino in Italian (esp Invisible Cities and Cosmicomics). But before I do that I'll give Baricco a try. Just ordered the three-pack on Amazon: Oceano Mare, Seta, and Novacento.
I wish I were ready to participate, but my Italian isn't quite up to it yet. I'm still reading beginning short stories. I have Il Prigioniero della Torre by Nerdheim, and I still can't get through the Prologue without checking the dictionary about dozen times.
Hey, where do you recommend getting the book? Amazon says delivery between October 8-20, so that won't work. Never mind; I found one. I still might have to start late though. Thanks for doing this. It should be interesting and fun. My goal is one page a day in French (I'm intermediate).
Damn! I really wanted to join for round 3 but Italian is my first language and I can't bring myself to read Italian literature in translation, unless there's a very special translation (plus, I really dislike Baricco). But great idea to focus on an author rather than on a book :) next time!

Especially when it comes to fiction, I think he is a perfectly fine writer telling perfectly fine stories, but somehow his pace and style is not what I look for. When it comes to Italian literature I'm more into Buzzati, Pirandello (hard for learners, not recommended) and Moravia. And living authors I also really like are Zerocalcare (comic artist) and Valeria Parrella.

I don't think this comment is completely fair. I have not read this book yet, and so I would not be able to judge the depiction of Japan for myself until I have read it. As I mentioned in my videos, this book was given to me as a gift when I left Italy and was highly recommended to me by a lot of people; and given the length and format, I thought it was a nice choice for us to discover together in the book club. I was hoping to enjoy discovering the book together with our wonderful group and discussing it as we go, sharing everyone's thoughts and reflections - so I did not look into all the details of the story and its critiques. I would say that if it turns out the book's depiction of Japan is unfair and inaccurate, that's a perfectly valid thing to discuss and to bring to a wider audience as a part of the book club's purpose in having honest and substantive discussions about the book, which can certainly include critique. I would say that this is one of the great things about the multilingual book club: we get the opportunity to share the perspective of such a wonderfully diverse group of people who all have different backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge. In this case, lots of people who might not know anything about Japan would be able to greatly benefit from rich, honest, substantive discussion with people who have genuine, extensive knowledge and experience with Japan and get a more balanced, fair understanding than if they read the book by themselves. As I also mentioned in my videos, the book choice is totally optional. With such a large and diverse group of people who are also studying so many languages, it's impossible for me to make everyone happy and make the perfect selection for each person, so all I can do is try my best to choose nice books - but as we saw in round 02, it is also perfectly fine and beneficial for people to choose their own book if they don't like the primary option in a given round. The main thing I am trying my best to do is to encourage people to read in their target language and create a beautiful, encouraging, and supportive environment where we all help each other.

What I wanted to say is that representation matters. Japan has a history of being hyper fantasized and hyper fetishized in the West, in ways that can be harmful - it is a trend that continues to this day. I won’t go too much into it because I’m no expert in sociology, media studies, etc. but as a Japanese person it was just my honest reaction to be bummed out that it’s another fantasy version of Japan being put in the spotlight, rather than a genuine Japanese voice being heard. This is not at all to say this book shouldn’t exist or that people shouldn’t read it. Art and literature should always be free. It’s just that, because language learning is a great doorway to learning about the cultural and historical background of the people who speak it, I thought it odd that primary book being featured in this language learning bookclub is a * Italian* book about a * French * merchant’s experience in * Japan*. You're right that it's unfair to judge a book without having reading it. But the premise of the book already made me cautious, and checking Japanese reviews of the book made it pretty clear to me that the book was not well-researched nor culturally nuanced... to take one obvious example, Hara Kei is pretty weird for a Japanese name. Like I wrote in the original comment, I would have loved for the group to read a story set in Italy, or written from the POV of an Italian protagonist. Even though I would have read it in Spanish (my target language) the learning experience would have be so much more enriching to hear an Italian voice representing the Italian experience. It may have even inspired me (and others) to finally start learning Italian. Again, I’m a big believer in representation. The reason why I wanted voice my opinion as a Japanese person is because I think Japanese/Asians are underrepresented in the youtube polyglot community in general (which is not anybody’s fault; English being the dominant language, it’s inevitable that people whose target language is English are unlikely to participate). My hope is that it will be food for thought for the future. In the end it is your book club / your community, so you have all the freedom to shape it in the way you see fit. It’s great that your rules are flexible as you mentioned, and receiving a book as a gift is a wonderful reason to read one. This is just one person voicing her opinion and not a "demand" for anything to be changed. I don't feel like participating in round 3, but I will definitely be checking out Baricco in my own time (thank you for introducing me to this author). 多言語の読書会というアイディアはすごく面白いと思ったし、楽しみにしていたので残念です。イタリア人作家の本を読むなら、イタリア人が主人公の作品、イタリアが舞台の作品を読みたかったな…。
