The Amazing Digital Circus seems to be getting unapologetic praise across both my friend circle and broader social media, being touted as one of the best animated projects to come out in some time, the fanart is rampant and the chatter over whats possibly to come is everywhere.
Much to my confusion the show I ended up watching felt very... very different from the one I was described. To put it bluntly, lots of the characters felt like they lacked depth, and it was rare that the show could steal a chuckle of me. Perhaps it's a symptom of getting overhyped from all of the good reviews from viewers it's getting online but suffice to say,
While The Amazing Digital Circus does have issues, it's not all bad.

Her: Babe, you better not be a Boss Door video.
My stupid ass:
Man, thank you. I also didn't quite get the sheer amount of hype and praise that this pilot got. Although I am expecting the quality to go up the more episodes get released, and it's certainly an interesting project plus anything indie is an absolute win.
I agree with this, though the voice actors and animators did great but it feels like they focused more on the character's designs then the actual characters
I mean it’s still the pilot, y’know?
The pilot doesn't do anything radical but its not supposed to either. Its clear that the main goal of the episode was to showcase the world, characters, and basic premise while sparingly tease the dark nature it may or may not go more in-depth to later on. It's also pretty funny and it would be a great change of pace if it didn't try to go the dark lore dumbass theory path so many indie titles go and stay simple but who knows. It was a good pilot and it has good character design, voice acting, and visuals why do people always want to demand an insano style plot when its the first episode?
i liked the humor 😔
Same
I think the show is a bit too hyped by its community, i myself enjoyed the pilot especially the animation, nonetheless is great to hear about its flaws from you Boss Door little to no people talk about them, i feel like people praise it too much for what it is and give others a very high expectation about it.
Very cool review!
While I didn't find the humor all that bad, I do agree they could have had a small bit of character development over some screen time for jokes, specially Zooble who got almost no screentime compared to the others.
Something that kind of rubs me though was the encounter scene with the abstracted; when Raggatha falls on the ground and asks Pomni for help, the creature just stands there doing nothing for too long with no apparent reason, and for the situation that Raggatha is in, she is too calm and composed when asking for help. Overall, that and the chase scene that followed were really slow paced, same with the Gloink Queen scenes, but they're not a major problem. It *is* still a pilot, after all.
Same
Mid is incoming. Reading the description, youre really just not getting the notion of this being a pilot, and a pilot is a set up for the general plot to be expected. Its been stated on social media before that the shows intention is to explore these characters more in depth as the series goes on, you literally cannot be judging it like this so early, its beyond unfair.
I enjoy the premise and what the set up to getting to know these characters is. And you shouldnt be so hypercritical on something that hasn't even left the pilot stage.
True, I do think that the Pilot will just stay like it is as a first episode but it is still that, the first episode
Thanks for being subscribed for a year, I appreciate it.
While I agree that a pilot is not an easy thing to make, as I said in the video it does feel like a lot of the time is wasted on things that don't quite land, or things that reiterate on things we already know. So even with future episodes in mind it does seem like there's a lot of missed potential even if the voice acting and visuals are well done.
A pilot is supposed to set up the essentials for your show- to get the audience acquainted with everything. I think the pilot does a poor job at this (separating the ensemble cast so they barely interact is a big factor). Not letting us get to know the characters with the promise that they'll be explored later is not a good way to go about your first episode. Why is it that it can be praised to high heaven but any criticism can be waived away as "it's just a pilot". If anything a poor pilot only gives you a bad impression of what's to come, it's reasonable to say so.
i think they literally can be judging it like that so early
I see your point, but I still think the design and branding is what's selling it.
Kinger has gotta be my favorite, and true, some characters lack depth, but tbh, after going through some stories, I found that to be ok in some circumstances.
Pomni really needs work as an MC though. All I know about her is that she's traumatized.
(and she should be when she looks herself up)
Same for me Powni is a little underwhelming, but omg another Kinger lover!
Something something it's just the pilot and unfortunately the massive popularity has I think warped some expectations of what it is, when in reality only the full series could probs meet those inflated expectations something something. I enjoyed it personally, did NOT at all expect the huge boom in popularity. If nothing else, at least it seems pretty guaranteed to have a full season funded lol.
1:24 uhhhh im pretty sure that wasn't supposed to be a joke maybe im stupid but hmmmmmmm
Just sort of a weird example?
yeah that one wasnt supposed to be humorous
You didn’t like the humour?? Oddly enough, I rarely laughed so much with a web series!
Honestly same I guess it's just not his type of humor
i like gangle and kinger but theres not enough of them and there is a lot of sitting around not doing much in the pilot which isnt very exciting despite the premise
That IGN 6 in the thumbnail 💀
Not everything can have a realistic depiction of Incest, it happens
@@YeprilesteR?
@@YeprilesteRwhat is blud yapping about 😭
Hah it was a joke about the Coffin Of Andrew And Leyley
@@YeprilesteR Ok and wtf has coffin to do with The Digital Circus
I said this on another video but If the show wanted me to be invested in the horror aspects, they shouldn’t have revealed so soon that Pomni can’t take off the headset. Since she’s the audience surrogate, it would’ve been more immersive if she spent the first half of the episode playing along, because it’s just a game. This would’ve given us time to see how Pomni acts when she isn’t a nervous wreck.
There would’ve been so much more impact if say, Pomni nonchalantly tried taking the headset off when Ragatha was being attacked by an abstract monster, and only then does she realize she can’t get it off, meaning she’s fucked and in actual danger. But instead she’s uneasy, suspicious, and ready to escape from the get go, so none of the dark elements are all that surprising when they happen cause the character is already expecting them.
Great vid!
1:30 bro? out of all the bad jokes aimed at kids it smoothened over so they arent cheesy you chose the scene that is not a gag but character development? are you okay?
pomni is actively trying to get out for the whole half hour she was in the digital world, and with her seeming a bit shy it would be farfetched to create a situation to know more about her
everything else i pretty much agree with
what a big chunk of the glitch fandom like is the insane amount of theory potential, in background and some minor unexplained character actions you can piece out a lot of the world and character building. think of their works as fnaf, but with less unique storytelling and them being fully aware they are dealing with children. its good, but not as good as its sudden popularity. cant explain it in any other way than effective hype building
Yeah, idk why they put that in, Very clearly not a joke or gag.
i feel like its her tone and the way shes trying to say it casually makes it feel like a joke
Yeah IM PRETTY SURE this was not a gag
I really wish people who are busy overhyping Digital Circus would realize that Glitch Productions has other great 3D animation projects, like Murder Drones, which have not been getting nearly as much attention despite reaching the same quality standard long before Digital Circus. It just feels unfair to those earlier beautiful productions.
To be honest, the only reason the humour might not land is that it's not really targeted at the normal person. It's definitely more of a humour for people who are a lot more tuned into the internet. Or, just in a sense, cartoony, and/or impracticle, rude, random, humour. Kind of like memes.
algorithmic comment because im too tired to try and be funny right now
Go unlock the kid on super meat boy
haha, one day!
You know it's popular because of something other than good writing because it has only 1 episode and even the greatest episode 1's of all time aren't good enough to deserve that much popularity.
Something i kinda dont like is that people dont seem to realize. This is a indie pilot, not an actual episode. Yet they except it to be like the first episode of a huge tv series. Go look at cartoon network and nick's pilots for their shows. Most of them look pretty dann bad and was really basic, They where backed by the investment of huge companies. The fact digital circus even got this far is amazing, it should be judged based on the fact its not made by a huge studio, its a pilot. Its like comparing a 100 milion company to a bake sale. People take the pilot too seriously, nothing gets to have flaws anymore.
You didnt do this tho. I think you did this respectfully, you clearly explain what you liked and what you didnt. You didnt bash the show unfairly. You just said what didnt fit your likings and what bugged you. And well not everyone is gonna like something and thats alright. Not liking something isnt the same as judging something unfairly
0:15 Really bro? In front of my ENA plushie?
I disagree.
Well that's good to know great review buddy!
I am definitely not Sugand
1:30 "the jokes werent that funnt" *shows what is clearly not a fucking joke and is (when actually watched correctly) the best scene in the PILOT for this SHOW that HASNT BEEN RELEASED YET.*
It was bad.
To save those who dont want to read long texts the effort:
I disagree with video.
Jokes not actually jokes.
Jokes = Deep Lore.
Well, id have to disagree with the joke part on a universal level, theyre not meant to be a joke, theyre meant to be lore hidden behind the supposed "humor". Most especially ragatha's breaking point, i think that wasnt meant to be a joke in the first place, its supposed to set the seriousness of the situations of the characters while trying to escape from the severity itself when you look at it at a narrative perspective...
I think Most of what one would usually think is a joke, is actually not a joke, i think its meant to tell the story itself specifically on how the characters are trying to COPE, ESCAPE, and stay MENTALLY STABLE..
Those jokes arent targetted for the AUDIENCE, theyre targetted for the characters themselves which is meant to narrate the relationships between them, like how jax makes "humorous" names for the other characters that youd might see as a joke but is actually a story in itself of how jax as a CHARACTER sees others. Or like the "humorous" things Caine has done or said, which actually tells more on how borderline UNSTABLE he is himself as an AI tasked to manage humans whose minds work completely different to him. Or how Ragatha hasnt even made a verbal or action joke at all throughout the entire series and the only humor shes contributed was through how the animators made some funny small details in animation. Kinger's "joke" aspect is how insane he is with his eyes wandering off, his erratic behaviour and cut off screams and how he interacts with other characters, but thats not really a joke is it, the wandering eyes, how he doesnt normally recognize gangle immediately and then screams when he does cus he was startled, forgetting things and screaming again by being startled by gangle and how jax asked how he was a digital expert and then hes like "digital what" are symptoms of DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER, his mind trying to escape from the current reality, and his INSECT COLLECTION hinting to him being a software developer that was meant to fix the BUGS inside the digital circus.
Anyways this is getting long.
My point is.
Most of the "jokes" that you say are flat arent really supposed to be jokes to begin with, theyre meant to tell little tiny stories of their own that delves deeper into the lore of the characters. They may supposed to seem like a joke but they arent made to make you laugh most of the times, their humorous design is meant to tell a story.
