I just take Chris Do's advice... if you're not laughing at how high it is, then it's not enough.
Thank you for putting actual dollar amounts, not sure why so many educators shy away from talking numbers!! THANK YOU.
It's VERY annoying and shady when they avoid those questions.
@@onuohaudeagha1255 yes my Naija bro
What has always worked for me are fixed project rates. I apply value based pricing principles. I make a detailed breakdown for the client. I also learned early to detail how many revisions go into what they are paying.
It also helps to be honest with yourself. Be aware of the amount of work you're bound to do and ask yourself if you are happy with what you intend to charge. I tend to charge a bit more to cover this aspect. I ran into situations where I felt I half-assed a project just to be done with it, because I agreed on an unsatisfying cost and wanted to move on to other projects as fast as possible. It's bad and unhealthy. I charge more to ensure I keep myself enticed and invested in the project I am entrusted with. This way I know I deliver the quality expected by my client.
For people confused with the "hygiene" part of the pie-chart.
Let me ask you this. Would you trust in the professionalism of a person who doesn't care about their image and taking care of themselves?
People put a lot more trust in those who show that despite being highly active on the professional side can also make sure to find the time to look after themselves. This proves they have great organizational and scheduling skills and can properly prioritize what's important. It shows you have your mind in the right place. The way you show that you love and respect yourself inspires the thought that you apply the same behaviour in regards to your work.
Very good point!
Yes. There’s nothing worse than sitting next to someone who smells. 🤢
Thanks for this
Fair point. Similar to what my current mentor says (butchered quote), "If your personal life/needs are struggling, your business is going to be struggling". I've personally experienced the ramifications of pushing myself for work and then getting physically sick (thereby screwing over my future work progress). Not a great approach.
Such a good video. Figuring out how to price myself for my clients is one of the biggest problems with my business growth. You guys nailed it!
I completely agree with the specialized way of operating as a freelance graphic designer. This is how I was able to triple my clients. AND the reliability is so so true. That will keep the word-of-mouth in that industry's community going which will make you even more of an authority in that space. Thanks for the awesome video.
I am a senior 2D CAD designer in LA and the points you mentioned are spot on! I should definitely check the Freelance Manifesto book as well.
Thank you for all the great videos on the Futur!
Hey Mathew, this is very useful. Especially the part of what to expect at various levels.
Love your videos, Matt! I really liked how you listed the pros and cons for each way of charging, I've been a freelance designer and illustrator for years now and every time someone asks "ok how much" it makes me really uncomfortable, 'cause I don't dig the business part as much and it's not as exciting as the "creative" part for me, it actually makes me suffer a little bit so it's nice to see this kind of content. I've been working that inside my head ever since I found TheFutur's youtube channel, and I have to say you guys really help me a lot. I'm not so good with words and describing what I know in my guts, so the way you put the words together is very helpful... So I just wanted to thank you, Matt & everyone else out there making my life less hard.
Huge value in this video! I appreciate it as a freelance videographer. My motto is to deliver an agency like experience in terms of deadlines and communications, even though I am only one person.
Super handy, thank you for this!
Solid advice Matthew, talked about variations of that chart before.
- Reliable
- Talented
- Easy to work with
If you've got those three aspects you're the unicorn. Unicorns make $$$
Love this
Matthew, that's a very useful video. The topic is short and on point! 👍
I would like to see more content like this. Quick and useful tips for freelancers.
Great share Matthew - this is spot on. I always say that people have to want to work with you - there's so much talent out there that you can't rely on talent alone. Admittedly when I'm hiring a creative for our team, I'm looking at their work first, experience second, and then we have an interview to discover their personality. Reliability is unfortunately something that has to be tested - and is what the first 90 days are all about in an in-house team position.
Thank you Matt great information and very useful to have the $ amounts there as well. Like you have mentioned using a project rate with defined revisions has really helped me to grow my design business!
the timing of these videos is spot on
This video gives me an answer to my current problem. Thanks Matthew
I kept struggling with this . Thank you extremely
Great information! I wish you would also mention the rising costs of inflation and other living costs. Those rates are the same as for the past 15 years that many motion studios have fixed. But in my experience, for the past 10 years, many newer companies have put in place overtime rates (like in other industries) like 150% (after 8 hours) or 200% on the weekends, I salute those companies. :)
I really appreciate your content ^^
The Futur is saving my butt once again :')
Helpful advice, thank you!
Great advices! Thanks a lot!
Very informative. Great content! Good price points and geographical factors in economic awareness.
Thanks Matt, I find this useful!
Good job there bro.... I would say a ball park number for sure... Fantastic video matt... Thanks
Very helpful, thanks!
5,,000 for a logo!! I need to raise my prices. lol
Sorry, but this is cheap, depending on the client. I might be much for a small restaurant client, but indeed I know agencies that took 80.000 € for a logo. The client does not always pay for the actual output - logo - but also for the process (e.g. workshops) and for the supplemental deliverables, like a complete design guide, and so on.
You’re creating their brand image for the next 10 years, consider it compensation for that time lol
I'm working with design agencies as an in-house designer(we're the client), reliability is really important !!
Really insightful some of those rates you mentioned in Kenya some are earning that in a month.
Very nice tips. Rally made me think about these.
Thanks for the insight.
Much needed video for me right now.
wonderful insight Mathew, but here in western Africa, 'rate' takes a huge chunk of that pile too.
Thank you very much for the content as always Matthew! I’ll be graduating in a couple of weeks now , really looking forward to the real world holds.
P.S : Not sure if anybody will agree with me on this, but if I were you, I would add a black background over the PIE chart so that you don’t surprise your viewers with bright white background flashing suddenly especially for those who’re watching your videos in the dark (me)
Just saying. Don’t have to take my feedback.
Good stuff as always, Matthew. I agree that project-based is the best option, though you still can't avoid those clients who just love revising.
Still having a hard time finding those 4-5 digit clients. Tried to negotiate on some in the past but as expected, they backed-off either furiously or stealthily.
Anyways, just keep on keeping on!
Same here. For freelancers, anything above $1K for a logo design and the fear of losing the trust and long-term relationship with the client kicks in. In a over saturated market of logo designers asking from $50 to $300, unless you deal from a high-end agency with large companies, most mid-size business and individuals tend to run away feeling cheated when asking for anything above $500-1K, let alone $5K!! I'd love to see a video about how to break that huge gap between the $500 and $5.000 mark. I tend to educate the client and help them to understand the long-term value, but they also do their research and approach other designers and have a rough idea of the time needed to produce a logo.
Awesome content!! 👍👍👍
Awesome video matt! Do you have any tips on how to transition from giving hourly rates to project rates?
DUDE! So true about the project rate. It's is giving the client unlimited revisions and I've spent more time than I would have ever thought. Should've specified the revision allowance! Going to get out of this by setting a hard and fast deadline. Charging hourly for next projects, we'll see how that goes..
This was helpful, thanks! It would be cool to get examples for different freelance services e.g. graphic, video, writer...
Greatly explain 🤗
Thank you!
love you man
Thanks.
I prefer working on an hourly basis because as a Digital Marketing Specialist, sometimes I have to make lots of research. And as you said, the demand also matters. I make sure to get jobs with skills not many marketers experience in. This way, I get paid higher.
Few years ago I watched your videos but I am confused among my stream so I decided to become a designer now I am catching your old and new video every day it is so fun to watch your videos keep up the good and hard work My love to futur team.....
Hi Mathew. Would you mind sharing what platforms you are using to acquire your talent? Who are your outsourcing partners?
Gold content.
I am curious if you have advice around the "hygiene' aspect of things. I'm a clean person in terms of personal hygiene but I certainly wouldn't describe myself as organized, I'm naturally chaotic. It wasn't really a problem until this year when all of a sudden multiple people are wanting me to work on multiple projects at once. Do you have videos based on this piece of the pie that I have just missed? Just around creating organisation in your workspace and workflow? Also, really helpful to see not just the rates but what you expect from people at different pay rates so thanks for that.
Love the pie chart
Dope!!
Got tied up and I missed the live 😭 Is it available?
Project consistency
Wish this was true in Miami, FL. It seems it is quite a bit opposite. It s all about low rates. I am pretty sure it has to do with state politic taxes and mind set that slave master have built here! Therefore it really makes it difficult for design professionals of all levels! After working in NYC for 5 years and knowing the design value and the rates Miami and souther Florida is a tough cookie to crack!
Great video! Please explain hygiene?
I have a question. What about people who live in SE Asia? How do we find a market with enough demand for our talents that we can command what we are worth? Or the only option is to move to a western country like the USA, the UK, or an EU country?
How would the day rates you listed (200, 400, 600) apply to project rates?
I'm from Malaysia, but just because of this people always asking for a very low price from me, and compare my price with India or Indonesia freelancer, but they don't know our currency and expenses are different... and this is why I'm very confuse with pricing...
Hey awesome Futur community, do you think these daily rates are applicable/transferable for freelance real-estate photographers in NYC? Some context: I'm currently scaling my real estate marketing asset company ( we provide videography, floor plans, photography, 3D virtual tours) and have two new freelance photographers. Both are junior, I've trained them from the ground up, they have their own gear, they don't need to edit- they only shoot, sketch and capture the RAW photos and footage for us...we edit everything. I appreciate any thoughts, input and questions. I want to make it a win win, all 'round.
I like the project rate method
Good to hear!
I think the rate should be a much larger % in the pie, unless your client has a shit ton of cash like Apple.
Excellent video! One questions! When you say 5000 $ for a logo what do you actually include in that? If There’s a video please link it I COULDNT find it
the logo as a vector file, colors, usage guidelines.
The Futur thanks! Would love to see a video about this
Man I have problems with pricing although I provide good quality! how can I charge more?
I didn't get the hygiene part of the pie graph. I'm sorry, what's it for? (Thank you for this video though, very informative!)
Yeah explain to us Matthew ?
I have a feeling it's just there to illustrate just how small the rate is in the wider importance in comparison to other things... so like even down to something as specific as someone's hygeine, you'd literally be but off by that before you were put off by someone's rate if they have all the other qualities in the pie chart. This is likely because everybody in freelance worries so much about how much to charge when in reality there are so many other things you have control over to justify whatever rate you want. If you do really, really good work and have great talent and personality etc. etc. you can charge what you want and rate becomes less significant to the client when deciding to hire you.
Spad i think if you look like a sewer rat then people dont want to work with you cuz they think u are unorganized, lazy or unprofessional
This is sometimes referred to as file hygiene or workflow hygiene. Matthew is spot on - your files have to be organized and clear as well as the way you deliver final products. If I open your file and its a mess, unlabeled, poorly set up, etc. It's a no from me.
@@PhenMas *Everyone else is saying something different.*
Unlimited revision cycles for project was the hell that I had been living for the past 2 months... Until I finally told the client (literally this morning) that any further edits were going the be extra. I had literally logged over 60 hours for what should have been a 20 hour project at best because the client couldn't make up their mind on what they liked. Combine that with the fact that the client's "visual contributions" were an absolute tacky shitshow and they would NOT budge from abstaining using these things, I finally had enough.
Either we put this thing to bed and out to press, or you can pay my day rate... Lo & behold - the client emails me less than 30 min later saying they were "satisfied" with how the project looked and to send it off for pre-production press samples. Funny how a client changes their mind when you put them on the clock.
Lesson learned - ALWAYS put something in your contracts to limit editing/revisions rounds to prevent a situation like this.
WWE has John Cena, same the futur has Matthew Encina. Professor Do where are you
I'm here Hani. still dropping videos on the regular.
My bad I chew the last word (stands)
Professor Do where are you stands?
@@thefutur I mean to say you are the Bruce Lee of the futur :)
i asked 650 euros for new years card printable + web one with animation. was that too high price? they declined me for someone else.
I find these rates quite low for North America. Maybe it’s because I’m in the motion design industry.
For a 8-9 hour day, I’ve seen more:
Junior $350
Mid $500
Expert $800+
That’s the problem of putting out a number. Everyone’s experience will vary.
@@thefutur Yup! But thanks for sharing and opening a space for transparency. :) Everyone's experience will vary, that's what makes it worth sharing. Anyway, great video! That pie chart was great, very memorable way of explaining. ❤️
About tree fiddy
Good video but the music gave me the heebeejeebees
I charge my translation task on a project rate. How do you charge?
*Ni Hao*
Devil's Advocate 뭐래 Korean
am a cool person. thats why I charge by projects.. I hate doing math..LOL... great video.. HMMM about Hygiene.. No wonder I get a lot of freelance every time I put my cologne..... kidding!!
These rates are waaaay too low imo. Jr designers should be at least 300, if not 350. $200/day will give you terrible clients and cheap work. Nowadays, most people with experience are saying "do not start too low" so rates have gone up accordingly
I remember someone on in an earlier vid(year ago?) called me out that personality didn't mean shit (yeah I know I know...design chops and reliability have to be skills). I wonder if he/she is eating their own words now?
I don''t wanna name the agency and candidate, but when a cocky fk from Art Center interviewed with my in-law who's a CD at an NYC ad agency... he/she didn't like this candidate's personality. let's just say he didn't get past 10 minutes of the interview. lmao.
5k for a logo?🤩
Everyone needs to read win without pitching manifesto
Yes
5k for a logo.....wow
making $400 a month
what is getting in your way of charging more?
@@thefutur my mind, I know it
@@thefutur and poor clients :)
$5,000 dollars for a logo... someday lol
Unless you're chris do
@@manoja9972 i hope i can close projects like that too. i know i can and i will.
A few things to keep in mind on your journey to accomplishing this goal:
Charge the client based on their company. If they make more money, they’ll usually spend more. I’ve seen Chris discuss this in the past.
Often it’s not the logo that goes for that high, but the story and context you create for it. Anyone can make a logo, but not everyone can make a logo that’s important and serves a true purpose beyond just “branding.”
It’s totally possible! Good luck.
Hahah imagine not getting hired because you are dirty
hahaha That's crazy!!
It does happen.
Bad breath, not taking a shower, stinky, dirt under the fingernails, wax in the ears, gas, etc, etc. All signs of a loser.
5,000 a logo wtf kinda logos you making bro 🤣🤣
$500 / hr
You are only as good as your last job.
