  • Rollerskates are fun for the roller rink and skating trail but have you ever thought of Rollerskating as a way of active transportation in your city? In this episode of The Skate Outdoors I take you along with me on my skate downtown to an appointment during rush hour! Yikes!

    You're brave!
    I'm terrified of skating around traffic. 😊

      Start with skating on the street in a low traffic neighborhood. Then you work up to quiet street crossings. That’s the hardest part, the street crossings 😄 Maybe a video for another day.

      @@TheSkateOutdoors All the roads I've tried skating on are super rough... am I just a wimp or are some dramatically better than others? (Looks like basic asphalt to me... my wheels are 78A)

      @TheSkateOutdoors  Месяц назад +1

      @kplicanic some are better, but only because they are less weathered. I’m in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada and winters ice is very hard on the roads. The more you skate, the rougher surfaces you can handle. There are some that are too rough though. This gives me an idea for a video!

    Great video, really encouraging. You showed how achievable, and not so intimidating, this mode of transportation could be. Thanks for sharing this relaxing trip.

      Aw thanks for the feedback on the video Jodie! It’s basically walking except that you’re rolling. Being able to control speed and stop quickly is the key to freedom outdoors on skates!

    I need to get back to skating again. I only have a bicycle and skates for transportation. But I'm not advanced enough to skate much of anywhere yet, so I will have to wait until I'm more comfortable before trying the commuting on skates. I imagine it's an awesome feeling to do it though!

      It’s just about putting hours on your skates. Experience builds confidence. Also, finding the easiest routes is so important. Bike trails and protected lanes are the best bet.

    I do this all the time! I skate to the thrift store, salon, family dollar...everywhere I can, LOL! I've gotten to know my town pretty good, where to skate and whatnot. We're moving this weekend (after 9 years) and I'm a little nervous to see what the roads and sidewalks are like.
    I am really excited that there's a roller rink a mile away from our new place! I was a total rink rat growing up but haven't been to one in 35 years! They have an 18+ Adult Skate on Thursday nights so I can't wait to check that out!
    But I will ALWAYS skate outside when I can. I fell in love with it last year when I bought a pair of skates (& outdoor wheels) for my 50th birthday! People probably think I'm crazy when they see me bouncing and swaying to the music in my ears, LOL!
    Great video!

      I feel like this is the most inspiring comment. Thanks for sharing that. It’s so much better when you can ride a bike or walk it out first just so there’s no big surprises. Gotta have a back up plan of sandals in the backpack . Then it’s all good to go! I’m sure you’ll find all the good streets and paths at your new location!

      I m always scared because i m not the best skater yet to skate next to cats and maybe fall.

    • @TheSkateOutdoors
      @TheSkateOutdoors  2 месяца назад

      @jejeanine161 that’s legitimate. Start on a residential street where traffic is low. Skate against the flow of traffic so you can see the cars coming and they can see you. Stop or slow right down before they approach. The best skill you can teach yourself is how to stop quickly. Work on gaining confidence with that and skating will feel as comfortable and safe as walking.

    This is the content I love to see! I love your leisurely trail skating videos too, but I like to see more of people using skates in practical situations as a feasible means of transportation. I have Flaneurz and I absolutely love them for practical use

      And thank you for that useful feedback! I agree. We don’t all need to be the best dancer or street skater or park skater. Most people just want to skate in a relaxed, fun way and if we get around or get some exercises along the way, bonus! 😄

    How many mi./km did u roll?
    If my streets were flat & well-maintained, I'd love 2 commute 2 work on 🛼 (+ w/protected lanes- there r crazy drivers where I'm at).

    • @TheSkateOutdoors
      @TheSkateOutdoors  3 месяца назад

      About 3km distance one way. I agree, you need to use residential streets, sidewalks, and protected bike paths like I did. No major roads with busy traffic. That would be unsafe. Our city is improving their biking infrastructure greatly due to advocation of the cycling community.
