- In this video, I’m going over an example of what to do when faced with this dreaded notification in excel:
'We can't update some of the links in your workbook right now.
You can continue without updating their values, or edit the links you think are wrong'
Editing links would be great, if you knew where in the file those links were and what data it was populating with, right? Sometimes it’s not that easy to find out though, especially if you’re using a file that’s been passed down from several coworkers and/or you’ve moved your own files around.
Watch the video for some tips that will show how to find and fix those broken links!

Thank you for this breakdown. In my case i just made a copy just in case, verified the links if serious, and broke the links. It worked. Subscribed
Thanks Geri! That is a great idea to make a copy, just in case you need to go back to the original. Take care!
Thank you for the help! You can also change the Search option to "Workbook" so you do not need to check it on each Sheet.
thank you! That's a great tip!
I wish RUclips Videos would list/show recorded date. Erin, how about doing a "How to edit Excel Links, Excel Can't update Links Error" for newer Excel version that have "Workbook Links" instead of "Edit Links"? I could not fine "Check Status" not a links status in "Workbook Links" pop-up.
Hi there! This video was posted 1 year ago using the latest Excel 365 (so in fall of 2022), if that helps. Are you using the online version or desktop version of excel? Are your links external to other workbooks, or internal - same tabs within the same workbook. Those could be variables affecting what you see, but hard to tell without seeing it. My example is with the desktop version and with links to external workbooks. Hope that helps!
For the longest time, whenever I want to open my budget workbook, it automatically prompts me to open the linked workbook of my checkbook, and then it automatically refreshes the data; now it is no longer doing that, and I have no idea how or how to fix it and get it back to how it worked before. please help
I know where is the source, but it is not updating or refreshing. Not sure why. Keep reflecting #value!
Any suggestions if a ctrl + F search for .xl doesn't locate the cell(s)?
I break the links, but the files cannot be saved,,,,, it sucks
Thank you
Is there a way to remove all external links (including links in other sheets within the same workbook) with 1 click? Is there a macro to do it?
Hi! Yes, you might try going to File > Info > in the bottom right section, click where it says 'Edit Links to Files' > a box pops up where you can select 'Break Links' - you could try that, good luck!
@@ErinatTimeSavingTemplates It works, still I'd prefer a 1 click solution.
@@ErinatTimeSavingTemplates its not working in my file.
You are amazing, thank you!!!!!
Thank you for your feedback!
