The way our English teacher used to explain the N word in literature was, it was better to say it in context to the material, so as not to whitewash history and pretend these weren't bigoted people and bigoted times, as some kids would take people saying "The N word" literally and then wonder why people got offended at all...then you have English teachers having to give History lectures to try and contextualise it....however, I can see why it's a fucked up situation anyway you try to navigate it.
