LONG JUMP ROTATION - WHAT IS AND HOW TO MINIMISE ITS EFFECTS SO YOU CAN JUMP FAR

  • When you take-off in the long jump your body is subject to rotational forces - these can be either backward or forward.
    The former will result in a slower flight phase and you may get a "better" landing, although you may sit backward will have lost distance due to the braking that's happened in consequence to the backward rotation.
    The latter will result in the feet dropping early in the landing and in extreme cases will result in the jumper falling (even diving) forwards out of the pit on landing.
    In the video I explain further the causes of rotations and provide solutions and tips as to how to avoid both forms.
    The video features some of the top jumpers in the world as well as athletes I coach, such as Ivana Spanovic, Juan Miguel Ecchevarria and Miltiadis Tentoglou.

    Nice video John . Thank you. Do you have any vidoe footage of people jumping too high in the long jump because I can't find any . I believe there is no such thing as jumping too high in the long jump and I dispute the 22 degree take off angle . Your imput will be appreciated .

      Well all the data on LJ suggests a shallow take-off angle. The jumpers that look like they get more height jump longer ... their 22-degree take-off angle will climb more and more as they go further into the pit,
      It's very difficult to deliberately go for vertical hight at long jump take-off due to the speed of the take-off - invariably if you were to try to do this you would slow down.
      Jumpers that get more height really only take-off at 23-24 degrees if that - what they will have is more vertical velocity so they are naturally able to get more lift from their take-off leg and notably their eccentric capability at take-off. Ivana Spanovic has one of the better vertical take-off velocities as does Brittney Reese ...
      Much comes down to the innate qualities of the jumper and the way they set the take-off up.
      You'll not find too many people who will argue for a steeper take-off angle ... the prime reason is an I have noted the fact that the jumper will slow down by trying to jump "Up" rather than "out".

    are u still experiencing with triphasic training method? what do u think about it?

      Hi, hope all is well with you, and the answer is yes ... we implemented a version of it for most of the training year ... continuing through the season with a reduced volume. I didn't use the same protocols as Cal describes thinking that many of the programmes are perhaps too intense in terms of the frequency of the sessions (of course those in the book are for illustrative purposes). A big difference was implementing one of the twice weekly sessions into a sprint drills session which ended with iso, eccentric and plyo exercises in the main. I tended o mix the muscular actions into one session and not have distinct phases. ... I believe it worked all three of the senior athletes following the programme jumped really well - PBs and 2nd and third best jumps ever for example. Also developed.a few emphasis eccentric jump drills myself. So a thumbs up! And thanks

    You didn't say what exactly is forward rotation and if you are going to do so please make it simple
