How to Measure if the Floor is Level

- We have all been in a home before and felt like we were in a fun house. Other times there can be minor floor level issues that are sometimes hard to feel. An uneven floor is never a good thing but the first thing to do is see just how uneven it is. In this video we walk through how to measure the slope, or drop, in floor height by using just a laser level and a tape measurer.
A big thank you to ADA Instruments for supplying us with The Cube laser level. Find out more about it at the link below!

Don't want to do a bunch of math to find angles? Well here is a link that does all the math for you.

Thank you for the information and most importantly thank you for getting straight to the point.
I love short clear videos like this. Thanks for keeping it concise!
Thanks!! It has take a few years of practice to get our videos concise. Glad you appreciate it!
Wouldn’t you want to check the rooms slope in multiple different directions? Such as moving the laser to numerous different areas around the rooms corners in order to establish an idea of all the high and low spots? Great video as well! I usually use levels to figure out slope but the laser would be a lot faster
You could if you were dealing with sloping floors throughout a home. In this example we knew that we had rotten joists under the kitchen and bathroom and the rest and the floor joists and supports where good (based on our visual inspection from the crawlspace).
If you do move the laser around you will have to keep track of the height difference between the points where you move the laser too. For example one corner of the home May cover the living and dining room and when you move the laser to a bedroom you may set it on an area of the floor that is lower/higher than the point that the level was at when measuring the previous rooms.
Very useful video. Thank you
That is great to hear! Glad we could help!
Do you check the level of subfloor on the direction your laying the floors
You should be checking level in all directions not just the direction you are laying. However, in this scenario where we knew which way the floor was sloping than we focused in on measuring just that degree of slope.
@@RaptorRenovation if you are laying floating floors do u just check the direction you are laying the floor
Well, are you trying to level your floors ahead of time? Do you know how bad the floors are currently sloping?
@@RaptorRenovation floor is slopping across by 20mm
Over what distance? and are you wanting to fix the slope?
