Of all the videos... this was the best. Literally answered all my questions and kept it simple. Thank you!! Excited to pick up sewing as an hobby, it has been on my mind forever so it doesn't hurt to give it a try. :)
Thank you for this video! I’m a 44yr old beginner. I had been looking for a machine that would help me with the basics and let me grow a bit down the road. So many options and price ranges. When I say beginner, I mean I know very little about sewing. I actually ordered this model because of your feedback/info. You seem very experienced and knowledgeable. I’m glad I came across your channel. Thank you!
Danielle we are so glad to help. You are so welcome. This is why we do it, for people like you. We are currently working on a beginners series. Please let us know what questions you have because we are using the Joy for it. Jared is editing a 'how to thread' we are releasing next week. Happy sewing!
I was looking for a second machine to compliment my Sailrite Ultrafeed. I was looking at a singer heavy duty machine. I saw your video on “heavy duty” singers and changed my mind. I now have a Baby Lock Joy and love it. I no longer need to change needles, thread, and tension on my Sailrite to sew lighter fabrics. My baby lock sales person assured me that many men have more than one machine 😎👍
I have a question? For the price I love this machine but SINGER HD4452 is another 30 bucks added to the price. Coming from a sewer what would you look more into buying ?
Absolutely the Joy. They added $30 buys you more plastic, Singer unfortunately just it’s the brand it used to be and “HD/heavy duty” is often a gimmick I’m sorry to say. 😊
The "width" adjustment on all machines is always used to vary the width of zigzag and decorative stitches. This description sounds as if the width selector - on this specific machine - can be used to adjust the needle position. As a garment sewist, needle position is rarely an issue. I owned my current machine, now 32 years old, for 13 years before I even realized I couldn't adjust the needle position. If it is adjusting needle position, it would be nice to confirm this. All of that said, if I were forced to purchase a new machine, I would most likely purchase this machine. It does everything one would need for making garments and could sew knits without the need for a serger. No amount of computerization takes the place of sewing skill - with the exception of a single step buttonhole, but I wouldn't bother with computerization just for that. The amount of time one saves with "convenience" features/items for domestic sewing is negligible. For instance, I can use a 3 stitch zigzag to finish the seam allowances on a pair of trousers in less time, creating less bulk, than it takes to load matching thread into my serger.Yes, if I didn't care what color of thread I was using I could use the ubiquitous "grey" and save 3 minutes - but I care what color of thread is used. Matching thread creates a higher quality of garment. In short, if one uses sewing as a life skill, this machine should suit the needs of any serious seamstress at any level, on a budget. My machine is a Kenmore, purchased in 1990 for $279. It basically does everything this machine does, though it did come with a buttonhole attachment for higher quality buttonholes. Yes, I'm looking for a donor (usually around $40) as I think this machine will last the rest of my life. I've cleaned, oiled and greased it myself for 32 years. Once the warranty expires, with the help of RUclips videos and online forums almost any mechanical machine can be properly maintained at home. Once you place a computer chip in a machine, you are at the mercy of that chip. I also use vintage machines. The only "convenience" feature I require on those is the ability to reverse stitch for locking seam ends. My Singer 15-88 treadle will reverse. I'm happy.
You did an outstanding job with this review. I have watched plenty of videos on what machine to buy and you answered every question that I had. Thank you I really appreciate the time you put into making this video
This is a nice budget sewing machine. I would also recommend the Baby Lock Zeal or the Janome Sewist 500. Very good mechanical budget priced sewing machines.
I got into sewing during quarentine. I have a cheap imported one that sat in the basement of my house for a long time till I took it out and started using it. It used to work on 1 layer of thin fabric but now it's a complete pain to use! I enjoy handsewing but it's not feasible for the big projects I wanna make. Hopefully I can convince my dad to get this one for me, since I already have fabric and a sewing pattern, I just need a decent machine lol
Thank you for all the advice I'm now shopping around for a beginner's machine I'm so glad I did not spend the money before I saw this video. 👍💯 Your video was the best.
This is a great video. I wish there was something like this when I bought my machine seven years ago I bought a brother CS6000i from Walmart for $125. I am looking to upgrade now as I am doing a lot of bags and while the machine is great and I have not had any problems with it thankfully it is not sturdy when I am sewing on multiple layers of jeans or leather. I am regifting it to my cousin who wants to start sewing. I’m looking for something that is around 25 to 35 pounds but no more. I was wondering if you had any suggestions I do do alterations and sew my own clothes also. I have an embroidery machine a surger and a cover stitch machine.

Love this review. I’m a beginner looking for a machine I can grow into. I’m wondering if this is a machine that will allow me to sew denim and heavier materials as well?
You absolutely can sew through denim on this and even most machines, this one will just hold up better long term. I’d also look up some tricks for sewing through the bulky seams on denim (ie leveling the foot) that can make a world of difference as to how your denim sewing experience goes.
I got a refurbished singer “heavy duty” machine for $173…I found this video after watching your video about why not to get a heavy duty branded machine but I saw it after the fact. I can still return it because I haven’t opened it yet, but if it was cheaper than this one, should I just keep it?
What would you recommend for an intermediate sewer that started on an industrial juki( I miss her😭) but now is on somewhat of a budget? I do at home personal sewing only, nothing too crazy but sometimes use thicker fabrics? I want something that will last me through the years ;) thank you in advance!
Nice videos, very helpful information. Too bad those US machines aren't usually available in Europe. I'd be interested if you would make a review about Janome HD series, just to hear your in depth opinion. Looking to buy one, just from a perspective of longevity, don't really need any all that heavy duty potential for occasional hobby projects.
Hi😃 really found your video helpful. I like how your assistant speaks in to help. Where can I purchase this machine? I do not own any machine and would like to start this as a hobby.
The best thing to do is google Babylock Joy and see if there are any local dealers in your area. If not then I’d opt for one of the dozens of online retailers for them. It’s such an open world as far as hobbies go, there is so much you can do! I hope you fall in love with it and find in it an outlet to express yourself!
I have a new Singer model 2277 machine which I purchased at online and found that I could have gotten it cheaper at our local Wal-Mart for a much cheaper price. Upon bringing it home I tried to stitch with it and found that I am having a bobbin issue with the machine as I can't get the bobbin thread to come up properly. I finally gave up on the machine and it is collecting dust as I have given up on sewing for now.
So is your needle not catching the bobbin thread? That is what happened with my singer. The timing became off after 3 months. I bought it at costco for $180 excluding tax and I returned it.
I’m late to this video. Hopefully you’ll see this. Does the foot pedal control the speed of sewing? Might be an odd question but I’m new to sewing and my grandmothers old machine was much too fast/out of control for me.
Typically, the harder you push down on the foot control the faster it goes. Some machines have a speed adjustment. It depends on the machine. Hope that helps.
Hi! I’m new to sewing machines. Unfortunately I can’t find the babylock joy where I live. I’ve seen a ton of relatively cheap brother machines so I was wondering how can I be able to tell if those are sturdy enough? A pricier alternative I’m looking at is the Janome hd3000 but I’m wondering if that’s an overkill for a beginner…
Unfortunately for me the nearest 'sewing machine store' is nearly 150 miles away. The nearest 'Baby Lock' retailer is even more. ~55 miles away is the nearest place calling itself a 'sewing machine repair' shop but they are not an authorized repair location for any brand. I'm not convinced that buying anything but these disposable models at Wally World is the best option for me.
I currently sew on my Mom’s Singer from 1960 😬 It’s decent because I’m a beginner but I was thinking of upgrading to a machine that does more than 2 stitches LOL. This machine looks like it may be for me. Thank you
hello, curious about the vertical spool holder and other accessories needed for double needle/stitching you mention. I can't find it on babylock's website so I can purchase third party for all that is needed? Thx!
Hi, Babylock only sells through local shops so it’s sometimes hard finding parts if you don’t have one near by. My go to is sewingpartsonline.com. You can search by the part and make and model of your machine to help guarantee it works. As for double needles though, most any will work and you can pick those up at places like hobby lobby and JoAnns. Hope this helps!
The Zest is a solid machine. For me it comes down to what you want to sew and how much you’ll be using it. This machine is a little bit easier with the top loading bobbin. It also has a zigzag which is needed if you plan to sew anything that stretches.
My "disposable" brother just bit the dust. I'm looking for an affordable replacement that will also be able to handle denim. I do not quilt. A self threader, top loading bobbin, stitch width, tension recommendation features are important to me. Do you have any recommendations?
The bobbin case is both plastic and metal and is the same all the way up to their $15000 machines and it has a metal bobbin basket which is where the bigger difference lies. It does have some plastic gears here and there but so do machines that were made 50 years ago and are still sewing today. This machine has only been out for two years so it’s hard to say how long it will last. It’s predecessor was the Babylock Anna and in our years in the industry we only saw a handful for repair (user error sewing over a button or something that threw the timing) but primarily just cleaning. It’s like anything in that the better you take care of it the longer it will last. With at least a cleaning every few years, kept indoors with temperature control (so preferably not an attic) and sewing on it at least every few months to keep the parts moving I would expect this machine to last at least 20+ years.
I am a crafter and I joined 2 different groups that making wreath attachments that require sewing, ran across your video and I am wanting to purchase this sewing machine and was wondering the best to purchase it? I can't even sew a button so lets hope when I get it I will be able to figure out how to use it. Its going to be a birthday present for me next month.
Honestly I’d say google it and see if there is a Babylock sewing machine store or dealer near you, if so I’d buy from them, otherwise any online store who has it in stock should be about the same. 🤷♀️ And we just uploaded a video on how to thread this exact machine, so hopefully that helps too! So excited for your sewing journey to begin!
Just wondering if the needle threader on this machine is easy to use for a beginner. Some higher end machines have automatic ones, but seem to break, from the reviews, and not be that user friendly as you would think. Not sure about this?
I’d say it’s average. It will last forever if you always use it as direct with the needle in the highest position. If you use it once with the needle down though you’ll bend the hook and it won’t work. This is the case with just about every needle threader though, electric machines help with this bc they automatically stop with the needle in the highest position
Baby lock has the best needle threaders. That said, if your needle isn't at it's highest position, you'll bend the barb hook that pulls the thread through the needle eye.
@@KatchiVatchimost needle threaders I've used (and I have used all brands) don't work nearly as well as baby lock threaders. I'm not even talking about their incredible automatic push of a button threaders. The manual threaders pull more of a loop through the eye. Others get the tiniest loop through the eye.
I’m getting into junk journaling and looking for a machine that is not only durable and easy (for me) for fabric but also sewing card stock and paper. In your opinion will this machine work for me? Thank you
Thank you so much for making this video! I have a newly started dog bandana business and our sewing machine is probably 40+ years old and it just completely gave out last night, so this video is a god send considering I’m supposed to launch new bandanas next Friday! This sewing machine would do well with everyday use right?
So this baby lock is not a straight stitch machine. Its a good entry level sewing machine with a few different stitches (like zigzag). A straight stitch machine is something the only does a straight stitch but really really fast. These are idea for some businesses because they are a baby version of industrial machines. They are more expensive, so as your business grows you may want to look at them. We like the juki TL series(tl 2010) and Janome has a few models as well we like. I think the new one is the HD9. Check out our video call, the best sewing machine you probably won't buy. We talk about straight stitch machines a bit. Look up some of the ones we mention there. Hope that helps!
My mom wants me to start but both of us have no knowledge in this field and the problem we have is every machine we bought (2) broke on the first use will this break easily? Thank you for the video🤍
Has anyone been able to find an extension table and walking foot that are compatible with this machine? I got this for my daughter and she loves the machine but expandability seems to be non-existent.
You can get an extension table from Sew Steady, they make them for every make and model machine (start around $75) and Babylock walking foot for low shank machines is the one you need (BLG-WF) those aren’t cheap either at anywhere between $45-70. The pandemic definitely has a part to play in the shortage of walking feet unfortunately. Best of luck in your hunt though!
I found a sewing machine dealer but he doesn't have this one. He s got the ever sewn sparrow 15 to sell. What do you think of that one? As it's not in the description idk, is it good?
I have not personally seen or sewn on an Eversewn so I can’t speak to the quality or not. I had a previous employer who picked up the EverSewn line once I no longer worked there and she said they were decent machines. I would say it’s going to be a better option than what you could get from joanns, hobby lobby or Walmart if it comes with the dealer to help back it up and fulfill any warranty claims should they arise. Sorry I can’t offer more direct opinions but I hope that helps.
I understand that, I really can’t stress enough to buy from someone you like. If you felt like he was genuine and helpful I’d feel comfortable purchasing if you felt like he was just trying to make a sale and such you’re possibly better off online. It’s a tough choice sometimes. I’m excited for you that your looking to start (or further) your sewing journey! A new machine is always so exciting, once you finally make that decision that is, picking it out can seem overwhelming sometimes. Lol
It would definitely do the job, though I don’t think I’d want to go into production making them on this machine. But I’ve personally stitched through 8 layers of denim on a joy with no issues
I don’t as it’s best to shop locally for the support, however if you google it they can be purchased from a great many major online sewing machine retailers.
I’m starting a dog bandanna business shortly and I only have about 200-275 dollars to spend on a sewing machine. Is this one that would work well for just sewing those?
I cannot find this sewing machine writhing 4 hours away from me :( but I need a new sewing machine by today, do you recommend any other affordable sewing machines that I might be able to find at Joanns fabrics? Or anywhere else?
The best thing to do is google Babylock Joy and see if there are any local dealers in your area. If not then I’d opt for one of the dozens of online retailers for them. I don’t have one link that’s guaranteed to always have them in stock unfortunately. And you can’t get them through Amazon, at least not at this point in time.
Where did you buy this machine? I looked on the website but it wants me to find a retailer nearby. There aren't any close to me except one and they don't carry this particular one.
So we actually got this one when Jordan was a baby lock certified expert working at a retail store. She got it directly from baby lock using her retail points she earned. Thats really dumb that they don't carry it, they could have definitely ordered it for you. But then again you can order this online and have it shipped to you. If the local store isn't helpful or is inconvenient to drive too just order it online. We don't have a place that we have used personally but if you google "babylock joy" there are a couple of big sewing machines websites that have it. ;)
@@JF-bk7ir That is the model. The company is Babylock and their models have names. This is the Joy. The next step up is Jubilant. Feel free to browse their website for more information. I just tried the Jubilant over the weekend and I really liked it.
This would work but you may want to look at the baby lock zeal or any other machine with a pressure foot pressure adjustment. That feature comes in handy for thicker materials.
I’m so sorry, life got away from us at the time we recorded this and we lost track of what we were planning to do next. The Babylock Zeal is my go to for quality, economic one-step buttonholes.
@@baby.goblin You can go to Babylock's website and they have a section called 'Find a Retailer'. You put in your zipcode and usually a sewing store will come up nearby. I was just trying up a Jubilant, which is the step up from the Joy at a sewing shop in my town.
I tried to repair a machine once, and broke the plastic cover and never could get it back together properly, and now the sewing machine techs laugh at the duct tape holding it together!
Hahaha, the covers are so tricky! And I’ve seen one lady who literally ruined her $5000 embroidery machine bc she put 2 screws for the cover back in the wrong place. 😳 It seems like it would be simple but it takes some finesse for sure.
yes chinese are making gears for these machines problem is sewing mechanics oil plastic gears and they dissolve. Gotta have the old and the new to properly get your jollies off and be turned on!

As for double needles though, most any will work and you can pick those up at places like hobby lobby and JoAnns. Hope this helps!
Do you have any thoughts on this vs the baby lock zest?
The Zest is a solid machine. For me it comes down to what you want to sew and how much you’ll be using it. This machine is a little bit easier with the top loading bobbin. It also has a zigzag which is needed if you plan to sew anything that stretches.
I love anything pink 💗
Thank you very helpful!
You so are welcome!
Where is the best place to buy this machine?
is this machine good for sewing fabric onto denim? that’s the main reason i’m here ! thank you anyways for the awesome video
It 100% could do the job, however if you’re doing it for a business I’d say there are better machines for that like the Janome HD 3000 or a Juki 2010.
My "disposable" brother just bit the dust. I'm looking for an affordable replacement that will also be able to handle denim. I do not quilt. A self threader, top loading bobbin, stitch width, tension recommendation features are important to me. Do you have any recommendations?
Great video.like to know the longevity of the machine. It's all metal pieces?Or they are plastic? Thanks
It's really hard to say. Like a car if you take care of it will last for years and years. The important thing are all metal.
Thank you for your help. I just want to start learning how to . Will be my first sawing machine.
And we just uploaded a video on how to thread this exact machine, so hopefully that helps too!
What is the model of the one you recommended for garments that is $100 more?
Baby lock zeal!
@@KatchiVatchi thank you so much!
Can't go wrong with their genuine series machines. Best of luck! Let us know what you get!
You have me sold, unfortunately they aren’t available in the UK 😩
Oh nooooo!
Good vid.
I just sent you an email to thank you for this recommendation!!!
We got it! We are SO glad you love you’re machine and found this helpful!
I’m getting into junk journaling and looking for a machine that is not only durable and easy (for me) for fabric but also sewing card stock and paper. In your opinion will this machine work for me? Thank you
This would be great for that, all I’d say is paper will dull your needles considerably faster so I’d change them out more regularly.
Thank you so much for making this video! I have a newly started dog bandana business and our sewing machine is probably 40+ years old and it just completely gave out last night, so this video is a god send considering I’m supposed to launch new bandanas next Friday!
This sewing machine would do well with everyday use right?
Oh yeah. For a business you may eventually want a straight stitch machine but this definitely works!
@@KatchiVatchi awesome! Thank you so much! Would you recommend a specific straight stitch machine over this one?
No and it typically comes with a warranty and a free first service. Talk to a local shop and see what they can do for you .
@@KatchiVatchi thank you so much 💖

@@KatchiVatchi thank you for taking the time. It seems decent but maybe he s just a good seller...
Lol
@@nawellmoh Have you found a machine for you yet?
Can this machine be used to stitch denim pants or jackets ?
It would definitely do the job, though I don’t think I’d want to go into production making them on this machine. But I’ve personally stitched through 8 layers of denim on a joy with no issues
Do you have a link for this machine?
I don’t as it’s best to shop locally for the support, however if you google it they can be purchased from a great many major online sewing machine retailers.
Why no cc for deaf😟😟😟
I’m starting a dog bandanna business shortly and I only have about 200-275 dollars to spend on a sewing machine. Is this one that would work well for just sewing those?
Absolutely!!
I cannot find this sewing machine writhing 4 hours away from me :( but I need a new sewing machine by today, do you recommend any other affordable sewing machines that I might be able to find at Joanns fabrics? Or anywhere else?
We like Janome sewing machine as will, they will probably be a bit more expensive but they are really solid. Sorry for the delayed response!
@@KatchiVatchi no worries! Thank you, your videos are super helpful! I actually ended up purchasing a Janome mystyle 100 and it works great so far!
Great!!!
Where’s the link?
We don't have a place that we have used personally but if you google "babylock joy" there are a couple of big sewing machines websites that have it. ;)
What model are you showing so I can look for it
Baby lock joy
@@KatchiVatchi theresa asked for the model
@@JF-bk7ir That is the model. The company is Babylock and their models have names. This is the Joy. The next step up is Jubilant. Feel free to browse their website for more information. I just tried the Jubilant over the weekend and I really liked it.
@@beatlebrarian That is a good one! are you going to get it?
thx
have you posted the follow up videos for this? can’t seem to find them.
Not yet! We had another kid during the holidays and are a bit behind. Sorry
I need a sewing machine to make a wool anorak lol so that's why I'm here
This would work but you may want to look at the baby lock zeal or any other machine with a pressure foot pressure adjustment. That feature comes in handy for thicker materials.
@@KatchiVatchi oh wow thanks for the reply. I'm gonna check that out !
I was waiting for your recommendation for the one step button hole person :(
I’m so sorry, life got away from us at the time we recorded this and we lost track of what we were planning to do next. The Babylock Zeal is my go to for quality, economic one-step buttonholes.
Do you think this is a good machine to make plushies on? With minky?
Do you have any questions about beginner sewing machines?
Where can I find this machine? Are there any less than $200 that are comparable?
@@baby.goblin You can go to Babylock's website and they have a section called 'Find a Retailer'. You put in your zipcode and usually a sewing store will come up nearby. I was just trying up a Jubilant, which is the step up from the Joy at a sewing shop in my town.
I tried to repair a machine once, and broke the plastic cover and never could get it back together properly, and now the sewing machine techs laugh at the duct tape holding it together!
Oh Iforgot to mention this is a great video, tons of valid information. I might very well get one for my grandaughter for her 9th birthday. Thank you
Hahaha, the covers are so tricky! And I’ve seen one lady who literally ruined her $5000 embroidery machine bc she put 2 screws for the cover back in the wrong place. 😳 It seems like it would be simple but it takes some finesse for sure.
You Definitely Canadian .❤️❤️🤍🤍
Hahaha nope.
can i have one for my birthday🥺 i really love to have one🥺🥺
Did you get one for your birthday?
no
☹
Does she ever state the name of the machine lol it’s not even in the description
It's the Baby Lock Joy. Lol
They've gone up $50 in four years. Sad!
🤣 Da be niste sponzorisani i kao ne prodajete u vašoj prodavnici. 🤣
$250 is NOT a budget machine!
yes chinese are making gears for these machines problem is sewing mechanics oil plastic gears and they dissolve. Gotta have the old and the new to properly get your jollies off and be turned on!
