Normandy Veterans Association with Glen Waverley Secondary College

This service commemorates the Allied landings in Normandy, France on 6 June 1944. Better known as 'D-Day', this remains the largest amphibious landing in history with almost 200,000 men involved on the first day of the invasion alone. This day is now considered to mark the true beginning of the liberation of Europe. In the following weeks, the Allies would fight out of the Normandy beach heads to push the Germans back through France.
While most Australians were involved in the Pacific theatre by 1944, some 3000 took part in the Battle of Normandy. Most were part of the Royal Australian Air Force, serving with Bomber Command, landing paratroopers or providing air defence. A small number of Royal Australian Navy personnel were also serving with the British Royal Navy. 14 Australians were killed on D-Day, with many more losing their lives in operations related to the Allied invasion of France.
The Normandy Veterans Association are supported by students and staff of Glen Waverley Secondary College each year.
