My auntie has investigated our family tree over the years and found out that one of our ancestors way back is the mathematician John Venn who brought about the Venn diagram. Consequently hundreds of years later my dad became a maths master and ran a maths department in one of our local secondary modern schools. Sadly that is now gone. Years after that my brother turned out to be a skilled mathematician and my son is also pretty good as is my cousin. Strange how it appears to follow down the male side of my dads family.
Researching family history can be very interesting. A relative of mine pass away and I was asked to trace his relatives on my mothers side. This search involved finding relatives of an Aunt that married a Canadian and settled in Canada in the 1930’s. To cut a long story short, I found eight relatives I did not know off. When I made contact with the Canadian relatives, they wanted to know why the name McMath was used as a middle name in the past. It turned out that a John McMath was in a scotish regiment and was married in Chatham Kent, prior to being ordered to guard convicts being transported to Australia from Sheerness. One of his daughters (born in India) married and moved to Canada with her husband, which started the Canada family connection. Good luck Phil, with finding your tree. One word of warning, I did a tree for a friend and found an ancestor was hung in public for murdering his wife.
If you know approximately when the château/hotel was closed down by the police, why not contact the police station and ask them to look into their records. If you can obtain the specific date, go to your local library and search for news paper articles about the closing.
Great video. At 79 I just found 4 half siblings I had no idea I had. Search away.
Phil you’re so right about viewers loving history. Glad your home provides us with a mystery.
news archives, town hall archives and also have you thought of asking the local police if they have anything that they could share with you or point you in the right direction?
His problem is he doesn't appear to be extremely fluent in French written or spoken.
@@timothynorton6137 Phil has plenty of friends that do speak French and would help him
Be warned. Family history is addictive! I love it.
Sure do hope you find out why it was closed. Maybe remove the cement from the breather hole and send your scope in.
💕You should knock out that bricked up vent & put you camera through it💕
This might be a long shot, but the Templars were known for deep spiral staircases.
I've been wondering if you were going to get back to exploring the tunnels. As I remember you were going to wait because you were planning on another season of having guests. It would be very interesting to see them. Have you considered having a metal detectorist out to see what they could find? I'd also suggest speaking with the police department, if you haven't already. They may have some records still. At any rate, thanks for the update, and I look forward to seeing what you find. Cheers!
There must be some newspaper clips about the hotel/brothel or the police, or the family/people involved - look in the local newspaper archives online or hard copy in the library if not online. Newspapers are a great source of historical information about a house. The local "social" columns also tell what people were doing. They used to have those back then. Probably require a subscription but so worth it if you're looking for something like this.
A vaulted brick ceiling -- I wonder what still remains down below.🤔
Wine cellars?
Septic? more than likely
No the house wasn’t built a septic tank they just used the moat and no need for spiral stairs into a septic tank…
Are there church records re chateau previous members, school records, tax or count tallying?
A building there since 1100 there is bound to be remnants of cellar s from previous buildings as often they were left and only what you saw above ground was changed, the moat is later added so extensive rooms under ground will exist with pillars added for point loads in chateau rebuilds, our home z,1600 but ahome here back to 1100 and earlier as a building existed here in Exeter book ,part of the Doomsday book undertaken by william the Concurour in 1070s!we had a new floor put in as damp we hit and removed saxon floor of broken rotted sandstone slabs.
Have you looked to find a local historian in the town? Generally those people would gravitate to such a large building that could possibly have spectacular history.
great suggestion
I'm intrigued now as to the history of your CHATEAU
Dan was able to access copies of the reports from the fire department records regarding the fire that gutted the chateaux he is renovating.
Maybe you could see if the police department would allow a search back in their files to see if there is a report about closing the hotel.
Phil, you've uncovered some interesting facts, rumors. I'm looking forward to hearing more.
Cheers
Phil it’s sounding like a lot of places with this type of cellar. You’ll hear about all the tunnels across the world where ease of movement was ideal for traffickers. So much about to come out on that. Weeks or even days away. Lot been going on worldwide. I hope in your case the cellar was not for nefarious purposes. It made me think when the boy was sent out to play while the men had a meeting; the Masons maybe? Tangled web there Phil. You are doing something great with your family tree research. Please tell us if you come across some famous person 😄
Love hearing about the history! If those walls could talk… 😊
Love the history of your Chateau. I remember you had a little dig at it with Billy
Ancestry can be quite fascinating! Always good to know about our roots. 🙏❤️
Looking forward to hearing about new information on the chateau that you get. Closed by police??? Brothel … gambling… illegal liquors 😂.
Kinda fun thinking it could be any (or all) of those suggestions...
but then I live in the Klondike where it was the norm back in 'the day.' 🥳woohoo💃
My guess would be it was probably squatted at some point Not all squatters are vandals
Phil a spiral underground staircase could be Templar. 13ft was their width they used and some exist still.
Try to look at the local newspaper , if the police comes, they had notice that .
This is so interesting phil pleased you talking about the tunnels again thanks for sharing ❤
I love listening to the history of the Château…. Learning is always a good thing…
Awesome! My parents did start Researching family history some years ago and it truly is faschinating! Found out old realtives all the way from Denmark to Finland and Germany, not exactly what i did expect, but we even managed to track down to the first nobleman behind the name on my mothers side as well, and why he became a noble man, that one has always been a mystery to me.
Do my ancestry has been both fascinating and addictive. I am related to HenryVIII and William of Normandy. It is amazing the famous people I am related to. How we wound up in Texas is beyond me. Have fun! I love history.
How interesting I hope you can find out more Phil ❤
Phil, is there a local library that has the local newspaper files on microfiche? That would be my first suggestion! Someone in the library could help you.
It would help a lot to have an exact date for that though. Even just searching one year of a newspaper is a pretty daunting task unless the papers have been scanned and OCR'd.
I am adopted my dad fought in WW2 and my Uncles at Beaches of Normandy. One day I wish to visit .
Go for it!
Interesting history so far i hope you find out the rest.
Phil, all of these bits and pieces are so interesting. I wonder if there is anyone who worked at the hotel living nearby. The mystery of the history of the chateau is intriguing. Can’t wait to hear more.
How interesting, must have a lot of history.
Great episode!!! Hope you find out more! 😊
What about the spiral staircase found under the foundation of the added stairway? Could it be a stash of wine in a cellar. I have a huge challenge tracing my family because of adoption and even with all the reforms on access to preadoption birth certificates in my state the document by law is sealed. DNA reveals whoever were my relatives they came from France, England, and Ireland. What a combo.
Love to.hear about the history thank you guess there will be some.digging lol 😊❤😊😂
Phil, I have absolutely zero advice for you as to the chateau history. 😢 But whenever you share any insights in future RUclips videos, I will definitely watch (and give you a thumbs up!) 👍
I may even watch one of the annoying ads that break in when you're in the middle of a sentence.
Hi Phil I was wondering in the vent that is still open, is that near the room where you had all those damn wasps ???? might be you found the place they get in without realising, hope you get some info on this wonderful, place xxxx Hugs Dede xxx
Fascinating segment. Genealogy is fun. If you get stuck, I might be able to help.
Have you found original plans?
There are always multiple cars by chateau? Do you have a caretaker when you are away?
Would the local newspaper have reported the police closing the hotel down 😮 if only walls could talk. Good luck best wishes from Lynda ❤
I had a DNA test done and was I surprised?! I was so convinced that I was as Danish as one could be, but it turns out that I am 62% british.. I have no idea how that happened and I am looking forward to trying to find out one day.
The DNA stuff blew me away! They're doing ancient DNA sequencing now... bridging gaps. 🤯incredible
Very interesting 😊❤️👍
Hey Phil, I hope you can get more information on the Chateau, I wonder what lies beneath the vaulted ceilings under your Chateau. Hopefully, a viewer can get you what you're looking for. Good luck. Love from N.Y.
Do your local libraries still have microfiche machines?
There may be old news articles from the 70s that you could find that have not been computerized. A lot of local newspapers didn't bother. But they may still have the old microfiche machines and the old films that you can look at. And if you have the year it was closed down, that'll narrow your search to just news articles from that year.
How fascinating Phil to find tidbits bits of information re your château and family.
Wish you success on finding more on both parts of life experiences.❤❤❤
Oh, this is intriguing 🎉.
Hope you get some news so you can update us all ❤
Very interesting information and thank you for sharing what you are doing and what everyone has said about the chateau! Locals that have lived there would be wonderful to hear from them
Wow love knowing more about your home❤
Let's see, the 1970's. It's sex, drugs or rock parties. Please keep us updated on what you find. Lighting needs a companion.
Exciting... really exciting. I highly recommend people try the free trial. A family member & I did ours & I was blown away by the info & who I'm connected to 9+ generations back. I've 1st to 4th cousins all over the UK & EU contact me, filling in more gaps. Then had my DNA sequencing done 🤯seriously cool connections!! Constantly receiving updates (pics & docs) as info is added... no end to the neat stuff you find out. Best of luck to you in your quest for knowledge.
I think it was a Brothel Phil, I wouldn't touch the taps mate! seriously, have fun tracing your family tree, always an interesting pastime. If you get enough information you could compile it into a book about the chateau, another chapter in the local history.
I have always loved history of all kinds but family history is my addiction! LOL! I have so much about my dad's family now that I need to figure out a way of writing a book - one that would be interesting, not boring. For general family history searching in the States and Norway, I have found a lot. For locations, it helped to know who lived there. I hope you find more local info soon! I did a lot of searching just using my great grandpa's name and location and found some fun things - like he apparently didn't understand the importance of fences in Dakota Territory, since his neighbor put in the paper that he was not my great grandpa's (and a few other neighbors) cowboy. My great grandpa came from an island owned by his family. No fences needed!
'Below The Plains' is a neat channel on YT. Two guys dig middens & backyard 🚽 'deposits' in the old Dakota Territory pioneer towns. They uncover alot of history w/ names & dates of who lived where and what they did... find really interesting items, the 1800s onward.
Would be very interesting to know why they closed it Phil. Perhaps ask the local police (they may not have been around then but the would know what police was in the area then if you know the year). Lovely video Phil. Till the next one, have a lovely day.
That’s a fabulous idea. I do hope some locals contact you with the recent history of your house. I live in an old stables that was for the dairy farm so the milk could be delivered by the horses. My place has been an illegal gambling casino. A flop house in the depression where they rented beds out. It’s been a brothel and a furniture restorers. I know this because an old man has lived here all of his life and as a young boy he was the one who alerted the illegal casino that the police were in the vicinity. He was a called a cockatoo. Yes, I live in Sydney Australia. It makes it such a difference to know this. I’m also old enough to go to the place where they processed the milk and the reason why the stables were there in the first place and before they shut the dairy milk processing plant before they knocked it down. I find that bit bizarre. Good luck. You never know what history you will find. Thank you. May you all please take care and stay safe. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩
That’s such an interesting place you live in!! Thanks for sharing that!
Interesting! 😮 hope you have a follow up video and we can then know if this was a former drug den or what!
I think the early history is interesting, you could try looking at the IGN maps (OS) for location/positions/structures of significance.
Heath & Safety / Food standards breach if that was around in the 70's maybe?
Glad you got a little information about the Chateau. I wish it wasn't so dangerous to explore the tunnel under the house. I bet it was closed because water was leaking in from the moat. Hugs, Kathy USA 🇺🇸
Wow Phil, loads of history in this video, both social and personal. I hope you do find more family members and answers to a few questions ( I certainly have a few in my family 😉 ) it gets quite engrossing. As for Hitler going up your driveway, well not sure about that, but Himmler may have done so. You did a trip to Pegasus bridge a few years ago which was excellent. I have always wanted you to do more on the impact locally, as you are very good at explaining history. I hope you find out more about the chateau in the 70's. Could it have been a "den of iniquity", or just a dodgy restaurant? 🤔😄
"den of iniquity" Just the thought makes me want to visit. "dodgy restaurant"... erm... not so much.🤢 lol
Have you tried the local newspapers of the time. They can be a source of great information.
Awesome. Hope u learn more.
Very cool Phil. Did they tell you anymore about that spiral staircase??
Good morning way up there ,
I’m coming to you from a very cold 🥶 damp day down here ….
Aww that’s soo awesome finding out about your Château’s history …
I love anything history and family trees ❤ sadly I’m with Another brand … I’ve just found my true blooded family and 1/2 sisters etc …now I’ve got some interesting Skeletons in my closet🤣😂
…
Does your community have a Historical Society? A lot of those institutions have some wonderful documents, plans, and drawings of important buildings, which certainly your house ought to be.
Did the house get used as a "house of ill-repute"? That could be why the cops closed it down; that or an illegal gambling venue.
BEST
You need to have a free beer night at your tavern for retired policemen. Lube them up and get them talking.
Hope you find more interesting facts👍🤗
Love Sue❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
Dans les journaux locaux de l époque de la fermeture de ĺhotel, tu trouveras l information 😊😊😊
That ought to be pretty interesting. I know my biological dad was a traveling poodle and I have several half sisters/brothers I have never actually met. Maybe one day who knows. The Chateau might have some serious history now that would be interesting to read about. You will have to let us know what you find out though. Have a great day
My grandfather was also a busy man. I love the description "traveling poddle" perfect. Lol
Hope you find a lot of information. Who knows whats going on behinde those walls 🤣
Love it!
Ooh, I like a mystery 🤔why would the police shut it down? So hope you find out more.
Interesting, thank you for sharing 😊
Very interesting! Hope you find answers to these questions.
Is there a history of the house video on here? I’d love to know about it.
Hey that's a pretty fancy car you have parked in your driveway!!!
He has done a bit about it on his car channel!
The @@stephjezo6470the sports and the range rover is Phil's, don't know about any other cars.
Everything in the driveway is mine; I unfortunately have quite the growing car collection at the moment….
Fascinating about the Chateau... wonder what the deal was... I'm curious now. As for my family history... My Aunt on my mother's side has traced our family history back quite a bit... but as for my father's side... so the story goes ...... My father's great-grandfather came from somewhere out east but not exactly sure where... But he was 12 years old and his father was a horrible man. Mean and vicious and often beat him... well... he and his sister were supposed to plant the field... which they did... however his sister did a terrible job and the rows she did were terribly crooked... and he knew that his father would beat her for that... so he told her to tell their father that he did it. And he ran away from home... (which we do know he did run away from home at the age of 12)... well he met up with a nice family which was heading to the North West... well... they were super nice to him and helped him and pretty much took him in... He refused to tell them his last name. Eventually, he took their last name... he stayed with them and helped them homestead in North Dakota somewhere. So... there is the problem right there... we have no idea what his real last name was. So our "family" last name... kinda isn't really ours????? I don't know if that makes sense. But yeah... don't know who he was for sure. No one ever learned what his real name was. So if we trace back well ... we just find out about the history or that family... not his real family... how strange is that?
Can you get a FOI (freedom of information) or its equivalent to the local police for historical grounds?
Surely by now any person that would feel that if that info is out would hurt them would be deceased.
BTW how is the Puppy 😁
Could you access the police records to find out why they clised it down?
Have you looked in the local archives and old, local newspapers? Obvious, but you didn't mention them.
Phil are you able to go to the police to enquire from their archives on why it was closed.
I didn't understand what you said about the caretaker and WWII German soldier?
What about local Police or a retired Policeman
😁💚💚💚
Dan helped you steph ,errr you didn't really do much 😅😅😅
So interesting. I bet it was closed down due to brothel activity lol
Was that actually illegal in France at that time? In some European countries it was (and is) simply a relatively tightly regulated business, as legal as any other in the service industry (even though it's often suspected to attract more illegal side activities than many other businesses).
Edit: I looked it up and it became illegal soon after WWII and still is. Certainly a possibility.
Hope your able to find the facts about the Chateau.
For the locals to contact you have to advertise in french. I don’t think old people know English to answer you.
🏆❤️💎🇩🇰
La knocking shop?
Bye bye Alan👋🏼
You look like your grandfather
I can’t remember the original age of this place…? It’s SO beautiful though. Maybe you could only offer it to view to Patreon viewers instead of the general public? Just an idea
Want some real surprises, do your DNA. 😏
Police archives maybe...
Brothel?
